This is monumentally sad. Why is that? Other recordings emanate some kind of deeper hope in human virtue. This seems imbued with a sadness that is compelling. This rarely played beautiful work deserves much more recognition. And here it is , in its full glory and what a wonderfully warm and controlled performance this is. I spent many hours of study to get the right moods of the progressing and highly inventive variations, not to mention some difficult technical issues this work poses. A superb work.
Exquisite composition by the maestro. It was the last piece I worked on, many years ago, so has a special place in my memory. Wonder why it is not more often performed? Simply beautiful piece, thanks for posting this beautiful interpretaion by the great Richter.
Fantastic, Where did You found this ? In Monsaingeon's book about Richter, I saw that thsi piece was included in his huge repertoire but no commercial release of it available. I was waiting for years to hope One day someone would have a live document of Richter playing this. Thank You so much. XX Regards

I started learning these variations many, many years ago, but my work prevented me from finishing it. The very last variations become too beautiful to bear ... Brahms is utterly heavy... l get depressed when I listen to his beautiful, extremely lonely, dreamy music . Very very very hard to find these variations for buying; l found them in I Berkeley in a most UNLIKELY store...

Viele Fehler, teilweise ganz falsche Harmonien und der Rhythmus wackelt hier und da. Diese Variationen Op.21 sind zwar nicht virtuos wie etwa die Paganini-Variationen, aber sie haben ihre bösen Tücken hier und da, die zu bewältigen sind, sowohl geistig als auch sprungtechnisch. Trotz aller Mängel gefällt mir diese Aufnahme ganz besonders wegen der Poesie,dem edlen Klang,, der plastischen Polyphonie, dem großen Bogen aus einer inneren Ruhe heraus. Richter habe ich 1988 live gehört mit diesem Werk und er hat mich dazu inspiriert, die Variationen selber einzustudieren und im Konzert zu spielen. Sie kamen immer sehr gut an beim Publikum.
He may not have the finesse of Volodos, but that does not make him a potato. Richter never was a Sovjet puppet. I think this is truly one of his remarkable recordings.

I have never thought of this piece as sad, filled with overflowing joy, rather, but of course Richter gives it his personal tinge.

I am not sure this work is intended to be so uniformly melancholic but needless to say a very virtuosic performance from Richter.
Richter is a potato. So many people accept USSR critics' propaganda that he was great. But
they are all wrong!
