Every state in the United States has an official bird. Some were chosen by legislatures, some were chosen by contests of schoolchildren. But all of them were chosen between the 1920's and 1960's. Let's see which birds were chosen!

You breezed over Oklahoma, but the scissor-tailed flycatcher is an S tier bird. When in flight they have the beautiful feathers that trail behind them that do look like scissors. Also, the bird is on our official state license plate.
I just got the Wingspan board game, so now I see a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher much more often. It is a very nice bird. I like the way they did it on the license plate too. Good job Oklahoma! Also good that they chose a unique bird. Thanks for watching, Jawn!
This was really interesting Steve, I had no idea there was quite so much overlap between the state birds of many states! I think we should mandate states to each choose a unique species, but somehow I don’t think that will happen!

Hi Harrison and Evan! I agree that it should be mutually exclusive. There are SO many good birds to choose from, even from popular, colorful, culturally symbolic birds. There are a lot of birds out there. Making that rule now would reignite many state rivalries. In that band of cardinals there is already a debate about which one was first, because it was unofficial in some states while other states. We would have to create a new category of "State Birds for the 21st Century" and make it mutually exclusive to have any chance at a peaceful bird selection. Might be fun! As a native of South Dakota, I heard stories about the red-neck pheasant being chosen to attract hunters to the state as part of the tourism industry.

We still have a lot of gulls in Utah, I think the great salt lake has one of the larger populations of the california gull, though we also get a lot of ring-bills, which I was trying to figure out if the picture was truly the california gull because they are basically identical except in what shade of grey the wings are and a red bit on the California's beak
Happy New Year to you as well. That gull story was pretty interesting to read about, especially the monument of gulls eating crickets.
I should have commented on the distribution of bird orders, because basically everything is Passeriformes, with a smattering of other orders: Galliformes, a Piciformes, a Cuculiformes, and a couple others. We have upgraded our brains to do this.

Yes, it seems like Northern Cardinal, Northern Mockingbird, and Western Meadowlark are the three favorite birds in the country based on state birds. Every bird is remarkable in its own way. Thanks for watching!
I have a really nice story about the scissor tailed flycatcher. My family is moving to Oklahoma soon and yesterday I discovered a quarter with Oklahoma's scissor tail on it. That day we finally bought a house there in Norman. I just looked it up and this bird is a symbol of good luck and fortune. Sidenote: Y'know for a state that has an entire fucking baseball team devoted to it Missouri sure picked an odd choice of bird

My 5 y.o. decided (unprompted) that he wanted to learn the state birds. He already knows pretty much all the states with duplicates and several with unique birds.
We've already watched twice through but I feel we will watch many more.

My grandson, Oliver , saw a red Cardinal, which led to a discussion of the States birds. We live in Miami and I recently hear a Public Radio report that Florida is considering changing it’s state bird from the Mockingbird.
Have any states changed its state bird?

Hi Alan and Oliver! No state has ever changed its state bird. Florida would be the first. I like the idea of each state having a unique bird that represents their values and the species native to their range. Birds are such excellent symbols, and there are plenty to choose from. At My village some (very few)blue throat barbet bird has five toes and long chameleon like tail(but not green in color) near the tail of this bird.And others parts of the body are similar to barbet bird.Why this bird has strange features sir?
I studied Marine Biology at the university level and work with animals professionally as a zookeeper.
I have never heard of a bird with five toes or a chameleon-like tail. I don't doubt what you saw, but I have no insight into what it might be. Is there a chance you could get a picture? WHY ARE THERE SO MANY OF THE SAME BIRDS FOR SO MANY STATES?
Hi Rav! That's a good question. There are 18 states that chose the same three birds, and there are lots of other duplicates as well. I think it would be nice for each state to choose a state bird which is unique to their culture. Florida is working on that - considering the Scrub Jay instead of being on Team Mockingbird. In my opinion Florida's state bird should be the Floridian Scrub Jay :)

Red robins are in Virginia not Cardinals
Hi Marcus! I double-checked just to be sure, and on January 25, 1950 the Virginia state assembly voted for the Northern Cardinal as the official state bird. I couldn't dig up the primary records, but they're almost certainly out there. Robins are awesome though, and I wish Virginia did have a unique bird (American Robins are already the state bird of three other states). Thanks for watching!

Hi! But that makes you part of something larger. It's not just your state bird, it's also the most popular bird in your whole part of the country! That means your state chose well. Plus, wouldn't you rather have the Cardinal be the most common state bird, instead of the the Mockingbird? Anyway, I appreciate you taking the time to learn!

As a kid, it bothered me that our state bird was the CALIFORNIA gull

It is the only state bird with another state name in it. Maybe someone will discover a subspecies that only lives in Utah and get the subspecies name utahii added on the end. (Note: I just looked up the species and it looks like someone already did that for Alberta: Larus californicus albertaensis)
