Go back to the early 2000's so you'll know how the A350 came to be a competitor to the then brand new B787 on the scene at the time. "Cody" doesn't seem to mention that detail in his presentation. The A350 grew in size in time to drift into 777 territory to what people think about competing types from Boeing and AIRBUS. ORIGINALLY: 787 vs A350-800. Then the scene changed with the A350-900 and the A350-1000 even though the A350-900 was going against the B787-9 for a time until "XWB" titles started appearing with stretches of the A350 series. This column is meant for "Warp's" statement above. I meant to add: the A330 series started competing with B777s when Boeing got cleared to operate under ETOPS and in turn AIRBUS's A340s went bye and better versions of the A330 came into play against the 777 series of aircraft. A330s vs B777s. A350s vs B787s.
When the 787 was first announced there was no model number. It was written up as a B330 by many due to the obvious size similarities. This video is trying to make people realise that the upgraded A330 and the B787 are aimed at the same market.
what I will say seeing as I've flown on both - Eitihad 787, Finnair and Qatar A350 is that the A350 is more comfortable because XTRA WIDE BODY. 787's were designed as a 2-3-2 but nearly every airline fits them out as a 3-3-3 thus meaning a 17 inch seat width as opposed to the 3-3-3 on the A350 XTRA WIDE BODY which has 18 to 18.5 inch seat width in economy. Thats how I know when people saying they prefer the 787 are probably Americans who have never flown on either and just lying and just making stuff up to defend Boeing
No, the 787's were not designed as 2-3-2. That was the 767 a much narrower airplane. 787 is same width as the a330, good for 8 wide. 2-4-2 seating. A350 is wider good for 3-3-3 seating, but not quite as wide as 777.
Actually, Coby that was very informative. And yes, I was one of those who assumed the A350 and 787 we're direct competitors. I have now changed that view. On looks alone the A350 get my vote but to be fair, I've not flown either, so I'm not exactly in a position to judge. Thanks for the video.
@ do you know that different airlines have different comfort, some airlines just slap highly uncomfortable seats on their plane and call it business class while others focus in the comfort of their passengers. Tbh i prefer the 787
Ant the First guy said “the seats are better in the a350” so I was simply just letting him now that it’s not boeing that controls the comfort but the airline, so you cant base your review on the plane of off comfort cause the comfort is dependable on the type of airline not the plane, so now you look stupid
@@chounphounsanoy291 The 777-X would pretty much slide the 777 series out of the A350s target market though. It's designed to accommodate 426 in a 2-class configuration, those are pretty much 747 numbers, the largest A350, by comparison, the A350-1000, is only optimized for 369 passengers, heck, even the much smaller 777-8 beats the A350-1000 in terms of capacity at 384 passengers. The A350 is a good competitor for the 777-Classic but it's simply too small to compete with the 777-X.
I just flew on the A350 from Bengaluru to Paris. I have flown on the 787 a lot before. There is no comparison. The 787 is a wonderful flight, but the A350 is a game changer. It was the most comfortable flight I have ever taken. It is quite literally the rolls royce of the skies.
I've seen a few trip reports on the a350 and my God it's like a helium balloon it just glides as if there was nothing there, landing even more incredible, turbulence, what's that??
Thank you! I’ve spent years trying to convince my avgeek friends of this, but I was always alone in the argument. Now that I’ve got a TH-cam channel on my side it will be much easier 😎 P.S. to answer your question at the end, the A350 is my favourite plane overall so I’ll have to go with that one!
Hope this video knocks some sense into them. I've flown on the B777-300 ER, A350-900, and the B787-9.... They're all beautiful. What matters most is the airline service. Fly on a shitty airline, and the plane types wouldn't matter.
I hope this satisfies those less-informed. I loved my flights on AirCanada’s 787, and would indeed love a trip on an A350 too. Published customer reviews seem to give the nod to the A350 as far as “comfort and customer experience”. Like you, I await the opportunity.
I've flown to Vancouver-Taipei roundtrip twice, once on an Air Canada 787, and once on a China Airlines A350 (same flight, too, Vancouver to Taipei). I would have to say I liked the A350 better for the most part, although it may be just me liking the airline better. However, I much prefer the windows on the 787, they are much larger and I like the dimming that still lets you kind of see out of them.
As someone who flew on both the a350 and b787, I would say that I prefer the a350. It is much quieter than the b787 and the seats are more comfortable for passengers in economy. As passengers, the a350 is unarguably better. If we were to compare both aircrafts specs, then that wouldn't be fair because they were both made for different purposes (as you said).
When I first flew on the Dreamliner, I was surprised at how ‘small’ the cabin was (in terms of seating capacity). It immediately became clear that it wasn’t an A330 competitor and in turn wasn’t an A350 competitor. Great video. Thanks for clarifying the matter.
I agree, and looking at the A350's seating capacity and the triple bogie landing gears, which is on the 777, it's obvious that the A350 is a modern competitor of the current variant of the 777 and the future variant, which has been delayed. I would say that the Boeing 787, which was originally designed to replace Boeing's 767, is a direct competitor of Airbus' A330.
Please go Airbus the A350 is 12 years younger built with more composites better wings and more powerful engines better fly-by-wire systems it a no brainer that why Delta and more American Airlines will pick later
@@77l96 no I am just a concerned citizen trying to put people on their guard when they choose to fly for vacation or any other thing Boeing has lost their way and they just do a thing about safety when building an aircraft so the next Airplane company is Airbus with a better reputation and safety record it is the way to go and come back alive
@@holdensv2000 lol really? Airbus also has a lots of crash records. Boeing seems dangerous only because they sell more aeroplanes. And also, an aeroplane which is younger doesn't mean it is "better". I like your comment, it is really funny, like a airbus promoter and propaganda. Aviation lover should love both Airbus and Boeing because they are really similiar nowadays.
@@holdensv2000 Also, tell you something you might refuse to listen. If Boeing break through all the issues and troubles they have right now, they gonna win this competition. You know what? Objectively, Boeing has better technology and technical ability and reserve than Airbus.

I used to be a Boeing/787 fanboy just because I was American and that was the thing to do, but have now completely swapped to Airbus as I started to learn more about Airbus systems, cockpit design, efficiency, manufacturing etc. So now I would side with the A350 for sure. I wonder how many other Boeing fans out there haven’t really ventured into Airbus that much and just support them because they are American.
THANK YOU!!! This shows the difference between just common aviation enthusiast, and the people who truly understand the aviation industry, market trends, and capability differences. Also, I prefer the 787 when it comes to looks, size, and usefulness to airlines, but I have not flown on the A350 yet, so I could not truly say which one I like better.
Very informative. But what it misses is the fact that range now takes priority over the number of seats. I’m a aviation strategy consultant myself and I’ve built plenty business plans / fleet plans for airline customers. And sorry to inform you, but for most of the airlines, the 787 and the A350 are the two options they have to select from for their long term strategy and planning. Large capacity aircraft are going out of fashion (need) for airline consumers, as evident by the fall of A380 and the 777s. As the concept of “thick routes” (point to point) is taking over, the “hub and spoke” model is going out of trend. Airlines want more and more point to point connectivity rather than huge number of seats to a hub airport and then smaller aircraft ops from there. Hence, it eventually boils down to, 1)Ownership cost, 2)yearly maintenance expense and 3)ability to make upto 75%+ PLF on most potentially available routes. So one can choose to ignore these aspects, but it is the reality and airlines are not picking between a 777/777x and A350, but rather between a 787 and A350.
Great story to tell - I didn't know the size differences. The A350 BandAid was well criticized - they went onto design a better plane. Pity that Boeing didn't take the same medecine with their B737 Max.
Boeing truly has to learn a thing or two from the Airbus A330 was first flown in 1994 and was a deeply modified A300 from the 1974 - still when they tried to modify it once more and called it a new plane, everybody thought it was a bad idea. And it was just in 2004. 30 years of basic construction being there and everyone went full boooo. Meanwhile Boeing modifying it's 1968 737 (that heavily resembles the 1958 707 in many features) for the fourth time in mid-2010s (almost 60 year old "bones") - and everybody seems to like the Max (which I personally hate and won't fly if only not in a desperate need). And then people be like "why does the max have so much problems?". It's like... bruh. You can't just stretch a 28.6 meters long plane up to 43.8 meters and pretend nothing gonna go wrong
Personally, anyone talking comfort is an idiot, especially on long haul(Is no such thing as comfort on long haul). NO one gives a damn other than those with gobs of money for maybe a layflat bed. The only thing anyone cares about is $$$/ticket for the masses in the cattle section.
@@odez180 I flew the 787 and the A350 on one day with only a 50 minutes stopover (I wouldn't even call it stopover it was getting of an airplane and rushing to the next). Both flights with Qatar. The A350 was more spacious and had a significantly lower noise level. The noise level is not determined by the airline its the aircraft itself that has a quieter cabin.
idpro83 it’s up to the airline to configure the interior for how much space each passenger gets but the noise level is a valid point. Not to many people consider that when it comes to comfort.
Very happy to see this explained! I think you’re right, people saw both aircraft types were made from composite materials so made the assumption they’re the same class - but they forget that the 787 replaced the 767 to compete with the very popular A330, and the A350 replaced the 340 to better compete with the 777. Will be interesting to see how the 777x competes with the A350 once the global crisis has tapered off and we can see true results.
If I were a pilot, I would fly the 787>A350 because since it operates thinner routes, you get to fly to so many more exotic destinations than if you were flying an aircraft that flies more to the larger hubs and airports.
Actually it doesn’t work like that, sorry. The A350 (Ethiopian I believe) flies their A350’s to Zanzibar, Kilimanjaro, Cape Town, Casablanca, Port Louis, Victoria, and Pointe Noire (I think) depending on the time of the year when passengers are most frequent. So no, you don’t get to go to more exotic places if you fly 787 sadly.
Another proof regarding what you said is what Boeing themselves are mentioning! They only mention the A350 as the direct competitor to their 777x, but not to their Dreamliner! Regarding the preferences, I haven't flown any of them, but if I have the luxury to choose which one to fly, I am going to go with the A350, because I simply trust Airbus products over Boeing.
you make good sense man stay alive when flying to your destination the A350 is 12 years younger built with more composites better wings and more powerful engines better fly-by-wire systems it a no brainer that why Delta and more American Airlines will pick later Airbus is building around safety and not short cuts for profit over safety so arrive alive
Flown on both, like both :) Comfy, modern, relaxing long haul cabin in both. You definitely feel a marked difference compared to the old guard on the same routes. From the cabin it’s pretty clear that the A350 is bigger, I agree with the remarks that it’s more reminiscent of the largeness of a triple 7 cabin and not a Dreamliner. The Dreamliner has always felt very spacious and modern but 767-like in overall size from cabin perspective.
I love your channel! This is the BEST video explaining the difference between the two. Lots of so-called "aviation fans" who have no idea what they're talking about! Thank you!
I've just recently flown an 8 hour flight in economy on the A350-900 and was very impressed. The noise reduction in the cabin, vibration was non-existing, air filtration in the cabin, mood lighting, size of windows, etc. all of which stood out. I can't say that it's a better plane than the Dreamliner since I haven't flown on the Dreamliner, but I must say, the A350 is truly an impressive plane.
Technologically the B787 / A350 are competitor, however they are not aimed at the same market segment. The 787 is made to replace the aging 767 and compete with the A330, while the A350 is made to compete with the 777. Unfortunately for the A350 it is because it offers only one engine, I think that this really prevents it from spreading...
Hello Coby: I have had the opportunity to fly both planes and I really loved them both. However, the A350 is very impressive with its interior design and it seems it feels more modern and spacious. I flew it from Frankfort to Shanghai right after the outbreak of the pandemic back in 2020 and it was a very nice flight.
I have flown on both. Norwegian Air 787 from LAX to LGW & Delta A350 from ATL to LAX. My preference is the 787. It was smoother during landing & quieter overall. Both are really beautiful aircraft.
“... recently retired their entire triple seven (777) fleet” - 4:53 If I remember correctly Delta cancel “their” (order was made by Northwest Airlines, before the merger) order for 787s for A350s as well as replaced their 747-400s/747-451s (again Northwest Airlines, before the merger) with A350s. Assuming I remember correctly, does anyone have any theories as to why?
It was the delayed delivery of the 787. Had Delta gotten the 787 by 2010 they likely would have taken delivery. But the delay allowed them to defer their purchase decision. Delta ordered 25 A330neos a few years afterwards in addition to the A350's. By 2016 when the cancel decision was made Delta just didn't need the 787.
Because the A350 is 12 years younger built with more composites better wings and more powerful engines better fly-by-wire systems it a no brainer that why Delta and more American Airlines will pick later
Makes a lot of sense. The era of 4 engines jet is ending anyway. There are almost no routes that will demand a 500 passenger jet that can be profitably operated. They have to retire their 747s, and if they are also retiring their old 777s. They really need to fill the gap for the large jetliners, and it will be better to just replace them all with the same new jet that can fulfill all the roles they need and really bank on the economies of scale.
A350s are wider and offers the same 3x3x3 seat config. Been flown in both I can say the XWB is roomier, seats are wider and engines is quieter. Can't say the same about japanese carriers as they use a different config for 787s (2x4x2) and nobody can deny this is the proper seat arrangement for the Boeing aircraft. I think both are beautiful and fulfill their purpouse over the average.
I've never flown on either. I'm gonna fly in a 787 in October from Frankfurt to Tokyo And I'm gonna work in a fleet of A330neo as a flight attendant My pick is still the A350
If given the option, I'd 100% take retraining for the 787. It's such a beautiful bird, not to mention the bleedless packs and better pilot comfort, it's all around just a much prettier cockpit, quieter too.
I love the 787 and would be flying it for our airline, if it wasn’t for the longer trips. I prefer shorthaul routes, unfortunately our 787 do not fly these 🤨 To me the A350 cockpit is ugly, and the window design looks like you’re in the Spaceshuttle.
Very detailed and logical explanation! I personally haven't experienced the A350. My only 787 experience was with Singapore Airlines which operated the dash 10 type. The plane was modern, comfortable and made the flight more than just a trip. The flight was an enjoyment. After the pandemic I'd like to try the 787s operated by ANA
Thank you Coby for sharing that information and data. It never ceases to amze me how many folks were fixated on the concept of 787s vs A350s...outside of technologies, there's no comparison.
Wasn’t the A350 a response to the 787 because airbus saw it had potential? I’m not saying it’s a *direct* competitor. Maybe that’s why some think it directly competes
I was a fan of B787, then I took a flight from Hong Kong to Ethiopia on a A350 that completely changed my mind of which is my fav, I still love both of these gorgeous airplanes, but if I am going to be stuck in one for hours, I would choose A350 for sure. I've flown between Hong Kong and Taipei on A350 a few times and it just further cemented A350 as my fav aircraft.
Great video! Flew longhaul on a 3 month old B789 and a 2 month old A359 on the same day, almost 3 years ago now. I preferred the latter because it was quieter and more spacious. (And yes, at the time I thought they were direct competitors.)

I really like the way you dissect these planes. Unlike the majority of videos on TH-cam, yours are very informative and a pleasure to watch. Thank you and keep up the good work! 👍👍
Totally agree... look at a350 head on..a straight wing with a twist on the end..not exactly awe inspiring.. can't beat graceful curved of that 787 wing!!
I flew from London to Kuala Lumpur last year; 787 to Doha, then got a pleasent suprise when finding out Qatar changed the craft from a 777 to an A350 from Doha to KL.. Considering we were quite tired and in Economy.. We really felt comfortable.. Ambient lighting, seat configuration. Air conditioning systems made the 8 hour journey Smooth.. It also helps that both 787 and A350 can cruise at 41'000ft don't recall there being any significant Turbulence at all.
I’ve only flown the A350 once, but every time I’ve flown in the 787 I’ve been more comfortable than I was in the A350. This was mainly because they were less crowded, which makes sense after watching the video. In terms of looks they’re both really beautiful planes. Also, the diagram at 5:15 blows my mind; not at all how I expected comparisons of these planes to turn out.
I have flown the A350 from Hong Kong to LAX, the 787-9 from SFO to SIN and the 787-10 from SGN to SIN. The configurations, seating, service made a difference in my experience. They were all more enjoyable to the older aircraft.
Yes I agree with you 787 vs 330. I made that same comment on IG couple weeks ago. Someone commented and said it’s the 787 vs 350. When I really think it’s 777 vs 350.
As a passenger all I care about is cabin altitude, humidity and noise. The seats seem to be airline dependent. On the first three points, the a350 seems to come out ahead. The Boeing 373NG pilot behind the Mentour Pilot channel seems to suggest the same. I’ve only flown 787’s and would love to ride an a350 to see to what extent it’s different.
I use to also think that A350 and b787 was competitors mostly cause they look very similar but as it was revealed that a330neo was its competitor it made more sense to me and it made more sense that the a350s competitor was the b777 since the A350-1000 was designed to carry passengers in the range of the b777
Great video! I'd love to see more videos with similar comparisons. Maybe 737 variants vs. a320/a321......love math when someone else is doing the work! :D
Take the A321 out of the equation. It is a mid range aircraft. The 737 is a dead duck. Boeing overeached rather than build a new aircraft. Should have listened to the engineers not the bean counters before the 800, never mind the max. The 737 is an early 60's design, way beyond its lifespan .
The seating configuration is what makes or breaks either of them. 3-3-3 on 787 can be really cramped in some window seats where the wall curves into where your shoulder would be. Meanwhile many a350s also adopt the same 3-3-3 pattern despite the extra width. So from a perspective of personal space the a350 is the clear winner in most cases today. There are of course exceptions like JAL with their roomy 8 abreast 787 and French Bee with the cramped 10 abreast a350.
This video and its analysis is absolutely spot on. A lot of people don't realize the genesis behind the 787. It was borne from the failed Sonic Cruiser concept in which Boeing was promoting faster flight times. After 911 and fuel prices increasing, airlines didn't want a fuel burning guzzler. So Boeing came up with the 787 initially looking more shark like and eventually becoming what it is today. Of course Airbus needed to do something but like Coby explained, Airbus with the A350XWB targeted the 777 which product line was maturing and starting to age. Hence, the A350-900 is direct competitor to 777-200ER and A350-1000 direct competitor to 777-300ER.
Thank you, I’ve seen a lot of channels making videos on 787vsa350. I’ve been trying to tell them for a long time that the a350 competes with the b777 and not the 787. More people need to see this video.
Coby you hit the nail on the head with this one. I think people confuse the "rivalry" because the A350 was initially a response to the Dreamliner, but it morphed into so much more. Fun fact the A350 also used the infamous lithium ion batteries that the 787 kept burning up. Once that happened Airbus quietly replaced theirs with the standard (heavier) lead batteries but airlines can still opt for the Lithium ion batteries today (and some have). Cant' beat that weight saving and power output LOL. I have not had the honor of flying on either so I can't comment. But I can say Subscribed.
Thanks Dr. Cooper. 787 and A350 is the same as the blonde/brunette conundrum. It could be argued until the end of time and never establish a clear winner. I did learn a lot today. Thanks!

Trekkie_ _0802 the A350 is a good aircraft to fill the gap between the Dreamliner and A330, and the 777X
I would say that about the a380, nothing like it
Eh, the 787 is a game changer in its own right too, considering how it's allowed airlines to operate previously thin routes profitably.
Thank you! I’ve spent years trying to convince my avgeek friends of this, but I was always alone in the argument. Now that I’ve got a TH-cam channel on my side it will be much easier 😎

I've flown to Vancouver-Taipei roundtrip twice, once on an Air Canada 787, and once on a China Airlines A350 (same flight, too, Vancouver to Taipei). I would have to say I liked the A350 better for the most part, although it may be just me liking the airline better.
I agree completely on the passenger experience.
My thoughts exactly.

Ok i will let you explain

That’s right! And Airbus responded to the 787 with their A330neo just to quite match its efficiency 😊

@@texxon3355 both A350 variants seat above 300 on average
Boeing truly has to learn a thing or two from the Airbus
A330 was first flown in 1994 and was a deeply modified A300 from the 1974 - still when they tried to modify it once more and called it a new plane, everybody thought it was a bad idea.
Having flown both I think the 787 is the more beautiful looking aircraft but the A350 has a clearly better cabin in terms of passenger comfort.
Personally, anyone talking comfort is an idiot, especially on long haul(Is no such thing as comfort on long haul). NO one gives a damn other than those with gobs of money for maybe a layflat bed. The only thing anyone cares about is $$$/ticket for the masses in the cattle section.
you gotta wait and fly 777-x to make the final decision since 787 doesn't compete with a350.... lol
For the most part the airline determines cabin comfort not the plane manufacturer
Finally someone got it right lol.
If I were a pilot, I would fly the 787>A350 because since it operates thinner routes, you get to fly to so many more exotic destinations than if you were flying an aircraft that flies more to the larger hubs and airports.
No, you won't. Pilot only gets pay when plane is moving. Bigger plane = longer haul = work less shift.

Comfy, modern, relaxing long haul cabin in both.

I've just recently flown an 8 hour flight in economy on the A350-900 and was very impressed. The noise reduction in the cabin, vibration was non-existing, air filtration in the cabin, mood lighting, size of windows, etc. all of which stood out. I was a bit shocked when I saw this video but it’s good to know that the A350 has a bit more room to grow in sales.

Delta has bought Airbus exclusively for the last 2 decades. They still fly some old Boeing/McDonald Douglas planes, but most have been retired.

A330neo
I prefer the 787!

A350 all the way!
Thanks Dr. Cooper.
787 and A350 is the same as the blonde/brunette conundrum. It could be argued until the end of time and never establish a clear winner. I did learn a lot today. Thanks!
787 forever
Huge Boeing fanboy since I could remember (first book I ever read was about 747s), but I have to give it to A350, just felt quieter, smoother and more elegant. Still excited every time I get to fly on either!
everyone thinks that the a350 and 787 are competitors because they look a lot alike
And there very similar in range and and the amount of seats
@@SierraDelta- nope, A350's seating capacity is much near to the 777 rather than a 787
A359 is about the same as B777-200series and B78X while A35k is about the same as B77W and B777-8
Also the range of the A350 is a bit further than any Boeing aircraft, except 777-200LR
Agree! Never could understand why people compare them. They are even targeted to different markets.
a350 cuz im a patriotic french guy
@Caleb Baggett lol
I agree, the A350 is too good for the 787.
I feel this video is a bit biased against Airbus...
that's just my feeling though, not gonna condemn anyone....
A picture book example of this imo is virgin Atlantic, it used to operate a widebody fleet of A330-300’s for the lower capacity routes and a340-600‘s for the higher capacity routes… now they are gradually replacing the a330-300 with the 787-9 and the a340-600 with the a350-1000… for further reference: the a340-300 competed with the 777-200 while the a340-600 was airbus answer to the 777-300 and airbus specifically designed the a350-1000 as a 777-300/a340-600 replacement, which virgin Atlantic exactly did…
I prefer the 777 over all the other planes you mentioned, although from passenger experience, the 787 is probably the winner.
I'm a Boeing fan, I'm going to say I prefer the 787 from a more technical view, but I think that a normal passenger would prefer the better build and more refined A350. I have flown on both of the same airline, I must say that the A350 is better build
