Just insert and type your equation, leave a space and type #(1) in the equation box itself. Then press Enter
EDIT: To automatically update Equation number, instead of typing #(1), replace the 1 within the brackets by the following steps as explained in the video (as from 0:45)
    1. INSERT
    2. FIELD
    3. SEQUENCE
    4.Name it EQ

For fuck's sake. It's 2018 already and you'd think Microsoft would be clever enough to implement equation numbering as a default feature instead of forcing users to use this painful and hackish sort of way to get equation numbering correct complete with section numbers.

Genius in Vain That’s not good at all. The numbering does not include section number which is very important.

Thanks very much! This was very helpful. There are others commenting that #1 can be used in the equation itself to add a 1 with a tab to the right of the equation, but this does not auto update when you add other equations and is definitely not the way to go if you are writing a big technical document. I find it mind-blowing that MS word does not yet have a better way to do this in a more streamlined manner considering the amount of technical docs/theses/etc written in MS Word. Anyway, thanks again.

Quick note: you can update any reference number by placing the prompter anywhere inside the reference text/number and pressing F9. The same works if you select large portions of/all the text in your document.

Hint for the hobby typographers (forced to be by M$) here: The equation number has to be right aligned (flush-right) with the surrounding text, not centred within its table cell.

Here is where I am running into trouble, I have defined my multilevel list as "CHAPTER-1", so while crossreferencing, it appears as CHAPTER-1.1 instead of just 1.1. Any idea how can I exclude the text in the heading number?

  • @ahpang6678

so i have to bookmark each of the equations to different name if i need to cross-reference all the equations?
*I have tried "insert caption function" but it cannot just link the equation numbering, it kept links the whole equation to the context.

Most journals prefer Times New Roman but the equation editor in MS Word does not allow for this (without converting the equation to 'Normal Text' and lose all the nice features of an Equation). Is there a better way to change the equation's font? What font do you use for your entire manuscript? and thank you

Nice. However, I think it's a bit unwieldy when the numbers aren't automatically made "equations" in the cross-reference (alt, s, r) menu. But I was able to insert the equation numbers directly, although they are formatted the same as normal figure captions, but it works well enough.
