@@fabricofdreams. You could hardly call my grandmother wealthy, and she loved the 20's. It also was an era when the average person gave less than $25 a year to the federal government, and that's in 2020 dollars. You might want to study the Coolidge administration a little bit and find out why those people were so happy with him and how he dealt with the stock market crash of 1921.

Looking at this list ( and plenty of lists of other songs from this era ), I am struck by the sheer number of songs of that time which are still well-known today. They have been with us for 100+ years now---withstanding all the changes in popular taste. Lots of people don't ultimately live for anything close to a full century, let alone beyond that. At least the creations of human beings in all the various art forms, and their contributions to our culture, endure as a memorial to them.
It is very hard to say, but I guess the people at that time got far more talents in everything, than we are today. There was recently a scientific research that pointed out that people who had lived in 1899 were more intelligent than the people of 1999.
I love classical music and baroque, but Charleston is my favorite. I hate to admit I haven't heard it for along, long time. Thank you for posting this vivid, brilliant and uplifting music. God bless.
We do have the recordings, but I do wonder if we are only hearing the hits of past decades. But there are tracks here that don't click in the same way. So maybe we are getting a better image of past with this selection.
