ROCK PINE TREE MAINTENANCE (Managing pruning and caterpillar issues at the off-grid homestead) *73

Greetings, dear friends, and a warm welcome to this week's video.
Every year, my pine trees become home to processionary caterpillars. These pesky creatures are native to the Iberian Peninsula, but their population is rapidly increasing due to global temperature rise. In the past, they usually would only construct one nest per tree. But now, they're building several in each one. The sheer number of these caterpillars is evident in the abundance of brown pine needles, causing much suffering and damage to the pine trees.
Luckily, these rock pines inside the homestead perimeter are small, making it easy for me to reach the nests. I carefully cut the nests down and burn them to prevent the caterpillars from escaping. Once I've dealt with all the nests, except for the one in the maritime pine, (as it was located at the top and cutting the tops of pines would permanently disfigure them), I took the opportunity to do some low branch pruning to encourage their growth.
