I'll never forgive cod not letting people without dlc packs play with their friends, just cause they don't have the dlc. Feels like it's been a pretty toxic spiral since. Gaming industry reaps what it sows.
This is what happens when people who don't play games, don't understand gaming culture or frankly even care about video games, run video game companies. Remember when gaming companies were ran by the people who actually made the games? Now they're run by people with business degrees who only care about appeasing shareholders and making as much profit as possible while spending as little money as possible. There's no integrity in the AAA game market anymore. It's no longer about delivering a great experience. These people see the video game market as a cash cow they can milk. They don't care about the longevity of it.
this happens when assholes who only care about money get in control of any company. Happened to IBM. It's happening to apple now. It's everywhere. They lose sight of how to make the product better and only care about how to sell the product better.
And everyone wonders why Nintendo is still a beloved game company. They actually give players what they want. And even when they fumble on that, they at least take the hit and move on.
Oof Ooferington Just like apple all of this is the fault of stupid fucks called customers. None of this would be a problem if no one would buy this shit. It’s our fault. As much as I am sometimes proud to be a gamer, the gaming community is one of the stupidest I have seen by far.
Game Companies: "Lootboxes aren't gambling!" Yeah... then how do you explain this game company CEO admitting that they are? Cue an impressive display of mental gymnastics.
Remember the days when you could just buy a game and that was it, no dlc , no microtransactions. Just play and have fun, we have strayed far from the peak of gaming.
Remember when games didn't have constant support by the developers? You bought a game and waited around for the next one if another one was made at all. Online support requires money to keep going. A single purchase isn't going to be able to support that. Now people are complaining they have to buy digital, instead of used games. How else are these companies supposed to make a profit?
So, I worked at an indie studio which was then purchased by a massive mobile studio. All our projects got cancelled, we were told by the CEO to play their mobile games to familiarize ourselves with them, and the studio transitioned into making those games. So as someone behind the scenes, I can guarantee 10000% that this is EXACTLY what is being looked at and referenced at nauseum when it comes to monetization. And sure, mobile titles are known for it, but if a multimillion $ developer is using this exact lingo in one facet of gaming, I am POSITIVE a multimillion $ developer in another facet is doing the same.
Choose good companies to work with. There is always people needed in game development at least for now so don't worry, you'll find a good place. I'm personally focusing on programming and algorithm theory instead of game development because I want to be flexible and find a company which views I support. Or you can always develop your own game. It"s tough and hard especially if you're ambitious but the indie industry is not so awful either.

If I remember correctly the Skinner box was actually about how if the button only dispensed food sometimes, the animals would become addicted, whereas when it was dispensed every single time the animal would eventually become bored of it since they know the outcome
its not quite like that. im a psychology student. The skinner box is an experimental design on operant conditioning. its conditioning based on consequences following actions. most of the time it was conducted with basic needs such as food, and most designs didnt even have the electric grid. Its enough to provide either rewards to obtain or punishments to avoid based on an action (such as pulling a lever). There are different reinforcement-plans /-schedules that are different in the ease at which the behavior fades if a reward stops being given. Intermittend schedules, and variable ratio ones at that (reward is given not every time but variable within a certain number of tries ( i.e. its gonna be anywhere between the 1st and 20th time you pull the lever and then start again randomly) are the hardest to 'delete' as a behavioural pattern after they have been initiated.
"Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. They are not entitled to their own facts." Forget who said that, but I find myself reminding people of this truth waaay too often these days.
Best example of this was Saint's Row 3 where you could input cheats into your in game cell phone but it would disable auto-saving. Three months later they sold a "DLC" pack of unlockable cheats. THEY LITERALLY SOLD SOMETHING THAT THEY HAD ALREADY PUT IN THE GAME!
In Harry Potter Wizards Unite, you open a Portkey and then find out that you don't have inventory space left. So either you purchase bag extension, or you forfeit your rewards. Very nice, Niantic and WB Games.
So its not just lootboxes in general. It is a catagorized attempt to nickel-and-dime every player by a factor of 4... Disgusting. I never felt so appalled and disturbed by this. We need to share this with governments around the world.

I actually started studying game development in the local university couple years ago. I dropped out after first two courses were basically exactly like this keynote. Nothing practical, nothing about rewarding gameplay loops, nothing about storytelling, just about how to milk money and manipulate players.

Its funny how back in the day i thought subscribing for WOW was a massive ripoff Nowadays if there was a reasonably priced AAA subscription model with absolutely 0 microtransactions and good content id probably pay for it.
Corporatism wants people to be mindless consumers it's really that simple. Once people become mindless consumers these corporations no longer have to cater to the wants and needs of said consumers, instead the corporations themselves will be creating those wants and needs through the use of psychological tricks and then satisfying those wants and needs by encouraging consuming certain items or services. All of this is rooted in research by Sigmund Freud and Edward Bernays which I encourage people to look into in order to immunize yourself against it. The irony of all this is back in the 90's there was a huge push to recognize gaming as addictive when it largely wasn't, now that games are being designed by people who may as well be drug dealers the media couldn't care less.
Sooooo... Cyberpunk 2077? 🤔 No wonder CDProject Red is against it all. They're literally laying out the playable novella of the dystopian future lead by Corporatism. 😂
@Jibo Da Grey Isn't it still corporatism? They're still trying to bullshit the government and buy their way to free exploitation/psychological manipulation of the every day common man.
Everything can be addictive because our brains work a certain way. If i literally eat chocolate when i'm down every time and feel good after that even if my problem wasn't fixed, i will essentially be programming my brain to seek out chocolate every time a depression spell hits me at any point. Our brains, by evolution, have been hardwired that way in order to compel us as a species to do the things that would warrant success when it comes to survival, procreation, habitat occupancy and foraging for food. Just because we now live in cities and are in the wast majority, in societies that have their own rules and regulations, primitive centers in our brains may have gotten smaller as they're no longer mostly used in our day to day routine but they're still present. You can also use this psychological "trick" to train yourself to be rewarded with a dopamine rush when you do activities that would actually benefit you as a person. This can be either working out consistently and seeing the results, studying consistently and seeing improved grades, getting out more and meeting a lot of interesting people you can potentially have a relationship with, etc. The possibilities are endless. But the point here is that yes, when companies exploit this psychological "trick" to earn lots of money with little to no effort, as Lord Acton has so eloquently put it way back in 1887: *"absolute power corrupts absolutely".* EA has popularized loot boxes to such a degree that their massive revenue comes largely through microtransactions than with their game sales since they churn out a copy of the game with a little bit of change each year and have people still shell out bucks for a shitty AAA title and still have to also participate in microtransactions. But you have to be careful with the labels here. If you want to say these people are drug dealers, the game itself isn't the drug. The game is merely a tool that they use to deliver you their idea of "fun". The drug is the dopamine rush that happens in your brain once they reaffirm the "feel good" action with their loot boxes - which is the hook. The way they get you is by giving you a bit of free shit that doesn't cost them anything but it introduces you to this world of "lootbox openings", where you're given a short and fun demonstration on how that all works, where they reinforce a pattern of "see, it is that easy". And after all that, all you have to do is click a button, pay them a small fee and be rewarded with sparkly nothings while you repeat this action again and again, getting something of worth once in every blue moon.
I'm happy this video surfaced, and is resurfacing. I'm also happy that he talked about this. It brings awareness to the issues and also is evidence. If we can bring this video to the majority, or even all gamers, then hopefully they'll be aware enough to resist against the shitty practices. Hell, if we can get this video to the governments of many countries, we can potentially get that lootbox, and hopefully microtransactions, ban going.
Yes, agreed. Help the future of good gaming and resist micro-transactions. Resist the Fubar and Nonsense. Resist micro-transactions. Great points in this video of evil in the trends of gaming industry. To confirm, the micro-transactions are unethical, and they usually ruin the aspects of the lore to the game or simulation. This is especially true for a game like Fallout, or like Minecraft.
Was going to say the same thing. Kudos to this CEO for telling it like it is rather than hiding behind obfuscation and bullshit like EA, etc. Whether his intentions were to whistle-blow or not, the talk is pretty clear-cut evidence that these methods of monetization are unethical.
I would like to add that a Skinnerbox is not as linear as explained by Yong: The idea is that the rat gets random rewards as it tries to find the right action. So it is way worse in a psychological term, since there is no clear condition for a reward, which incentivies more effort from the test subject, irrational even. Something like rubbing the coin on the slot machine before throwing it in or pulling the lever longer, being sure to "when i do it three times the fourth time will be a win". Horrible stuff, I suggest watching the Mindfield Episode about exactly this topic.
This is not a parent or kid problem. This is a company problem. You can’t expect a child NOT to eat cookies. If a cookie is there they will eat it. Even if it’s unhealthy because they don’t know any better. Damn. THE COMPANIES ARE THE PROBLEM. Understand this everyone please!!!! It’s so simple it hurts.
terrible analogy. you cant expect the child to NOT eat the cookie, true, but if the parent makes no cookie available to begin with then what cookie does the child have to eat? I get what you are saying and I fully agree, the greed of these companies is amazing.
Dont buy cookies? Ideally an adult is supposed to know better when it comes to this sort of thing. That's the reason why you shouldn't allow your child to use your credit card however they feel like without supervision
It’s also a human problem. Our brains are chemically wired to respond to a certain way to the right stimulation, and that’s on both sides. The people running these companies are just as hooked on the money they get, the risks they take to make more, often to the detriment of the long term success of the company. Hell, the shareholders also want the money. This presentation indirectly mentions it. If a CEO isn’t making the ‘correct’ choices to get maximum value, the shareholders or another company, can take away all the toys you thought were in your pocket. Your prestige, reputation, income/bonuses, your other sociopathic business ‘friends’. A lot of CEOs define themselves by those ‘achievements’, sell enough loot boxes and you’ll get a nice plaque to put on your wall or the nice watch. The downside is that eventually people catch on, but the damages to society have already happened. To me, it resembles how cigarettes used to be built specifically to make you addicted, all while claiming they weren’t doing anything except give customers what they want. Essentially, humans suck.
I just love how the industry has went the way of giving less and paying more. I remember getting amazing games slam full of content with no monetization and companies being happy with that success. Now it’s chop the game up and get more money. Ripping consumers off. The value in games are no longer there for 90 percent of titles
The early/late 2000's were the pinnacle of gaming, if you ask me. You had something for anyone. Now everyone's just copying each other because it's the fastest way to earn money instead of investing in something creative.
Yeah, and then PC users started pirating anything and everything, especially games on a scale you can't even imagine and still are and this is where it got us. 👏👏👏
It’s half our fault from letting this behavior slide for so long. Kept pushing what they could get away with and now we are here. Least content possible and almost all of the content is locked away.
Because we kept buying. If someone doesn’t step in to regulate it would take a boycott of massive proportions to any and all legitimately predatory monetization. Hit them where it hurts in the wallet.

No it is not. Games are not an inalienable right nor vital for your existence. Piracy is always wrong. And you are not a freedom fighter, just a thief.
@@SpammerRapist No, it's not a right. It's a privilege. But you paid money to own this product. What these companies are doing is morally wrong, preying on addiction and selling half-baked products with the intention of fixing it later on but making you buy it initially FULL PRICE. I'm not one for piracy either... but fuck them.
@@SpammerRapist Piracy takes on many forms when it's simply an unauthorized reproduction, some of which are not as wholly bad as you would believe. Allow me to give an example, let's say that the game you've had as a child practically ceases to be for some reason or another. It could be because the game is no longer profitable to the company to sell CDs of the game out with the dawning of an online market so the game was left behind, the company itself has tanked and thus all assets have gone up in smoke, that the console it was once made for is no longer in production, or other various reasons that pull the game out from being produced any further. Now you can probably find that game again somewhere else, but the thing about that is that you are no longer giving a developer or company that money, you're just giving a secondhand owner that money. Nothing is gained in the game industry as a result, so why waste the likely overcharged amount of money for nothing when you could get that very same game online for free? This form of piracy ensures that no game is left forgotten in the wayside of history, even if the company that made it in the first place did. Another example is a favorite of mine, a form of piracy one would call the translation piracy. Let me set the stage; here sits Mother 3 for the Gameboy Advance, the sequel to Earthbound many have wanted Nintendo to bring to the west for a long time now that continues to remain untranslated because that requires a lot of work to alter the code. Guess what, you could get that game right now as a fan translation copy downloaded right to your computer right this very second. That too falls under the lines of piracy, but I will fight anybody who will say that something like that is wrong.
What I hate is microtransactions are never micro. A skin should be about 1 dollar at highest. And if you actually sold things like "new PvP area, 1 dollar", it wouldn't be a problematic P2W, but just a trivial cost to be more engaged into the game.
And this is why regulation, although not ideal, is necessary, because companies cannot be trusted to regulate themselves. They will destroy their own industry to make a quick buck right now
They'll destroy more than their industry too, lol. It seeps into the earth, just like the American government. (Not saying all politicians are bad, but plenty are filled with greed and disregard for our fellow countrymen's wellbeing)

Thank you Yong. Thankfully youtubers like you keep highlighting what is the sickness of the gaming industry. Publishers are now more than ever exploiting players! Ever since micros became normalised in mobile gaming they've been adding these into mainstream gaming. I don't see how publishers will ever be stopped but the past few years when ive loaded a game, a single player game and i see a store for micros to pay with real money it saddens me. Unfortunately gamers are buying though but hopefully gamers will see whats going on. Unfortunately their main consumer base is kids and young people so more education is needed!
Pretty much every company has a huge team dedicated to "How do we pry open customer's wallets and extract as much money as possible while spending as little as possible?" None are concerned with creating actual value for the customer.
That is the nature of all companies. The only way to change it is to quit buying their product. Just be very very careful about begging the government to get involved in anything. It will not stop where you think it should.
The problem isn't even that they want money. Or that they want shit load of it. Problem is they want all of it *now*. And, ironically enough, much like whalers IRL, they might soon be out of whales to hunt.

If I remember correctly the Skinner box was actually about how if the button only dispensed food sometimes, the animals would become addicted, whereas when it was dispensed every single time the animal would eventually become bored of it since they know the outcome
This makes sense. Just a gamble
its not quite like that. im a psychology student.

"Throws that video at old people in Congress and politicians in the UK."
No wonder CDProject Red is against it all.
@Jibo Da Grey Fair I suppose, though feel greed and retardation is a light description of what these companies are actively engaging in. Lol
Yeah, reading about Edward Benays was a game changer. Oddly enough, I didn't learn about him when I majored in Public Relations in college.
This is great ammunition for the anti-lootbox crowd
This is not a parent or kid problem. This is a company problem. You can’t expect a child NOT to eat cookies. If a cookie is there they will eat it. Even if it’s unhealthy because they don’t know any better. Damn. THE COMPANIES ARE THE PROBLEM. Understand this everyone please!!!! It’s so simple it hurts.
That will always be a group of people that always uninformed so this happen reguardless
terrible analogy. you cant expect the child to NOT eat the cookie, true, but if the parent makes no cookie available to begin with then what cookie does the child have to eat? I get what you are saying and I fully agree, the greed of these companies is amazing.
Dont buy cookies? Ideally an adult is supposed to know better when it comes to this sort of thing. That's the reason why you shouldn't allow your child to use your credit card however they feel like without supervision
What kids have free access to their parent's money? This IS a parenting problem. Maybe monetized games should be labeled for "mature audiences only"
It’s also a human problem.

@@SpammerRapist It's not piracy if you've already paid for the game.

sadly it is leaching into other industries outside of the gaming industry because of how effective it is.
And this is why regulation, although not ideal, is necessary, because companies cannot be trusted to regulate themselves. They will destroy their own industry to make a quick buck right now
