    Prinz Eugen really deserves a video of her own. Not only did she get through the Battle of the Denmark Strait unharmed, she survived the entire ww ii and two direct hits by nuclear bombs. She capsized when they towed her away for decontamination but even today a small part of her remains above water.

    Just imagine if the sortie was at full strength. Bismarck, Tirpitz, Gneisenau, Scharnhorst, and Prinz Eugene you can come too. That would have led to an absolutely epic confrontation with the Royal Navy. Especially considering the US Navy was still on the sidelines pre-Pearl Harbor. All of those capital ships vs Rodney , KGV, Hood, and others.aybe would have even had an old line of battle.

      @@weareworkingonit The full force of the Royal Navy would have had very little trouble with such a force actually. The problem for the RN was always that it had to spread itself so thinly. Especially when hunting for ships that had broken out into the Atlantic. but in an "all of us vs all of them scenario the RN always had a fairly large numerical advantage over the Kriegsmarine. And as the battle of Taranto and the surface war in Pacific theatre would later show, the RN aircraft carriers would likely have been devastating in a heavy hitters fight.

    • @techpriest8965
      @techpriest8965 6 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Wanderer628 1. They had very few U-boats to conduct major operations. Wolf packs were few and far between to be effective. Admiral Doenitz said that.
      2. U-boats are very much detectable. And if spotted from the air...good luck. U-boat captains could not fart without being detected by sonars and other equipment.
      3. Trying to squeeze raiding sortie trough British land, sea and air defences (and their allies) is like threading the needle with a 5cm thick rope.
      4. Avoiding engagement was order of the day. Unless you like 5 on 1 odds. When cornered to a fight they were able to put up a serious fight (sinking the Hood, Barham, Ark Royal, Audacity, Avenger, Courageous, Glorious, numerous destroyers...)
      That is my point. Fight against odds.

      Navy war in WW2 took a lot of twists, U-boats start sinking ships, Royal Navy finds a way to detect them, U-boats builds a wolf pack, Royal Navy sends large fleets of destroyers with upgraded sensors, and Nazi build more U-boats..
      Nazies really had a good advantage on the Atlantic but Hitler was never interested in sea warfare and he took minimum care of what was going on there.
      If they built more submarines and Brits didn't break the enigma then this war would have taken a different turn where Britain would surrender due to starvation.

    I really enjoyed this episode!
    Here some (hopefully) constructive criticism though:
    While your maps are designed very well and full of detail, it is noticeable that they are getting increasingly dark.
    By that I mean the colors that used to really "pop out" in earlier videos, but are getting more and more muddy. It fits this video about WW2, but others?
    Compare the siege of Antiochia and the battle of Askalon, the latter ones colors are getting muddled together and it feels kind of bland.
    I don't know if anyone shares my criticism and it is absolutely your choice to make, but I at least wanted to throw this out there! =)

      Research on the wreck of the Bismarck proved it was probably sunk by scuttling charges. Plus I doubt a single torpedo (especially a british one, they aren't as strong as say a Type 93) could cause enough damage
      The Bismarck was a big BB (though rather small compared to the Yamato-class cuties), but wasn't that good. The turtleback armour had it's flaw and the rudder design with two panels is rather fragile. Coupled with poor AA and gun aiming systems, the best part of the ship are the speed and the secondary batteries

      Let me see... Questions like these often depends on the enviroments, or the effects of each side. But i'm gonna do it like this: Considering there are numerous ways to stop flooding on mordern day warships, I would say the Battleship. If the torpedo hit a boiler room ,and it was flooding, it would probably be sealed off from the rest of the ship. and therefor no chances of continuous flooding throughout the ship, causing it to float, hence survive.

    • @ptonpc
      @ptonpc 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Most battleships of WW1 and WW2 era had some form of armour designed to protect against torpedo attacks. It was always a compromise between protection versus weight and bulk but it could usually mitigate if not completely protect against torpedoes. (It didn't normally extend to cover the bow or stern)

      @kieranwilliams5148 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      JordZz Gaming Different navy, as far as I'm aware, only the German navy referred to their ships as he with everyone else referring to their ships as she. Something to do with masculinity was the reason that Germany called their ships he, possibly because Germany is called Deutschland which translates to fatherland in English so they referred to their ships as he as a result. The Royal Navy and US navy refer to their ships as she and the Japanese navy was actually based on the Royal Navy pre WW1 as they bought the Kongo from Britain and built her sister ships under license in Japan. Most navies are based on the Royal Navy as the Royal Navy is the most successful navy in the world and ruled the waves for over 200 years until 1943-1944 when America took over. Therefore most navies including America probably copied Britains navy style just as South American navies copied the Royal Navy, the south American armies copied Prussia/Germany in organisation and dress style. Chile and Peru are a good example of this. This can be seen at commisioning ceremonies where people say things like ' god bless those who sail in her'.

    • @frostyharlequin3472
      @frostyharlequin3472 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      le Beast yes. She was meant to have a much larger overhaul at the beginning of WW2, bearing in mind she was showing off British naval dominance for 20 years before the war and was horrendously outdated by the outbreak of war. Then need for new and improved King George V class ships outstripped the desire to take a functioning and prestigious ship out of the British Navy for expensive and time consuming refits.
      Interesting point is that due to her size many British people believed that Hood was invincible and it caused huge fear in the country when news of her sinking was announced.

    Two small mistakes I found in this excellent video
    1. Hood was the biggest Battlecruiser of her era, the Yamato-class BB's were slightly longer and had a bigger displacement
    2. In German a military operation is translated as 'Unternehmen'. An 'Operation' is a chirurgical one

    • @ignacejespers8201
      @ignacejespers8201 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      But Yamato had been commissioned into the IJN when Hood was still around. Before that she would have been. The devil lies in the details

    • @1993Crag

      Yamato was launched at this time. So it was technically larger; it was just dockside been fitted out at the time.

    • @tafnac75
      @tafnac75 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      just to point out the the difference between the big 4 Battleships/Battlecruisers of the different Navies in terms of date of Launch and there displacement.
      HMS Hood, Launched 1918 and commissioned 1920 with a displacement of 46,680 long tons (47,430 t),
      ISN Yamato Launched 1940 and commissioned 1941 with a displacement of 65,027 t (64,000 long tons),
      Bismarck Launched 1939 and commissioned 1940 with a displacement of 41,700 t (41,000 long tons),
      USS Iowa Launched around 1943 and commissioned 1943 with a displacement of 45,000 long tons (46,000 t)
      so from taking those dates you can see that HMS Hood was sailing around as the biggest of the 4 for about 20 years before the other 3 came onto the scene. In fact you could go one step further and conclude that without HMS Hood the other 3 probably wouldn't have been built in the way they were.

    • @xarglethegreat
      @xarglethegreat 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      the larger one was calling Hood the pride of the RN, at this point in time she was acknowledged to be borderline obsolescent and in desperate need of major refit, she was sent because she was one of the few units in the RN fast enough
