I don't know. Isserlis is a great musician and cellist, but why doesn't he give some advice on how to play the instrument better? 3+4+6x8 bars... Please! I get that's important too, but why doesn't he teach the cellist (Cello Sonata) to produce a more substantial sound? Why doesn't he tell the violist (string quartet) that she is starting the piece in the wrong place of the bow, hence the false accent? Anything about string instrument technique? Nothing? Not everything is solved with musical advices. 🙄
The cellist had more issue with decay than with sound overall, which is a problem with how they view the piece musically / the sound in their head. The violist’s third bar first note had less to do with being in the lower half and more with respecting the slur ending the first two bars, instead of connecting the A# forward like a typical leading tone. It’s less effective to address what they’re doing than solve why they’re doing it.
@billybobr2e2 I disagree. Furthermore, the video is proof that Isserlis' musical corrections did nothing to improve what these musicians were doing. I would definitely focus on what they are doing and the musical consequences it has.
Played this piece many years ago under the tutorage of the late great Jane Cowan (Stephen’s tutor also) she instilled the question and answer in the phrasing between the instruments and also a faster bow doesn’t mean a faster tempo, I enjoy the masterclasses
Today I have learned the deep meaning of Fauré. Thank's so much!🥰
Absolutely enlightening, thank you!
There seems to be silence for a minute or so after the first few bars (at least on my iPad). Fortunately sound then returns!

@ well it doesn’t sound like I can change your mind with evidence. Have a good day
@@billybobr2e2 I'm sorry to have wasted your time. I haven't heard or seen any evidence in the video that would change my mind.
Cheers!

Classical seems like a nightmare.
