Thank you! I grow both and have never pruned our 4 yr old raspberry plants.

Such a great explanation! I’ve been growing blackberries for 20 years but new at raspberries so this was extremely helpful.

Glad to hear it, Teri. This was probably the first time I've gone into that amount of detail but in the long run, it should help everyone.

Thank you so much! I was lucky enough to find or be given free bushes this year. I was hesitating on pruning and I’m glad I listened to my instinct. You are a wonderful teacher ❤

🤯lol, wish I could remember more about fruit care. Some confusion happens when the fall bearing are also called ever bearing. Some people choose to mow them off to get just summer crop, some selectively prune to get two crops. With the wild blackcaps I just prune late winter and take out all the canes that are brown and no red, which must be flora-canes that just produced a crop and are done at the 2nd year.
I am on the second year of raspberries and blackberries and all are everbearing. This year the blackberries produced a few very large berries that were superb! I’m use to wild blackcaps and these are black raspberries and new to me. Much different flavor! I planted two different kinds of blackberries-Heaven Can Wait and Black Magic and the latter produced this year and multiplied greatly. The first one is making us Wait😂. The blooms and berries were Huge! They have Wicked thorns. The raspberries are from Costco.
My question is, should I have planted them farther apart? All are in the same row and put up cable line thinking I would keep them neat. The Black Magic are appearing aggressive as there are 7 new plants 😮
I’m thinking I will need to create rows for each so I can tell them apart. My other thinking is to just let them all do their thing and be happy they are growing. It’s a hot microclimate here Z5a, WI and we just installed drip irrigation this year. I’m elated they are surviving as we had very warm start with late frost that killed plants.
My other problem is dwarf apple trees I planted last year about 4’ apart to train in columnar fashion and this year they sell columnar trees🙄. Think I will need to move ever other one of the 5 and let them grow naturally. Many have commented they may be too close, but I anticipated on pruning in columnar fashion at the time. I suppose the best time to move the two would be spring?
Thank you for berry info. Fruit care is not something that comes natural to me as there are so many opinions. Apple tree spraying when you want least chemicals, blueberry soil acid and why I can’t grow a peach tree here, but 2 miles away had a beautiful tree.

I finally understand! You are an excellent teacher! What type of soil amendments do you add ( if any ) to your raspberry patch.

I'm so glad this video was helpful! Thank you. We mostly just add compost to the bed in the spring but we occasionally use an organic fertilizer.

Someone gave me some canes a long time ago and said they cut them all back late winter to about 6” tall, so I’ve been doing that, and we get a mid summer crop and a fall crop! They must be a very vigorous fall bearing type I’m guessing. 😊 We’re on the west side of the state, 8a.

That's great. So you eventually remove the dead canes, right?

@@SusansInTheGarden They all get cut back, but I do easily break off the short stubs that are obviously dead. Every few years, I do go through and thin out any roots/canes that aren’t good anymore to give the newer ones more room. They spread pretty quickly.

I found it very interesting añd I do not have any raspberries, just three young blueberries. With all the berries you have do you have any trouble with birds or squirrels?

    • @SusansInTheGarden

Hi, Marilyn. We rarely have squirrel problems but birds do love the blueberries in particular. We cover our blueberry bed with a huge sheet of floating row cover, once the berries are developing, and that works great. Bird netting isn't a good option because the berries get caught in it. So whenever you need to pick them and remove the netting, the berries fly all over the place!

What's the difference between a naturally growing black berry and like a Darrow or Prime Ark blackberry? I tried to grow the latter[s], but didn't work at all. Latitude 47. To me, the wild ones are small like red raspberries.

The blackberries that grow wild tend to be VERY thorny and relatively small. We are growing 'Triple Crown' thornless blackberries.
