messing around with my beloved analog synth. no talk no 'real thing' vs Virtual - just playing and enjoying my time but real affection for this old machine.
Those Oberheim synths were so iconic! I still have my OB8 (non midi) synth. The sound? Can’t put a price on it! Larry Dunn from Earth, Wind, and Fire, and Prince got me hook on the OBX. Then Jeff Lorber came with the OBXa! Great synths.😌👍🏾
this video is fantastic. Some of the pad sounds remind me of the sound of Lyle Mays. Probably the best demo I have found of what the synth sounds like, for the kind of patches I like
I've been fortunate enough to play many bigger, more rare, or more elaborate synths, but the OBXa/OB8's are my favorite synths hands down. There's truly something magical to the sound that something like a Prophet 5 or Jupiter can't quite achieve.
James Reeno you don’t have to compare the two but rather recognize them as two different beasts, just like master Dave Smith did recently by releasing both Prophet 6 and OB6. Best to you
@@SPAZZOID100 Well imo you cant judge a synth on faster envelopes in this instance and envelope race doesn't make or break the sound. As much as i admire the p5 and jp 8 there is something magical about the vintage OBs i cant get my head around.
Such awesome Police-Prince-Styx sound during the first 3 minutes, then a burst of Jan Hammer-Chick Corea. I can’t believe this synthesizer fell out of fashion, just because it wasn’t digital.
I just bought one from GC. It’s in horrible condition. All these notes constantly fall out of tune, the pitch wheel is broken, there’s a weird hum in the outputs and the right output has a hiss yet ive made the best loops I’ve ever made on it. Since it’s 6k I will be returning it but I think I’m going to save my money until I find a working one.
Excellent playing, really enjoyed your chord voicings. Care to share the chords? Also that polyphonic glissando sounds incredible. I have a p5, same oscillators, envelopes, and filters in both, they sound very similar, but I definitely hear a difference in the filter section.
@@estudiomonteverdi great man! I'll be getting mine Next week. Would you mind sharing your presets (wav cassette dump) i Will give you recognition when using them :-) thanks
André Mehmari But isn’t improvisation based on musical experiences? Maybe you subconsciously remembered this tune when making/playing the patch: th-cam.com/video/lSUk8bSVHYc/w-d-xo.html ? Your patch in turn inspired me to make a similar one on my Prophet Rev2. Welcome to the wonderful world of music! :)
octopus34 sure! If you check my other piano solo videos (synths are an old passion but not my focus) you are going to see a lot of reference to the great masters that have influenced my work during my 30 year old career! Thanks for stopping by! I welcome to my channel! All the best
To me, this is the iconic sound of Oberheim !! It sounds so much like the pads that Lyle Mays used with Pat Methany. Excellant !!
there are lots of OBX-a videos on youtube, but the synth sounds so much better when a real musician is playing :) Nice one X
Ian o'Brien Many thanks !
Absolutely. Most synth videos are people who practically don't know what middle c is.
There is something very special and connected between you too--- that Xa loves you.... chemistry!
It was once called the Steinway of synths.
And in your good hands is just magic.
It's so great to hear demos of classic instruments from people who can really play - just gorgeous.
Right? Finally.
Warm, warm, warmer, warmer , warmer..gotcha!
Rush used this to astounding effect.
they used an ob-x
but close enough for government work imo
I too love YOUR old Oberheim OBXa
Excellent playing and knowledge of jazz harmony. Echoes of Joe Zawinul. Thanks.
thanks! welcome to my channel

Nicely done!
I think this ob-xa would also sound good in your hands, Matt.
Wow! Sounds fantastic. Finally a demo showing off what this thing can do.
I see why Prince played Oberheims.
And dennis de young when he was in styx. Pity he later no offense, turned into a roger waters
One of the many holy grails if not the many icons of synths
Just a beautiful beautiful sound

A good demo of this synth with a real keyboard player. The best demo of this Oberheim in youtube. Thanks for share :)
thanks!
Fantastic sounds -- so lush, dreamy and warm. Your OB-Xa sounds amazing.
synth4ever thanks !
Gorgeous patches and voicings. So good. That poly-portamento...
(Perhaps Allan Holdsworth is smiling somewhere.)
Nothing quite like Tom O's synths!
Rip allan
Much as I love my Matrix 1000, I know it can’t equal one of these.
What does poly portamento mean? Is it unique to this synth?
Hi, I knew Allan was driving an Oberheim with his SynthAxe but didnt know it was a Xa (was it, btw?). He was and still is my Number 1! RIP, AH.
@@youngchool Allan used the Oberheim Matrix 12 and the Oberheim Xpander. Doubtful it was an Xa.
I was wondering what all the fuss was about till I heard this demo your chords are fantastic and show off the potential of this synth
Adam Mann thanks a million
You are welcome!
This might be the best thing i've seen in ages! I could litteraly listen to this every day.
Sweet!!!!!!

tritonrecordings Prophet-5 surpasses the OB’s in sharpness. Also, much faster envelopes.
@@SPAZZOID100 You can't just let someone else have an opinion, can you?

Best OB-Xa demo because of your patches; they reveal the real soul of the synth: smooth, creamy and yet enormously powerful. No bell sounds required.
thank you! you made my day!
One of the greatest synths ever made. This is why all of the 80's Bands loved it too. Journey, Rush, Van Halen.
Not sure if Jonathan Cain owned any Oberheim's. I know he had a Roland Jupiter 8 which was seen on Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) video.
It would’ve been fitting if he had.
@@einezcrespo2107 He had one at home just so he could play Jump in private.
It will never get any better! Thank you.🎧💭👍🎼

YEAH,GREAT PLAYING!
MANY TIMES WE FIND DEMOS AND WE REALLY DON'T HEAR THE SCOPE OF THE INSTRUMENT.
TAKES A REAL PLAYER!
this is a great video. thank you.
sounds classic!- All you need now is Prince singing over the top of those chords...:(
lovely. you have an amazing expression that performs nicely with (in my humble opinion) the best synth ever. thank you for this!!!
What a timeless sound palette! Should off never sold mine!! Great video
This synth is timeless
I've owned almost every poly analog ever made, and I still have my OBXa for a reason.
I wish modern synths could sound this way. But they don't. They sound too cold and perfect.
Love that warm blanket
beautiful
Sounds wonderful
The is no analog synth to compete with the OBX-a,Priod!! i Own one and many other analog synths, but nothing beats the Beast!!
the sound #PAD.
Can't wait for the Behringer version. Go ahead and hate me.
I'm so jealous! Very nice insight into the fantastic sound of the OB-Xa. Well done!
Just Love The Sound's Out Of this Well Done Mate
Gracias 🙏
Dank playing! Subdued patches are creamy.
You deserve it man
Good job demonstrating it. I have an Egberto Gismonti album where he used the OBXa extensively.
jorgemei in fact this very synth was previously owned by Egberto’s assistant
Wonderful Synth!
Aliás, o vinil Rei Arthur do Rick é sensacional. Tenho o LP desde meus 14 anos.
i love it too!
Nice voicings and patches!

Mad 💕🔥💕🔥💕 from #Pakistan props 🙌👊
Excellent playing, really enjoyed your chord voicings. Care to share the chords? Also that polyphonic glissando sounds incredible. I have a p5, same oscillators, envelopes, and filters in both, they sound very similar, but I definitely hear a difference in the filter section.
Please play more on this beauty
Ah man amazing stuff! That first patch is blowing my mind, briefly how would you start programming this because I need it in my life haha
Muito legal!
Very skilful playing 👌

Are these all stock patches that you’re using ? Your playing brings out the beauty of this magnificent machine !!
thanks! they are my own. glad you liked
Me lembrou outro grande usuário de Oberheim: Lyle Mays.
It has a nice raw tone. I always pass mine through a reverb or delay to give it that extra bit of magic
If I had to decide today between JP8 and Ob-Xa it’ll always be Oberheim
If you ever decide to sell your JP8, let me know! :)
synth4ever I’ll keep it in mind, especially if Roland wise up and decide to make an analog JP12 😏
Great sounds? Factory patches or programmed by yourself? Btw great voicings! 👍💯
Roger Gentile all programmed by me! Thanks a lot and please come back soon for more.
@@estudiomonteverdi great man! I'll be getting mine Next week. Would you mind sharing your presets (wav cassette dump) i Will give you recognition when using them :-) thanks
my OBXa sounds slightly different I remark
I find it _very_ difficult to get through the whole thing at once, it is quite overwhelming..
Ohhhhh whyyyyy
What kinda chords are you playing??
They have a very jazz/neo soul kinda quality
5:11 - where do I know this from? Weather Report?
Hi, I’m a huge Zawinul fan but this is a fully improvised video. Thanks

Most synth videos are absolute garbage (people who never took the time to learn how to play). This is better
