  • Replacing bearings can go from no sweat to sweating bullets if the inner race and ball bearings get blown out during the removal process. With painted carbon fiber all around there is no room for error when removing a stuck outer race from a Trek BB90 bike. Stop sweating. It’s easy when you know how, so here’s how…

    I love that you talk and move at 1.25 normal speed, get straight to the point, and only leave essentials in the cut.

      Get the Harbor Freight punches. They're cheap and work great.

    Thanks saved me an expensive trip to the bike store. $20 dremmil at Harbor Freight and a small prybar set $7 the had had just enough of an angle then when I notched the race it came out just like in your video. Thanks so much for posting the video

    Nice useful vid! I just used your Dremmel technique to cut a sharp step in the stuck ring.... Then I managed to get sufficient purchase with a sharp chisel to get it out.

    Say I don't have the proper tool to use on the other side to push it out. Could I just use the dremmil tool to cut it out. & I assume I would have to be very careful to not hit the frame would a dremmil tool do the job

    • @BBInfinite
      @BBInfinite  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The cutoff wheel is round, so you have to overshoot to get at the max cutting depth. You'd have to cut into the bearing backstop (the frame) appreciably to cut completely through the race.

    BBInfinite, when punching out a frame bearing from behind, where's the best place to set the punch to avoid separating the races from each other -- as close to the outside of the outer race ring as possible?

    • @BBInfinite
      @BBInfinite  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're stuck whacking the inner race because the outer race will be obscured by the bearing backstop machined into any housing. Breaking a bearing is very rare. If it does break, and you're left with an outer race stuck in the bore, do this: th-cam.com/video/9YiezRimlHU/w-d-xo.html

    How to remove the inner bearing when it stuck in the crank? Because there's not enough space to pull it out

    • @BBInfinite
      @BBInfinite  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the inner race is stuck on the crank spindle, we recommend freezing the crank if it's aluminum. Just freeze the crank arm that has the spindle attached to it. The aluminum spindle will shrink very slightly, the steel of the race will not. Then get a piece of soft wood, like a pine 2x4, and set in on the concrete floor. Remove the crank from the freezer, quickly, take the crank arm in one hand, and use it like a hammer, driving the crank spindle down onto the wood as squarely as possible. After a few whacks the inner race should slide down the spindle enough for you to get a grip on it. If the crank has a steel spindle you're kinda out of luck and you'll just have to cut the race off at a steep angle with a cutoff wheel and a dremel.

      @@BBInfinite it's ultegra. I couldn't pull out the crank because the stuck bearing is in the left side. Fortunately, I took it out with hard effort last night. Thor's hammer done it's job 😂
      And the case with the stuck outer race like in the video, I pulled the outer bearing with 30 mm removal mounting block. It made work easier.
      Thank you for your reply.

    This is what happened to my front wheel on my bike I can see the track where the balls roll so I assume that was part of the bearing

    • @BBInfinite
      @BBInfinite  ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably. You may be able to use this same method IF the bearings was large enough to give you room for this procedure.

    you could angle the cut one way the tools' tip would sit in it better

    Specialized have moved back to threaded BBS.....

    • @BBInfinite
      @BBInfinite  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, huge mistake no the part of Specialized. If they were going to go back to threaded they should've gone T47. English BB's are too restrictive when it comes to 30mm and DUB. Silly move by a manufacturer that tends to make good choices.

  • @81antiloop
    @81antiloop 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another method: Freeze spray and a blind bearing puller on the bearing run. I had a stuck headset outer race which came through with that method. Didnt wanna risk using a dremel!

    • @BBInfinite
      @BBInfinite  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Freezing will not work because the race is steel. You'll never get it cold enough, long enough, to shrink it with spray. If it was aluminum, sure, that'd work. Running a Dremel isn't risky as long as you're careful.
