Hampi or Vijayanagara is a town in the Vijayanagara district in the Indian state of Karnataka.[2] Located along the Tungabhadra River in the east and center part of the state, Hampi is near the city of Hosapete. It is famous for hosting the Hampi Group of Monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.[3]
Hampi is mentioned in Ashokan epigraphy and texts such as the Ramayana and the Puranas of Hinduism as Pampaa Devi Tirtha Kshetra.[4][5][6] Hampi was a part of Vijayanara, the capital of the Hindu Vijayanagara Empire in the 14th-century.[4][7] It became a center of economic and administrative activity of the Deccan region kingdom founded in opposition to Islamic Sultanates in South India. After over two centuries of rule, the Empire was defeated and abandoned. Since the 19th-century, its ruins have been an important site for archaeologists and historians.[
Hampi is situated on the banks of the Tungabhadra River, midst rocky hills. It is 348 kilometres (216 mi) from Bangalore, 385 kilometres (239 mi) from Hyderabad and 266 kilometres (165 mi) from Belgaum. The closest railway station is in the city of Hosapete (Hospet), 13 km away, and the closest airport is 32 kilometres (20 mi) Jindal Vijaynagar Airport in Toranagallu, which has connections to Bengaluru.[citation needed] Overnight buses and trains also connect Hampi with Goa and Bengaluru.
हंपी किंवा हम्पे हे भारताच्या कर्नाटक राज्यातील पुरातन शहर आहे. मध्य कर्नाटकाच्या पूर्व भागात होस्पेट शहराजवळ असलेले हंपीचे अवशेष युनेस्कोचे भारतातील एक जागतिक वारसा स्थान आहे.[२] अनेक इमारती व मंदिरांचे हे अवशेष ४,१०० हेक्टर (१६ चौ. मैल) विस्तारात पसरलेले आहेत. यांत दक्षिण भारतातील शेवटच्या महान हिंदू साम्राज्यातील १,६००हून अधिक "किल्ले, नदीकाठच्या इमारती, राजवाडे, मंदिरे, मंडप, स्मारके, जल संरचना, इत्यादीचा" समावेश आहे.[३] यांचे वर्णन युनेस्कोने कठोर आणि भव्य स्थान (austere, grandiose site) असे केले आहे.
हंपी नावाची व्युत्पत्ती पंपापासून आहे. पंपा हिंदू देवी पार्वतीचे एक नाव आहे. पौराणिक कथेनुसार पार्वतीने (जी शंकराची पूर्वीची पत्नी सतीचा पुनर्जन्म आहे) शंकराशी लग्न करण्याचा संकल्प केला.[६][७] तिच्या आईवडीलांनी हे कळल्यावर त्यांनी तिला त्यापासून परावृत्त करण्याचा प्रयत्न केला परंतु पार्वतीने आपला हट्ट सोडला नाही. योगसाधनेत गर्क आणि जगापासून परावृत्त अशआ शंकराला जागृत करण्यासाठी आणि त्यांचे लक्ष स्वतःकडे वेधण्यासाठी पार्वतीने देवतांना मदतीसाठी आवाहन केले. देवराज इंद्राने शंकराला ध्यानातून जागृत करण्यासाठी कामुक प्रेम आणि आकर्षणाचा देव कामदेव यास पार्वतीच्या मदतीस पाठवले. कामदेवाने शंकरावर कामबाण सोडल्यावर शंकर विचलित होतो.[६][७]. तपस्या भंग झाल्याने क्रोधित झालेल्या शंकराने आपल्या कपाळावरचा तिसरा डोळा उघडून कामदेवाला जाळून राख करून टाकले.

Yes, you have option of renting a car or self driven scooty/bikes as well.
Or else, you can hire a rickshaw/tuk-tuk for a day to roam around.
