  • Footage from netflix series ' Barbarians' S1 Ep6 The final battle...
    The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest (Schlacht im Teutoburger Wald, Hermannsschlacht, or Varusschlacht), described as the Varian Disaster (Clades Variana) by Roman historians, took place in the Teutoburg Forest in 9 CE, when an alliance of Germanic peoples ambushed Roman legions and their auxiliaries, led by Publius Quinctilius Varus. The alliance was led by Arminius, a Germanic officer of Varus's auxilia. Arminius had acquired Roman citizenship and had received a Roman military education, which enabled him to deceive the Roman commander methodically and anticipate the Roman army's tactical responses.

    The show went to such great lengths to portay accuracy in language and military gear used by the Romans. I cannot understand how the battle scenes are the polar opposite. Loose formation units, armoured legions getting skewed by spear throwers, individuals being thrown about....etc

      That is exactly what happened back then, the germans couldn't defeat the romans in open combat due to there training and formations, so Arminus led them into the trap in the forest were they couldn't use these formations.

    The Battle of Teutoburg or the "Varus disaster" is a turning point in history, the crushing victory of the Germans over the Romans resulted in the fall of the empire four centuries later and Europe will become Germanic, there is a giant statute of the hero Arminius in the forest of the same name, according to Tacitus , Roman historian , 20,000 Roman soldiers are killed .

      @@jonoc3729 Not really. A stretch, but not dumb. The Teutoburg was the decisive moment where Roman advance into Germany stopped. Then followed centuries of back-and-forth warring, until the Germanic invasions of the 4th and 5th century collapsed Rome.

    • @jonoc3729
      @jonoc3729 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@lteagle101 The roman retreat from germania would have to come at one point or another. After teutoburg they still influenced and vassalized many tribes over the rhine. Rome got more powerful in the decades after teutoburg. And in the next centuries Rome suffered dozens of defeats far worse than teutoburg and still kept going. There are lots of factors to Romes decline and fall, saying it was a single event is nonsense.

    • @Roterschimmel
      @Roterschimmel ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry, but that is just plain wrong and not even a long stretch. The Battle of Teutoburg did not result in the fall of the empire, in fact the height of the empire in the second century under the Five Good Emperors comes long after that.
      Additionally: Lots of people tend to blend out the military campaigns of Tiberius and Germanicus (foremost 14-16 A.D.), which followed the varian disaster, and which were extremely successful against the Arminian federation, and strechted deep in germanic territory. The Romans had their vengeance for Teutoburg, retrieved 2/3 of the lost eagles and could have conquered the whole of Germania, if Tiberius hadn't miscalculated and ordered Germanicus back, who was on the path to certain victory.

    I can see how the Romans lost with a unless incompetent general like varus and the Roman Army is suppose to be one of the ancient worlds most strongest and most effective militarized faction of the ancient world but ever military and militarized faction has it's weakness including the Roman Legion and for one it can't go left or right or retreat it can only move forward that's what it's built to do and 2 is column formation and I'm sure it can hold it's own but it's strength is cut in half
    but I've read Varus also had other means of fighting but he left them all the behind his line and he only took his legions but I can see how the Legions became ineffective cause they we're moving through thicc dense forest in and I'm sure at the time you couldn't see 10 feet in front of u except the person in front of u but at the time the Legions we're in column formation and we're unaware that they we're being lead into an ambush and we're completely caught off guard before it was to late and we're completely surrounded and getting annihilated but the Romans had no choice but to kept moving forward and had no time to rest and cause of the barbarian hit and run attacks until the Romans we're completely exhausted and overrun and annihilated and they we're completely cut off from retreat.
    The Roman legion is only meant to do one thing and that's to rely on it's strength to move forward together and destroy the enemy on the open battlefield but during the battle of tuteberge that strength was used against them just like how Romans used the same tactic to destroy buddica and her enormous barbarian army in Brittania

      Where have you learnt that the roman legion couldn't go left or right? The roman army was trained and equipped at standard that had been reached in Europe in the XVIII century. Most certain the roman legion could maneuver better that all the armies in their time for the simple fact that they were professional soldiers that were spending up to 20 years doing nothing but march, manoever and building forts.

      The animal skulls aren’t quite right.
      The Wolf and bear headdresses are absolutely right. (Berserkers/Upfwereners)
      And the black body paint is a reference to the Harii, a religious warrior cult that would paint themselves completely pitch black and only attack at night using wooden and stone weapons only painted black.
      People think that the Harii were trying to be perceived as einherjar or Odins Ghost Warriors.
      The Romans were terrified of Harii because they would attack in very close ambush style out of the shadows without warning with extreme ferocity before retreating into the forest again and seemed to them like evil spirits of the forest attacking them.
