First of all, great to have you back Mike!!! I love what you do in that you showcase world-class fisheries in a part of the country I grew up in, which makes this very personal. I used to fish native brookies in Wyoming county specifically. You are an active participant in brook trout conservation as you buy a fishing license, and a ton of fishing gear, and go fishing. Our license dollars together with Dingell-Johnson federal excise taxes on fishing gear, often pay for research such as this. My only hope is that this research has angler's best interests and angling's future as top priorities.
You're welcome Mike. I've been in wild places all over this country and the most beautiful places I've been have been way up those native brook trout drainages in NE PA.
First off, glad to see you back Mike. Was concerned that you weren't well or something happened to you. Way too kick off the first video for a long time. Good luck to the PSU research team. I'm sure once word gets out to the fishing community, they will get more feedback than they can handle. Will sign up asap as well. Thanks again, take care, and don't be a stranger. God bless! 👍👊🏼🇺🇸
I couldn't believe it when I saw this video. Thanks so much for uploading again. I missed all of ur great content. I cant wait to get back out to the creeks.
Where I fish in the Smokies, I see a great variation in color, shape, etc from stream to stream, and sometimes in different sections of the same stream. These brook trout are in the range of the Southern Appalachian Brook Trout - anything south and west of the New River drainage; however, due to stockings from hatcheries, etc, it can be hard to determine just how "pure" these trout are - most are probably some combination of "Northern" strain from the hatcheries and native "Southern". The general difference is, the Southern strain tends to be smaller and more colorful, and especially adapted to the flood/drought cycles.
Fantastic initiative to support. Well done, Mike. I just ordered my cards and am really looking forward to participating in data collection this year. Here's hoping the precipitation continues and the small streams see much better flows this spring/summer.
Nice work Mike! Nice to see you supporting the work of our fellow Penn State alumni! Such a worthwhile project. Curious to hear the findings of the study
Really enjoyed the knowledge piece of this. I need to fish for brookies more often. Going to allocate a whole month to it this year. But this is very inspiring to see how people are looking to research, gather info, and act. Love to see this. Thanks for sharing Mike!
Brookies are my favorite to fish for! I’ll be sure to get on this. Nothing better then a brookie smacking a dry fly. What an awesome thing they’re doing !
Great video.... filled out the form to get a card. The feeding tendency hypothesis actually has application for the angler. Side note....I work in the Business Building next to the building you visited.
This is awesome Mike! First of all, good to see a video of yours.. Second, Thank you for helping with a project like this. I fish in NY and VT... would be cool if we had something like this here as well! Tight lines man!
Hey buddy, what's up, just catching up on comments here. Thank you, how are you doing. I watched a video of yours a couple weeks back. You are doing some cool stuff man! Maybe I'll see you in NY this year! Take care, hope you're well.
@@WoolyBugged Hey Mike... things are definitely good.. everything up this way is frozen so I pretty much ice fish this time of year. But I'm itching for some stream action! If you come up this way definitely let me know! I've got lots of great small streams!
I got one from the southern tier in New York State you need to see...polkadot madness. I will send a pic along with a description of the conditions and the exact creek location. I swear trout are chameleons...
Hey, I’m wondering what your preferred rod for the little creeks, I notice you tend to use the heavier line weights. What’s your reasoning for it? I fish the feeder creeks for little brookies also and I use 1-3 wt 2 being my preferred.
For me, it depends on the size of the stream. For very small wild brook trout streams, I'll go with a 6'-7' in the 2/3wt range. However, I've found for a majority of the wild brook trout streams here in a Pennsylvania, I've found a 8' rod in the 3/4wt range to be the most effective. This length gives me more reach for nymphing and for throwing longer casts. Most folks are surprised how far you can cast on smaller mountain streams.
Mike, a couple things regarding this study. How long are they accepting photos for the project? Also you may want to reach out to these guys, Allegheny Native they have a TH-cam account and they fish all around PA, like you do. I would help, but I live in VA. Cheers, Mike
Gordon, if you visit the PA Fish & Boat Commission's website, they offer a map of all the streams in PA that hold reproductive populations of wild trout. The map gives you no guarantees of great fishing, but is a place to start. Some streams turn over populations depending on annual conditions, some consistently fish well, but the only way you can find out is by getting out and exploring. There are a variety of factors that an increase your chances, for example focusing on parts of the state where water quality is generally much higher, like areas in the northern tier. Here is a link to the map: pfbc.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=65a89f6592234019bdc5f095eaf5c6ac
Dr. Sin, this is called following policy. If they didn't wear the mask, we may not have been able to bring this video to the fishing community. At the end of the day, not that big of deal.
Glad you’re back with a video such as this! Been wishing for your return!
I’m back!
Great video Mike! Always happy to see conservation of such a beautiful fish being promoted. Glad to see my favorite TH-cam channel back.

What's with the mask out in the woods
University requirement.
