I think it was more of a jab toward Kevin Costner who used his American accent in Prince of Thieves two years earlier. The story goes he tried an English accent early in production but the director thought it was awful so he told Costner to just speak in his normal voice. Ouch. 😄
The rapping minstrels is one of the best gags in Men in Tights, but has a lot of subtlety. For context, a 'minstrel show' is when white people perform in blackface. So for Mel to have actual medieval minstrels rapping and played by black actors is a jab at racism on par with most of Blazing Saddles.
Huh, never knew that. That's pretty brilliant. Some of the subtler things with white-on-black racism are lost on me, as I'm not from that part of the world.

In the 70's Brooks had done a Robin Hood TV series that bombed and much of the jokes were reused from that. I saw the series on TV Land at some point. It's only like 6 episodes or something like that.

This is one of Mel Brooks' greatest movies, though my favorite is Spaceballs, and Blazing Saddles is probably his most classic film, though The Producers and Young Frankenstein are also up there as great classic comedic films (but really, almost everything Mel Brooks has ever done is golden). Cary Elwes is also I great actor. I believe his last name is pronounced EL-wiss. Aside from being in The Princess Bride (which you mentioned) and Hot Shots! (which you've reacted to, I think), he also had a recurring role as an art thief in the show Psych. Just an all-around fabulous actor.

Cheech & Chong Up In Smoke from 1975 is a very funny movie, it was #1 at the box office when it came out in 1975, and I still watch it every time it is on tv. And of course, all the Austin Powers movies.
Dracula: Dead and Loving It, with Leslie Nielsen, would be great for the upcoming spooky season. Another Mel Brooks, it parodies a broad mix of the older draculas (Christopher Lee, Bela Lugosi) as well as Bram Stoker's Dracula (with Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins).
I thought that was a disappointment. My favorite Brooks film is The Producers but not many people today can handle that one, which is funny because when he adapted it to a broadway show it was hailed all over the place at the time and that wasn't that long ago.

Eric Allan Kramer was also a great Alan Hale Jr. (The Skipper) in Surviving Gilligan's Island (2001). This was Dave Chappelle's first film. This film is spoofing more of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991). I love the shot at Kevin Costner because he didn't speak with an English accent in Prince of Thieves. It has one of my favorite visual gags. The one when Robin Hood is singing to Maid Marian and you see his sword go up in a silhouette. ~We're men (Manly men!), we're men in tights (Yesssss!)~ Mel Brooks does a lot of gay jokes that would be too offensive today for "modern audiences" although Seth MacFarlane has been doing this for 21 seasons with Family Guy.
It's interesting that Kramer has played both Little John and Alan Hale Jr. when you consider that Alan Hale Sr. played Little John in The Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn.
Patrick Stuerad as the king, playing Shawn Connery (and sounding just like him!) PERFECT. Even though he is a serious actor, he has a great sense of humor.

Notice the magic "life saving pill" is literally a Lifesaver... Brooks initially wanted to get Sean Connery to play King Richard, but he couldn't. So Patrick Stewart came in and did it doing a Connery impression. This was actually Chappelle's first movie.

Deep Cut Fact: When the newly recruited Merry Men are getting outfitted with clothing and weapons, their tights are taken out of giant plastic eggs. This is a reference to L'eggs pantyhose, which used to be sold in plastic egg packages. Traveling Gag Fact: Throughout the movie, a mole on the face of Prince John (Richard Lewis) changes position. It starts on his left cheek, then his chin, his lip, his right cheek, and finally his forehead. This is a nod to the famous "I-Gor's Hump" gag from Young Frankenstein (1974). In terms of the Mel Brooks movies, my favourite is Spaceballs, followed closely by Dracula: Dead and Loving It, and Robin Hood: Men in Tights. So for me they're all 5/5 movies
I grew up on an old movie, THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (1938) w/ Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland. It was a vastly superior telling than Costner's version.
Robin Hood: Men in Tights is another one of those movies that I have watched 100's of times. Your first reactions are the best. Keep up the great work, ladies!

It’s not politically correct by today’s standards, but it is still pretty darn funny. It’s actually one of my favorite movies of all time. I still can’t help but chuckle every time I watch the movie. PS, you both look good in orange.
Great reaction you two to a great comedy classic... 3 film suggestions for y'all that follow a loosely similar premise with each other (made in 3 different eras) but a different storylines for each film but all are great funny comedies with huge star studded casts in each. I recommend watching - 'It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World' (1963), 'The Cannonball Run' (1981) & 'Rat Race' (2001). Not a lot of reactors on TH-cam have watched these hilarious comedies yet and they really don't know what they are missing, because those 3 films actually all made me fall out of my seat laughing so hard (no other film I have ever seen since, and I've must have seen over 1,000 plus movies in any genre, being a film buff and all, have done that to me). All 3 are that funny and definitely worth watching. You'd have a great time with any of the 3, trust me on that one (oh, if you do watch 'Cannonball Run', watch the credits because they play outtakes and bloopers during them - it was also one of the first comedy films to ever do that). You saw this before, oh my gosh, BEFORE seeing Blazing Saddles?!?! Stop watching other Mel Brooks movies and immediately go to Blazing Saddles. Also, the line Mel Brooks delivers when the king kisses the bride is an iconic line from an earlier Mel Brooks movie. Watching Mel Brooks movies out of order makes you miss some of those funny callbacks. So here's your action plan: Watch Blazing Saddles then the other Mel Brooks movies in their release order. Enjoy!
Great reactions! Loved _Prince of Thieves_ and _Men in Tights_ as a kid, though, because of the humor I probably loved _Men in Tights_ a bit more. I still repeat some of the one-liners to this day!
It makes me wish Brooks had found some contrived way to put a Black Sheriff 8n The Producers & Spaceballs just to keep the running Gag. I would have loved that. I also luv this channel and it's lovely hosts. 💚💜
Fun fact. Kevin Costner was going to reprise his role as Robin Hood as part of the gag. But alas due to conflicting work he couldn't do so. But to be honest Cary Elwes is amazing.
Lets not forget to give props to Roger Rees who played Rottingham, as he had to memorize numerous lines in a rather dyslexic fashion before saying them again normally. A funny running gag that never failed.
Every time I’ve traveled to the coast of England, I always look forward to the white signs of Dover. That big, bright ENGLAND sign just brings me chills every time. What, you’ve never seen the white signs of England you, you, sign denier.
The interesting thing with Mel Brooks' movies is that his older movies are actually his most sublime. Think Young Frankenstein, The Producers, or Blazing Saddles. I think the key was that those older movies - while still very silly in style - were more original movies in their own right, compared to later more outright spoofy ones. As a kid I didn't know the older ones, I grew up with and absolutely adored the spoofs. I still do, but I am actually in awe of his older classics.
The gag with Prince John's mole is actually a spoof of Prince of Thieves. Alan Rickman's Sheriff character in that movie has a mole on his face, and (this time on accident) it will be in different spots in some scenes due to makeup mistakes.
What I love about this is your First-time reaction to this movie. It was great! I was 15 years old when it came out and did not see the whole thing years later. Now I think you should watch Blazing Saddle. Literally the Best Mel Brooks Best Movie other than Young Frankenstein. Thank you Southern beauties. And God Bless.
Blazing Saddles is really a great film. Another Mel Brooks movie that gets overlooked is To Be or Not to Be. It is absolutely hilarious and deserves so much more attention than it gets.

Force Of Light Entertainment Two comedies I highly recommend are "Dr. Strangelove or how I stopped worrying and learned to love the bomb" (1964) and "The Mouse that roared" (1958) which are both political satires that star the late great Peter Sellers.
*_The Crimson Pirate_* is a hilarious movie with "a hero women will like looking at" ... who even does the stunts himself, because he actually did all the "climbing up ropes" and "backflips" and so on in the circus (together with his mute first mate partner). It is an old movie, but nevertheless absolutely worth watching.
I thought at the time it was an okay movie. I would give it 3 hoots. Although I must say. I had to laugh out loud when Natalie described why she only gave it 4 hoots. That alone made this worth watching. Thank You Natalie, an honest, sincere and charming statement. Thank You ladies!

I think an overlooked gem is Loaded Weapon #1, also from early 90s and stars Samuel L. Jackson and Emilio Esteves.
This is honestly one of the most rewatchable parodies out there 😊
Elwes really did a fine job of playing up the Errol Flynn and Douglas Fairbanks style of Robin Hood. A fantastic choice for a parody.

Hollywood Accents Fact: The gag about Robin (Cary Elwes) being able to speak with an English accent is a reference to Kevin Costner's performance in Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves (1991). Sir Patrick Stewart plays King Richard talking in a thick Scottish accent, a reference to Sir Sean Connery's performance in Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves (1991). Some critics found Connery's accent inappropriate for the role, since King Richard would not have spoken with a Scottish burr (thus providing comedic fodder for Mel Brooks).

In terms of the Mel Brooks movies, my favourite is Spaceballs, followed closely by Dracula: Dead and Loving It, and Robin Hood: Men in Tights. So for me they're all 5/5 movies
I grew up on an old movie, THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (1938) w/ Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland. It was a vastly superior telling than Costner's version.
I thought the Sheriff KILLED it! Personally, my favorite character in this film besides Blinkin.
Tons of throwbacks to previous Brooks films, and other comedies on top of the Costner Robin Hood. Brooks is legend when it comes to parody and comedy.

It’s not politically correct by today’s standards, but it is still pretty darn funny. It’s actually one of my favorite movies of all time. I still can’t help but chuckle every time I watch the movie. 3 film suggestions for y'all that follow a loosely similar premise with each other (made in 3 different eras) but a different storylines for each film but all are great funny comedies with huge star studded casts in each. I recommend watching - 'It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World' (1963), 'The Cannonball Run' (1981) & 'Rat Race' (2001). Not a lot of reactors on TH-cam have watched these hilarious comedies yet and they really don't know what they are missing, because those 3 films actually all made me fall out of my seat laughing so hard (no other film I have ever seen since, and I've must have seen over 1,000 plus movies in any genre, being a film buff and all, have done that to me). All 3 are that funny and definitely worth watching. You'd have a great time with any of the 3, trust me on that one (oh, if you do watch 'Cannonball Run', watch the credits because they play outtakes and bloopers during them - it was also one of the first comedy films to ever do that). Also, the line Mel Brooks delivers when the king kisses the bride is an iconic line from an earlier Mel Brooks movie. Watching Mel Brooks movies out of order makes you miss some of those funny callbacks. So here's your action plan: Watch Blazing Saddles then the other Mel Brooks movies in their release order. Enjoy!

Fun fact. Kevin Costner was going to reprise his role as Robin Hood as part of the gag. But alas due to conflicting work he couldn't do so. But to be honest Cary Elwes is amazing.

Lets not forget to give props to Roger Rees who played Rottingham, as he had to memorize numerous lines in a rather dyslexic fashion before saying them again normally. A funny running gag that never failed.
Every time I’ve traveled to the coast of England, I always look forward to the white signs of Dover. That big, bright ENGLAND sign just brings me chills every time.

The interesting thing with Mel Brooks' movies is that his older movies are actually his most sublime. Think Young Frankenstein, The Producers, or Blazing Saddles. I think the key was that those older movies - while still very silly in style - were more original movies in their own right, compared to later more outright spoofy ones. As a kid I didn't know the older ones, I grew up with and absolutely adored the spoofs. I still do, but I am actually in awe of his older classics.
The gag with Prince John's mole is actually a spoof of Prince of Thieves. Alan Rickman's Sheriff character in that movie has a mole on his face, and (this time on accident) it will be in different spots in some scenes due to makeup mistakes.

What I love about this is your First-time reaction to this movie. It was great! I was 15 years old when it came out and did not see the whole thing years later. Now I think you should watch Blazing Saddle. Literally the Best Mel Brooks Best Movie other than Young Frankenstein.

Blazing Saddles is really a great film. Another Mel Brooks movie that gets overlooked is To Be or Not to Be. It is absolutely hilarious and deserves so much more attention than it gets.

Force Of Light Entertainment Two comedies I highly recommend are "Dr. Strangelove or how I stopped worrying and learned to love the bomb" (1964) and "The Mouse that roared" (1958) which are both political satires that star the late great Peter Sellers.

The Stupids. One of my favorite dumb comedies
*_The Crimson Pirate_* is a hilarious movie with "a hero women will like looking at" ... who even does the stunts himself, because he actually did all the "climbing up ropes" and "backflips" and so on in the circus (together with his mute first mate partner). It is an old movie, but nevertheless absolutely worth watching.
I thought at the time it was an okay movie. I would give it 3 hoots. Although I must say. I had to laugh out loud when Natalie described why she only gave it 4 hoots. That alone made this worth watching. Thank You Natalie, an honest, sincere and charming statement. Thank You ladies!
