FREE Corvette C4 LCD Fix

  • This run of C4 Corvettes uses a digital dash with 3 custom LCD panels in the cluster. The LCDs become unreadable after long exposure to sunlight, because the polarized matt film glued to the glass loses its polarization properties. I disassembled an LCD computer monitor and carefully used a razor blade to lift the polarized matt film glued at the edges and then cautiously pulled it off. I did the same to the cluster LCDs. I then cleaned the LCDs and shiny side of the monitor's detached film, and cut it to fit the cluster LCDs. You need to make sure the installed film is cut oriented to the darkest view, which in this case was 45 degrees. I did not glue the film in place, just cut it to fit the LCD dimensions. Be very careful removing, disassembling and installing the cluster - either lower the steering column, or remove the dash pad, otherwise the cluster LCDs may contact hard surfaces like the column keyswitch during removal or installation and be broken or cracked. Then vital engine information like oil pressure, temperature or voltage won't be readable! They are expensive!

    As a quick and cheap fix for a cluster with no other issues than worn out polarized film, this is very clever.

      You can buy the polarizing film for $20 or so and cut to fit, but recycling the film from discarded LCD monitors may cost no more than a bit of time and effort. For the future, it helps to cut out a reflective insert the size of the display to insert when the car is parked in the sun, so it doesn't happen again.

    Temporary fix that also works is to wear polarized sunglasses.

      I just pulled off more polarized screen film from a dead lcd monitor that was free. Can't beat the price!

    Not gonna lie just slapping it on without gluing it seems to be a smart idea right?
    Cause then when it needs to be worked on again just slide it out and slap in a new one right

    Did you have to remove the old polarizing film from the cluster?And also did you remove to cluster from the car to do this?Im having the same problem and you look you have found an affordable fix!

    • @vanstechcorral
      @vanstechcorral  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, you must peel off the polarized polarized plastic film from the LCD displays, which requires removing and disassembling the cluster itself. You need to be careful not to apply force to the cluster housing so that the displays themselves don't crack from excess pressure. Therefore removing the dash pad, or dropping the steering wheel is required.

      Scrap LCD monitors are the source using the polarized film from their screens.

    Where can I buy the polarized film at

    • @vanstechcorral
      @vanstechcorral  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a couple of places, but I took apart a dead LCD monitor and peeled the plastic polarized film off the glass screen, so I didn't buy any.
