    In '88 I had a CR125 '80 and my brother a RM125 '79. The RM was way more agressif than the CR. I remember at age 15 I had to hold on strongly to the bike, and whatch out with the gas in order to not loop out or to end up in a tree. In 88 a twin shock was an old bike you could buy for almost nothing. A pitty we didn't had money to buy a good bike, or even go out riding on a decent track, as our parents didn't care about mx. My CR125 got taken off by the police for riding illegal in the woods. My brother sold his RM before we would break it, and have no money to fix it. We hardly had money for a bottle of bellray and a tank of gas. Man we loved the sport like nothing else. My brother could have been quite a good racer, if mom and dad would have given some imput at earlier age.

    Nice review Tony , l started racing at 16 yrs old on the 77RM 125B in the 'B' class , then a 79RM 125N in 'A' class , then a 82RM 125Z in 'A' class , what a fantastic time to be a kid racing Suzuki RM's .

    In June 1978 my dad bought me a new 1978 RM125c for $950 otd. Excellent bike! It did everything well.

    The 1979 Rm125 was my first full size bike.
    I was just turning 14 and raced it in 79 and 1980. What a great bike, every time is see one it brings me back to those days. I loved the styling.

      My Brother and I bought two new ones in June of 79.We loved them.That is still My Favorite Motocross Bike.I loved that style of 79.

    In the late 70's I was 12 when my Oldman bought an RM125B (AUD$200) with a broken crank. We had it repaired for $50 and cleaned up the rest of the bike. It handled like a pig from memory with the bike going into tank slappers in sandy conditions and a 12 year old that didn't have the strength to keep it under control. The motor was a beast and had serious power with good torque for the day. We sold this when I was 14 and bought a mint RM125T/N? (Looked like this one). Handling was great... No more tank slappers and the powerband was a lot tamer so was a much easier bike to ride. I couldn't touch the ground on either bike and had to stand on Dads car bumper to start the bike! I think we paid about $500 and sold it a few years later for $700....
    40 years on I have very fond memories of these Suzuki's. The excitement, the enjoyment and skills learned I still use today riding bikes. Great Channel BTW...

    One of our neighbors down the road had one of these ‘79 RM125’s. He brought it out on occasion and rode with us but always had carb issues, possibly a stuck float as it would leak everywhere, it would still scream though all while leaking fuel, this was around ‘01 ‘02, and now that I think of it, the rear plates were both missing.
    I see more old Suzuki MX bikes from the early days on the marketplace than any other of the corps, just goes to show how well of a bike Suzuki made. I hope more are restored in the future, fully rebuilt AHRMA bikes are so cool!!

    People dislike the 79 RM back finder but I've seen it with stickers and if done right it looks pretty cool so I have A original 79 RM400 and it's going to stay original

    I raced a YZ125 in 1979 and rode several RM125s that my friends raced. The 1979 YZ125 seemed to have a stronger engine but the suspension was much better on the RM. Hardly anyone was on CRs OR kXs- it definitely was a sea of yellow at my local track and almost everything was won on a YZ or RM.

    Hi Tony, great review. I raced this bike in 1979 in Arizona. The powerband was so flexible that I could lug the bike in corners and stab the clutch to regain the revs on the motor without downshifting. I am now 59 years old and only have great memories left of this bike and other bikes I raced. All the best to you.

    Purchased one of these brand new after having 3 YZ's and racing for a few years and I absolutely loved it. The Suzuki shop was new in town and they sponsored me providing shop credit for every time I placed any boy did I place a lot with this bike. It was a rocket-ship. Won the PA Farmshow arenacross and Philly JFK supercross B classes both with this bike running aviation gas. After blowing up the engine I moved onto a Full Floater which was also a cool bike but I always look back at the 79 RM as the best overall bike I ever raced.

      I ran av-gas in my 79 YZ125, and blew up the engine too, (wore out a brand new bored cylinder actually). That is when I found out Castol-R (100% castor bean oil of the time), did not mix with av-gas. The 40 deg temps outside did not help either. After I burned up a fresh bored cylinder, I mixed some of the fuel in a glass jar, and immediately saw the oil separate from the fuel, and sink to the bottom of the jar as it formed droplets before my eyes. Live and learn. :)

    The 79-80 RM 400 best all around bike i ever had. Replace it with 81 CR450 might be why missed it. But even after got 83 CR480 still missed it. When got a 86 CR250 started getting over it. But missed horse power. Then 87 KX500 powerful didn't handle like a CR in the eastern woods. then injures and children change life. Will always be fan of the 79-80 RMs in any size.       Still had a PE 175, and it's a bulletproof ! rode a 79 RM 125 too, very easy bike for the beginners and I learnt mud-riding with it, then I had a 77 RM 250 to ride in the countries, 365 days/year. Never rode the big one 400, and I wanna say to you that it's my Grail !!Congrats man !!

      Lucky you and I bet that you will never sell it!! That was my first Motocross Bike and is still My Favorite.I was 19 years old at that time.My Brother and I could out run 250's back then on our practice track.I'm 64 now but will never forget that Suzuki RM 125N,a very fast bike back then!!!❤️👍👍

    as a teenager i raced owned a 1975 rm125s and 1977 rm250b and as a 60 year old fart am restoring an rm125c with wisco piston, and man after 40 years just fanging this little bike and hitting the power band in my short back yard and drive way is such a buzz, i luv these olds bikes , wish i had kept them all, last bike was a cr480, those were golden times days of MX, just the best bikes and racing along with screaming 2 strokes, so glad i lived it, thanks for your videos

    I had one of these as well as the unchanged 1980 version, the drool worthy 1981 and 1982 as well. The 1979 RM 125’s were absolutely AMAZING in the day. The bike was so good at the time. Things changed so quickly back then, literally year to year the bikes were drastically changed. The ‘79 RM125 though was a real bad ass machine. I even liked the quirky square rear fenders😂👍

      Kudos!! Yes bro', best looking OEM machine. This quirky square rear fender was the RM signature, as her front fender too, really in advance on its time... in my opinion, this RM had a very tasty look and what a pity, Suzuki didn't continue that on the 80 model !! I had one too, and I rode a 250, so it had so good torque and was really fast when you found the manual to drive it...Now I still have a PE 175, and i'll keep it til the end of life. But I'm still looking for a RM 79' model. My Grail is a 79 RM 400...

      I’m partial to the old RM370 as far as holy grail bikes go. I think it would be a lot of fun to build a 1979 or 1980 RM125 frame up with the 81 watercooled motor,it would be as close to that trick Harry Everts and Akira Watanabe works bikes in late 79- early 80’👍 twin shocked and watercooled!! I drooled over those works bikes in the magazines!

    Adding more mate I have a brand new RMZ450 2020 with a Rekluse auto clutch I'm 45 years old I love this bike (I'm from NZ). My local dealer races them strictly in super moto and they are 75hp (with thier head work, cams and fuel management work) on the dyno at the wheel and they want me to bring it in for a tune but I keep saying to them I can't handle 50hp let alone 70hp LOL. I did get my 1988 KX250 recently rebored and re nickle coated barrel it's now 280cc in capacity, force three reeds, fmf pipe and heavy porting it put down 54hp at the wheels on the dyno I new it was pretty insane but that surprised me. Good work mate keep it up.

    I inherited a '79 RM 125 with a completely blown engine. Since it would have required megabucks to replace the engine, I installed an XR200 Honda engine in the frame. I had to cut and relocate one piece of tubing and fabricate motor mounts that would line the front sprocket up with the rear (the most difficult part by far). What a wonderful machine it made with the little 4-stroke motor in a state-of-the-art chassis. It floated over bumps as if they were "painted" on the terrain and proved to be extremely nimble. It would drive guys nuts to see a 4-stroke "Suzuki" until they really examined it. I wish I'd never sold it as it weighed about as much as a cigarette butt and you could climb hills so nicely with it.

      Sounds like a fun bike to ride on most stuff, (I would want more power in sand for sure), but it was not going to get any hole shots or climb big hills with 12hp.
      Yea, you should have kept it for nostalgia and something fun to jump on. It was part of you.
      I have never seen a totally blown engine, but that sounded like a fun build and a fun ride anyway. :)

    Cool! I had a 79 RM125. Found it behind a dudes garage and gave him 100 bucks for it. It kinda ran. I was just a dumb kid lol. It needed a top end and crank seals I never knew any better.

      Some mini and super mini reviews would be great agreed, I believe there already is a CR80 review and a KX100. RM80s and later 85s were super fast!! Rms were late to get inverted forks on their 80s not till 03-04 I think 😣 but their powerband was unmatched.

    Hey Tony I've been twisting the throttle on the motocross vault channel for a couple years now. But i haven't got any merch yet and have seen a couple shirts that really struck a chord with me and my nostalgia almost sold me on a couple. But I still drive an old mini truck and am wondering if you could do a mid 90s ranger lowered with your hated (my loved) 99 cr125? Lol thats what I moved to big bikes on and it still holds a place for me and I honestly loved it but I've always been a novice really.. so not super fast or super slow.. anyway have a great weekend keep it up because I love the content i am a fellow moto nerd for sure!

      Bought a left over, but new from the showroom floor in 1980 for $850.00,---as a 14 year old kid making $1.00/hr part time at my dads rural highway side store.
      How many kids like me could never afford a bike today? Millions. But we will blame every thing else for the decline of the sport except the outside interference of the sport that made bikes to expensive for a kid to buy. Today, it is a upper middle class sport, with almost 100% funded by parents who bought their own bikes when they were kids, and that population decreases every decade. I really liked my 79 YZ125 too. I bet I have the most good memories from that bike.

    Loyal subscriber, love all your videos! My impression is a two-stroke is nearly 50% faster than a 4-stroke, but I have no idea, is that true? & what do you think of the power of this vintage Suzuki 125?

      It is not necessarily that much faster because torque figures and power deliver greatly affect the acceleration of an off-road machine, but a two-stroke does make a great deal more power per cc of displacement.

      I grew up riding, racing and modifying my bikes. Then I earned 2 engineering degrees, but have made a living porting 2-stroke engines for the last 15 years, and I think I have this topic figured out well today. The reason why, in reality, a 2-stroke engine is suppose to make twice the power of a 4-stroke of equal displacement is because the power stroke, (spark, burn, down stroke power), happens for every full rotation of the crank instead of two full revolutions on a 4-stroke. In the MX field, that had been true since the beginning of the 2 engines, (when finally tuned well), and it still is probably true for the engines themselves today, but not for the application of MX.
      What has surfaced in my mind is the fact that a 4-stroke engine just hooks up to the ground more effectively, allowing it to be used while making more HP than you can handle on a 2-stroke, (which is the only positive of the 4-stroke bike, but all a racer needed to switch in the 8 years it took to fill the pro gate with 4-strokes after Doug Henry). There are 250cc 2-stroke engines that produce 90hp or more naturally aspirated, (road race engines and drag race engines), but can you imagine trying to ride a 90hp engine on a tricky MX track with a power delivery of a 125cc 2-stroke? That very valid observation of physics you made is still correct IMO,---but not on a MX track anymore.
      I also say the tracks got faster because the 4-stroke engine is faster, (which makes sense if you think about it), and if we went back to the 2-strokes, (which will never happen unless we can put the industry destroying communist epa in jail), the track would evolve back closer to what we used to race on.

    Toni it's very simple mate the Suzuki Jimini 4x4 is sold out one year in advance, thier out boards are very solid and have a good reputation, there is little too no money in motocross bikes unfortunately Suzuki are not in hard times by no means. Unlike euro bikes brands they will not invest into a dead egg ie motoX thats not to say they might not. They took on moto GP and won in 2 years which is unheard of so if and when they want motoX they will take it with ease over Husky and the euro brands.

      Definitely Not.All the fastest guys on the East Coast rode Suzuki RM'S and never got beat!I was there,had one and saw it at all the local tracks.If you weren't riding a Yellow Bike you weren't Winning.

    The '79 wolod have been a better bike if they had kept the '78 engine with just a few mods, made 2 more HP than a '79, otherwise a great bike.

    You know, your presentation s Re quite good but your perpetual comments of "weird styling/odd looks", etc., indicates that "looks" play an important part inregards to performance: save your subjective presentation to yourself......Att tomes, I really can't take you serious enough except for historical documentation.....Not a deterent but leave your personal inputs to you and "fashion" buddies.....Ciao
