  • In this week's guitar lesson, you'll learn how to improvise a lead over the chord changes, while targeting those chord tones to create a more melodic sounding lead. I'll show you an easy way to visualize the whole process by first seeing the chords, then playing through the arpeggios, then layering in the major scale.

Thank you for this very timely lesson. At 75 years of age, I am going to play my first ever solo open mike night in a small honky tonk in the hills of North Georgia. I am putting together a set list of a number of old C&W tunes from Jimmie Rogers up to the mid 19and50s. One of the tunes I am working on is Fool Such As I by Jim Reeves (1958 version) and I am trying to capture the essence of the intro and fills from that recording. This video, combined with what I have learned about triads and 6th double stops, holds the key to unlock what the guitar was doing in that recording. Mix it all in with some strumming and I should be good to go. Thanks again.

@@rustyhighlander786 Thank you very much. This is my first opportunity to play the music I have loved all my life right out in front of people. I hope that anyone interested would look up the aforementioned recording and hear what I'm talking about.

A fantastic lesson. I’m so glad you used E major as your example. So many lessons are done in A minor. I find it easy for myself to use the major pentatonic in doing it in that same area as you showed. As I said great lesson and really appreciate you doing it in E major. You’re a really good teacher. 😊

    More like this!
The panic of not keeping up with the changes is what holds me back (from keeping up with the chord changes), I think.
That or maybe I need to work much more on counting out the beats or keeping time.. It all happens too fast and quickly becomes a blur of catch up....
I plan to work this exercise this week and hope to get a flow that I can come back to and build on.. Thanks!

The better I learn this stuff the smaller the fretboard looks. If that makes sense. And that wasn’t a 12 fret joke either.😂

So we use the arpeggios to get used to the notes we should land on, but we actually play the scale?

For some reason, (probably because it's hard) I never got around to memorizing arpeggios. Now I'm old and my memory is shot and it's pretty much too late. Young people, take heed, you will thank me later.

Not many people like the C shaped Bar-chords, they are annoying.
