I picked up the harmonica in 2011. I was age 53. In 2012 I played my first open mic. I am still playing and still learning. I am not as good as I would like to be, but in 2016 I joined a band. I had a blast playing with the guys, but in 2019 that came to an end. At this time I am looking to put together a new band. I will always be trying to get better at playing. Thank you Liam for these tips.
You're welcome Tony, thanks for sharing your story. It's a strange time indeed for bands. I have my first duo rehearsal in AGES tonight, hoping it goes OK. Feels strange to be going out again!
It didn't take long to be able to squeeze out a recognisable tune but I'm beginning to realise that it takes time to progress. You're bang on the money Liam when you say "enjoy the journey" this is certainly more of a road trip than a race between the lights....
Hi. I picked up my 1st harmonica on Saturday! I've gone for a Hohner in C (Big River Harp). Currently practicing my single notes and my breathing but i'm still getting out of breath. Just been practicing your Hey Jude video it's great. I want to play with bluesey tunes eventually.
Im bound and determined to play and get really good at it, i practice literally every chance i get, i practice at home, at the park, i even practice in the car when stuck in traffic or at a red light, i could care less what other people think or say and it doesn't matter to me how long it takes, i just know im loving every minute of it 👍.
I bought my harmonica two days ago and I've been glued to this channel since! I've been working on my single notes but I've been having trouble with bending but I am excited for more of this journey (:
Hi Liam, thank you for the tips. As a kid I had 2 tremolo's, still have them. Now I am retired, I play about everyday one hour at least, and started 3,5 years ago, when I bought my first diatonic Harp. First I had 11 private lessons via Skype, after that I practised from TH-cam, whatever I could find, Tomlin, you, Adam Gussow,Jon Gindick, J.P.Allen. I can play clean single notes, bends and overblows (improvement required), and went on a different course: first tried to learn the blues, now I play along with popsongs, folk, country, and for example play along with Harproli and Firezapa.
Well done Truus, thanks for sharing your story. Keep up the good work! I am like you, I love to play different styles/genres - I can't help myself! Cheers. Liam
i bought a hohner bluesband in the key of C for $10 at a music shop in the spring of 2023 and over the past few months i really gotten in to learning the harp, what people dont tell you about learning the harmonica is there is not many people who know how to play and can give lessons face to face. but i keep going and someday wi will be able to really play it.
I'll have been playing for 2 years on November 8th. TH-cam has been huge in my learning. You and many other beautiful, knowledgeable musicians have taught me a lot. I'm lucky to be able to play about 2-8 hours a day. I've come along way but have along way to go. I find that memorizing is the key for me. Remember to practice practice practice. HTM. Thanks for all you share.
I bought a harmonica 3 years ago and attempted to learn once and gave up, but I found your channel and is determined this time to learn how to play my first instrument
I'm 14 and I got my harmonica 1 week ago. I can already play several songs and have gotten really good at single notes. I can't wait to keep getting better at it and learn to bend notes.
Awesome! It’s so handy. You can master any other instrument but harmonica is just a great pocket instrument for a jam, driving waiting anything. Keep it going!
I've been following your lessons and been practicing the 'C' major scale, the leapfrogging and the group of 4s for the past 1 month. Now I can play those smoothly. I am trying to play simple melodies like the Godfather theme and the last of the mohicans. It's been great and your lessons have been very helpful. Cheers!
I've been playing for four years now and between (mostly) your videos and the local harmonica club I've learned a lot. I can play the basics and straight harp pretty well. Working on my techniques like bending, warbles, comping etc is slowly taking form especially when I'm not trying too hard. I even have enough skills to teach a raw beginner a few things. My blues playing is the most raw but the 12 bar blues is helping me. Thanks for the lessons
You're welcome Steve, thanks for sharing your experience. It's a great feeling to pass on your knowledge, I'm sure you're finding that too. Cheers. Liam
I started in July this year and feel I’m spinning my wheels. I know I need to interact w other players and beginners for feedback and growth. I also intend to sign up for your online lessons for more structured learning.

Practice. Practice. Practice. I started playing guitar 4 years ago at 40 years old and almost gave up and then one day i just made like 5 steps forward in progress. Idk wtheck happened but i just got alot better overnight so stick with it my man
I am planning to buy a Honner harmonica for me to learn as I love the music that coming from it. I am not talented when it comes to any music instruments but I am eager to learn and be a talented one! I was all started with my infant when he played a harmonica and I was like,I want to learn, too!
Thanks Liam being at it for about 18 months, getting to single note fulfillment,my main focus is trying to get more of a handle on learning the blues and establish a solid base with that. Practice times usually are a good solid hour,up to 5 to 6 days a week. Always starting with the breathing drills, followed by single note scale practices for about 10 to 15minutes. Can pick a new song comfortably and have it to a reasonable level in about a week or so.
Solid tips Mr. Ward. 1 year by the way really inspired by Adam Gussows playing and many of the blues pioneers. Too many to name, and you're not bad either.
I was the kid who always got first chair playing trumpet but then I got braces and gave up. Then I learned the drums for a minute but hated lagging it around apartments so I quit. I feel like - even though harmonicas are one of the hardest to get good at - the convenience factor fora nomad will let me play it for years to come
strange as this will surely sound, my interest in blues harp began when I was 19 yrs old and practicing beginner's banjo on my back porch. I surprisingly discovered that playing my 'g' pitch pipe with the recordings was just as fun as trying to copy Earl Scruggs on the banjo. as I was young, I learned the harp fast. wish I could remember the author and title of the thin paperback that taught me the basics to this amazing instrument. imo, lee oskar key of a is the best harp of all to get started on. golden melody 'a' is a close second. I always recommend key of a because that's the favorite of sonny boy Williamson 2. best harp player that ever lived.
Thank you for the wise words Liam, I’ve been studying chromatic harmonica for over 20 years, the diatonic for about 5 and you hit the nail on the head imo it’s about the journey definitely! You have to enjoy it, mine has been full of ups and downs but more ups tho given the technology we have today with lots more resources and great teaching from people like yourself, I have been fortunate enough to stick with it and surround myself with other musicians, NGU( never give up )Cherio
I love playing a harmonica ,,but i want to learn more about the secret how to play harmonica..i dont have the idea what is the best harmonica to play..your video it can help help to emprove..thank you for sharing.
The first harmonica i „played“ was a toy of bontempi. My father in law always played and joked with my little son. The little son is now a „wonderfull“ teenager and my father in law died in 2018 - that‘s when i decided to try it out to play something „real“, what is infact not possible with aa bontempi toy. After buying a hohner „bluesharp“ I realized, that is hard to learn, that is difficult.. So i took the challenge, somehow i did this for Rudi, the grandfather of my son. Today i am not very good, i think. But i could not imagine to live without my music, without my harmonicas. I won more than just the ability to play songs and some easy blues „things“, i am a stronger person than before, i won self respect and confidence. I‘m still playing the „bluesharp“, but i love my marineband crossover. Thanks for the video with good tips for beginners. 👍🏻
Thanks for sharing your experience, Thomas. I'm sure your father-in-law would be proud of you playing the harmonica. Keep up the good work! Cheers. Liam
I am 57 years, I began to learn the harmonica by myself from the 20th May 2020, I have got the scales (12 positiones in mayor) , 7 blues scales in minor, all overblow in 1 - 6 hole, overdraw in 7 hole, I'am going to learm tongue blocking from now.
Great tips for beginners I've been learning the blues harp for more than a month now Just wanted to know, is bending also one of the foundations? I can play single notes with a decent tone, but I do get tensed while bending notes, though they're almost in tune now.

I feel your pain, there are so many instruments out there, but so expensive and you don't know with which one you will bond. I tried guitar, ukulele and realised I am not a string person, so to go out and choose a instrument and it cost you a lot of money just to find out at the end it doesn't work for you is a lot of money wasted. One thing you must remember, no thing is fun when you can't do it well, but you only will get better if you put in the practice. Try to stick to the harmonica that you've got, but put in an hour practice every day and you will get there in the end. Practice practice practice is the only thing that will help you jump over the hurdles and get better day by day. If I had put in more time with the guitar and ukulele I would have got there, just thinking of it, but I don't like the strings. Kalimba is also not a very expensive instrument and has a beautiful sound if you want another instrument, you can learn both. Just enjoy, we are not going to play with the philharmonic orchestra, so go grap your instrument and practice while enjoying and having fun.
@@Learntheharmonica well, I guess I'm going to try it since it's better to learn some music on any instrument than not at all. Maybe one day when I can afford an instrument I truly love learning it will be much easier.

Winner of a video, I been tryin to find out about "is learning keyboard the same as piano?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Penaycer Rudimentary Preponderance - (search on google ) ? It is a good one off guide for discovering how to play the piano easily without the normal expense. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my buddy got great results with it.

Ever heard of - Penaycer Rudimentary Preponderance - (search on google ) ? It is a good one off guide for discovering how to play the piano easily without the normal expense. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my buddy got great results with it.
