History is complicated. Johnson wasn't exactly a hero, but he wasn't an out-and-out villain either. He's a fascinating, paradoxical figure. He was the greatest progressive president of the twentieth century, whose administration was tarnished by the century's greatest foreign policy debacle. But he was also the last US president to rise from very poor origins. Those origins shaped the ideals that dominated his presidency - and that were ultimately undermined by his own weaknesses and failings.
