      Reality is more complicated than the show Vikings portray. Hrolfr didn't betray anything. His rule of Normandy gave Vikings a base in Frankia from where to resupply and launch raids on other parts of Frankia.

      Yeah the TV show takes a WHOLE lot of liberties with history. Kind of a shame given it is on the History Channel...

    "Out of nowhere, two vikings come out in full blown battle"
    Uh no mate. That were two men fighting ridiculously. In no way can one call that efficient fighting.

      Lol love the people critiques who have never once fight for there life with sword or shield saying this ancient art used by the most fearless strongest and overwhelming warriors in history isn't proper fighting sure it looks weird with these guys because to my knowledge they never fought for life so no experience but I bet if you picked up a sword they'd cut you down before you blinked twice.

      Jay the Gray you know that most Vikings where farmers that just got on a viking only the wealthy Vikings actuly knew how to fight effectivly wich that isnt cutting randomly towards your opponents shield that will get you killed in a duel and i think that it would be impossible for one of them to cut me down in a duel since i would be smart and use armor

    I thought hey something about viking martial arts then I saw the travel channel was responsible for the video "o fuck" and then they started talking about the vikings as a people second "o fuck" and then they said the name rollo (its rólfr in old norse changed to sound more classical it's like valhalla it's actually valhǫl ) third "o fuck" at that point all historical accuracy was thrown out of the window and I gave up

      @@meginna8354 Old Norse was spoken from 700s-900s CE, Old Norwegian split from that in the 1000s CE. It further developed into Middle Norwegian after Norway was hit with the black plague, causing the language to change rapidly (Sound changes, removing many noun and verb cases etc). It then became Norwegian Bokmål once the Danes took over and turned Danish into the national written and spoken language.
      Oh, and the viking age ended in 1066, with the christianisation of much of Europe, including Scandinavia and it's territories.

      @@lumethecrow9808 Nah. Old Norse split off in like 1200 and became old Norwegian. Anyway, dropping the "H" before R and L was a later Norwegian thing in like 1200. Rollo was named Hrólfr and called himself Hrólfr.

    I was told by my grandmother that we were descended from a guy named "Tursten" who was Norse in origin, apparently a flag bearer for a king and took part in some major battles. It's just a shame that he was a flag bearer. I imagine that's a bit like being in band at a sports event. Anyway she's dead now, so I guess the details are lost to history 🤷‍♂️

    • @deli9437
      @deli9437 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Flag bearers often have high status in pre-modern militaries. Even though your ancestor didn’t fight, I’m sure he was well respected enough to be chosen to be a flag bearer.
