  • In 2022, there isn't really any excuse that holds up to scrutiny when it comes down to Teaching bad information for jiujitsu. The sheer amount of material out there means everyone can have access to the very highest levels of techniques and concepts. In this video, I explain how you can become a significantly better instructor in a myriad of ways.
This is part one: focusing on What You Should Be Teaching.
Part Two will be How To Teach It
If you want to see more content like this, along with other things like pictures, flyers for seminars, smaller clips, random hood rat stuff, ect, check out my Instagram. It is by far the easiest way to get ahold of me outside of messaging me on patreon.
    / andrew.wiltse46
If you just have too much money in your life and want to throw some away to some questionable causes (Panda Express Daily??) You can look at Me and Birds personal Patreon. We post our video's early on patreon, as well as offer patreon exclusive content and interaction (Rolling commentary, merchandise coming soon, Wiltse Brothers BJJ discord, Q&A's, answering technique questions, ect)

If you want to see some actual high quality videos and documentary type stuff on the rest of the Daisy Fresh Crew, check out the Pedigo Submission Fighting TH-cam. I don't have too much involvement in making those videos, but They do a pretty fantastic job with the production quality and editing.

As a Head Instructor/Academy owner, I can't agree enough with the topics discussed in this video. Really good insight into what a good instructor should be thinking about with regard to teaching their students. The art changes so fast that we have to do our best to keep pace. I agree that there are too many out there either going through the motions or not putting in the effort to update their knowledge base, and it's a disservice to their students.

Just a note on finding good instructionals, BJJ Fanatics/Dynamic Striking/Fanatic Wrestling is a great asset but it will not post a poor review. Not every instructional is above average, but if you try to leave say a 2 review, they will not post it. There are videos with kids running around, weight dropping, parts missing, unstructured, etc, but if you try and mention any of this information it will not be made available to other customers. But thanks Andrew, your free information is often of more value than most of the paid instructions available.

That may actually be illegal. BJJFanatics is such a solid company. They don't need those shenanigan tactics so that's disappointing to hear.

Some of the worst gyms I’ve trained at have been coaches & students that don’t compete & don’t roll a lot. Best gyms have been competition focused coach & competitors with a lot of rolling

This is video is representative of lots of things in the world. The best player/practitioner in a sport may not be the best coach. The transition is just not there. I've coached kids sport for years, but it's not any easy thing to transition from player to coach, there is so much more that goes into it. These days with lots of stuff around effective coaching/fitness, etc. we all need to adapt. Work life is exactly the same! Look at the changes in technology. If you don;t adopt and adapt, you get left behind. Great video!!!

I was just recently asked to teach a beginner class for my small MMA gym. I’ve only been training for a year and a half but i have been very studious and consistent with my training. I was definitely feeling the effects of imposter syndrome when my coach asked me to begin teaching, and this video definitely reinforced those feelings, but this will really help me direct my lack of confidence in a positive direction to develop the right skills and internal teaching method you described. Thanks for your thoughts Andrew. 👍🏼

I was already a big Daisy fresh fan but your recent series of videos has been on another level. Really hits spot on for me as someone who works full time and trains 6-7 days a week and also has recently stepped up at my gym to help instruct kids. I also am first the first time in my life talking to a dr and getting medicated for some issues I’ve been struggling with. So as you can see I connect with you on several levels. One thing I do wish and I know you’ve said you eventually plan to get better equipment like a mic etc but I would like it if when you post a “rant” or a long discussion if it were on a platform I can play in the background ground while working. What I mean by this is if you were to post it like a podcast on Spotify then I could listen in Bluetooth headphones at work or in the car on the way to the gym etc. I have to keep TH-cam open in order to listen to your videos. Stupid complaint I know but otherwise I have none I love the content and hope you keep it up.

As always, I enjoyed listening to your thoughts and learning from your perspective.
I’m nowhere near being at the level where I should teach anything, but some time down the road, I hope to be, and this helps me understand the mindset and approach necessary to do it well.
I know you have plans for several more videos on this topic. Would you be willing to consider one or more videos going deeper into the discussion of how to be a good jiujutsu student and get the most out of the limited time that so many of us have?
You touched on it a little bit in this video, but I imagine you could expand on it quite a bit. That’s one area where, as a hobbyist who struggles to get to class because of my career, I could use help. I feel like I’ve wasted a lot of time practicing shitty technique or rolling without a purpose, and while I have improved my approach to both of those things, I’m sure that some insight from someone like you would be helpful.

As a bb but not someone that makes a living out of BJJ, I found myself teaching one class a week at my gym. I would never teach anything I didn’t use, and would really spend a lot of time refining and finding the nuances and details. However, I found I couldn’t devote the time to do this properly due to career/family obligations and just stopped. It was unfair on the students and I found I could impart more wisdom on open mats or during rolls. It’s so important for teachers to be fully committed and what makes a great fighter does not make a great teacher.

Andrew, you are the man! Thank you very much for stressing the importance of drilling! I definitely fall under the category of a 37-year-old hobbyist. I eventually got to purple belt through injuries and family time. Fortunately, I got the urge to train judo at another gym, where they also stressed the importance of drilling. I realized that even as a hobbyist who trains randori once or twice a week, I can still drill every day on my own and improve. Old man hobbyists there is hope! Drill your ass off, and don't overload on a bunch of techniques. You will see results as well! Andrew keep doing you! I'm excited to see you compete again!

Id like you to break down different class structures. Pros and Cons, and what you think is most optimal. I have come up under a instructor who was taught by Ricardo Almeida/ Team Renzo after getting his blackbelt and teaching for 5 yrs he started training under Marcelo. Seeing the two different variations of structure was eye opening and I think helped the whole academy. Random thought: I dont know how he is doing but it be sick to see you guys collab w Osiander.......

This is fire. I’m a coach always looking to improve the overall process and so I really appreciate the video. Agree with pretty much all of it. Can I request touching on talking about concept and strategies while showing technique? Just whatever that means to you.
I do concept nights and show techniques that might not seem connected but are actually extremely similar. Or the opposite where I show one technique and show numerous scenarios where it directly applies.
Also the pros and cons of curriculum? I have something called relevance based curriculum where I have (I agree pre thought is crucial before class) but I do say 3-4 possible lesson plans for that night. Then I go take a quick survey of the students that show up and then choose one of the 3 that most people voted on. I see value in static curriculum(regimented. Think printed out and posted on the wall) in small instances but I personally do a vote curriculum or relevancy curriculum (changes based on votes or who shows up). My focus is student growth and I feel most of my experience as a student has never centered around “what i need now” and focused more on “what we should learn.” There’s a balance there but my thought process is that relevancy should always be prioritized. Would be great to get your thoughts. Thanks!

I started at a gym where the owner never rolled. For two years I would go to his classes and he would do all this fancy spins through peoples' legs to kiss of the dragon and other such bullshit that never seemed to work in actual rolls. Finally I just figured that because the owner never pressure tested his techniques that the core moves he was teaching were just fantasy. Not saying I didn't get better when I was there, but I think that you'll just get better by rolling, even if the actual class is garbage.

Would you rather learn how to swim from michael phelps, or his coach? A quote i've always remembered. Being a good coach is parallel to being a good roller. They're both skills that must be developed. Like you said you get naturally gifted guys who win, then suddenly want to teach. It doesnt work. Period

Its not F$ck All conversation, its some history, some practicality some solution . Whatever it is it is useful to the continued positive growth of Jujitsu and the avoidance of watered down weak azz, money grabbing belt emphasis nonsense. I think you should change it from rant to truth, because it they dont like it fuk it its atleast truthfu l
