What a disgusting mess the streets are around here,, The residents should be ashamed of them selves, but thank you for the video of what was once a lovely area where proud home owners once lived.

I normally enjoy U-Tube for watching anything history, but this is such a sad watch. Every headstone and/or plot location is where someone was buried, each location has a story of a life with a start, middle and a end. Cemeteries no matter how old deserve more than what Leeds Road Cemetery is getting.

    This is disgraceful.
Do you know when the cemetery was closed and why isn't the Council maintaining this??
I looked this up online and part of the graveyard was incorporated into St Peter's school and only a few gravestones have survived.
It's appalling when a burial ground is built over like this.
It almost makes me wish some kind of horror story takes places where the ghosts of those buried wreak havoc on the people who disregarded their final resting place.

This was not overgrown at all in the mid 90's. All the remaining stones by the wall were visible from the school play ground. One or two kids would stand out in the grass to retrieve the ball when we played rounders in PE. The school looks more like a prison now.
I also find it sad that the cemetery was never mentioned in the school itself, especially if you're telling me there's a former teacher and others connected to the school buried there. You would think they would tell the kids something of the history that is right outside of the window!

At Peters school actually integrated and closed access to the grave yard after 1995 from Leeds Road. Before this the council maintained the field and the grave yard.
Once the access from the main road was closed it’s been abandoned. 😢very sad for the families whose ancestor are buried.
I am surprised the men didn’t mention St Peters Primary School.

Oakworth had an overgrown cemetery. A local group was put together in an effort to tidy and restore it. Looks fantastic now. They did an adopt a grave campaign and people have taken on the cleaning and maintaining of there adopted plot. It really is lovley to walk through now.

I grew up on Gladstone Street. In the 60s this was our playground. I remember a number of the graves had openings where the ground had sunk. It's sad to see it in such a state.

I attended St Peter's in the late 70s/early 80s and remember the large headstones. We used to have our sports days where the Mosque now is 😂 I think the land was sold for it a couple of years before I left the school, and we had to walk down Leeds Road to a field to do it!

Thanks for the historically interesting video as per the norm! Excellent and insightful! Respect to yourself and Andy, hopefully those who have shown an interest to put themselves forward will do just that! I lived in Bradford for 4 years and it needs no comment from myself on why it has become the way it has! I have travelled all over the UK and I have never come across such neglect of the departed in this way.My home city of Portsmouth have very well kept and in fact beautiful cemeteries so that relatives of the departed can mourn in tranquil surroundings! Thanks again and regards.

I was a 90s child I used to play there my grandmother house was over looking it. It’s weird toknow that this was a Irish graveyard having family over in Ireland myself I remember when there was Irish travellers living on this site with there caravans it never used to be so overgrown as it is today Andy if you could please arrange something over the spring period I’m more than happy to travel back to my home town and help clean up the place I’m sure if we have a date in place we will get plenty of volunteers sad to see this in such a state 😢

Mark .. add my name to that list .. as a child in the early 70s .. i was a resident of Hazelhurst Kids home on Leeds rd .. and thought i'd explored every inch of leeds rd and surrounding areas .. Those headstones should be moved to another graveyard in Bradford .. it doesn't really matter which one so long as everything is documented .. so people of the future can look upon these headstones and read about people of Bradfords past .. and the ground most certainly could be put to good use ..

My father grew upon Thursby Street nearby and my parents first house after the 2nd World War was in Gladstone Street. It is such a shame to see a cemetery in such a state. The worst is people dumping things in the cemetery. It would be a shame to cut down the trees. It could a lovely area in what is a fairly built up part of Bradford. Some rewilding with wild flowers and a simple management of the cemetery.

Wow I remember playing there as a child in the late 60s and early 70s. Then the land was sold and the mosque was built. I remember the council people coming and taking away some remains from the graves as quite a few had collapsed and children were using them as dens. I really thought they had removed all the headstones. Didn't realise there was all this left.
Such a shame its been left to this state.
I hope it will get a make over and hopefully as you suggested turned into a family park or even a memorial park.

The Mosque was built during the 90s. The graveyard was near St Peter’s RC primary school. It wasn’t affected by the mosque as Muslims are not allowed to build on a graveyard. A religious building could not be built on a graveyard. There was another field next to the graveyard and then the field on which the mosque was built. The mosque wanted the field for car park but St Peter’s school objected saying that it was part of the graveyard therefore it shouldn’t be used as a car park. I know this as I was community governor on St Peter’s governing body and it was discussed during a meeting.

The council maintained the field above the grave yard and the grave yard up until 1995 plus accessing from Leeds Road in front of St Peters Primary School RC.
During this period St Peters Primary School extended their play ground and closed the road coming up to the graveyard. This stopped public access and council machinery to the graveyard and the field above the graveyard both of these have become hidden or secret garden.
St Peters church and school governors should have kept an eye on the Grave yard at its their parishioners who are buried there .😢
As a local I would be more than happy to join in any effort to clean up.
