Great video - brings back good memories of last summer. I was around on the day you filmed those interviews (in fact I'm walking with the nose of the glider being towed at 5:54), and did what was at the time my longest soaring flight (something like 2 hours 45 mins iirc). Looking forward to seeing the rest of your glider training!

Cracking job Ben! Especially the landing ;)

Unfortunately the days of fully spinning the ´13 are over in our club in Germany. We implemented the highly recommended TM from Schleicher to prohibit aerobatics and spinning (and cloud flying, but no one does that anyway) due to old age, and repeated glue failure on the elevator in the last decades, and just recently again. The glue they used degrades under adverse conditions (moisture) badly.

At our club in Belgium also, however I wonder if the measure is not a bit too conservative; the spin itself is not really stressful to the airframe. If the recovery is done right, easing the stick back calmly to reduce airspeed it shouldn't stress the elevator any more than going back to best glide after an ordinary dive in symmetric flight. Of course, the prohibition should prevent a student from trying the spin alone once solo, and putting his/her live at risk by recovering with a hard pull on the stick, but on the other hand, not practicing with an instructor on board to demonstrate that violent action on the controls is unnecessary probably increases the chance that, confronted to an involuntary spin, the reaction might be inadequate. Hard to find the balance.

This brings back good memories for me. The only question I have is: where did you get all that nice weather from..??!!

We were very fortunate on that front!!

I'd have liked to have seen the spin and spiral dive develop more. However, the spin off a failed winch launch was an excellent illustration.

Hello Ben how do you like gliding ? Im a powered pilot looking to get into gliding because it looks like so much fun! Pure way of flying and is pretty economicall too from what i understand. Greeting from Sweden!

Thanks for taking us on your journey Ben. Really interesting stuff!
I vaguely remember Martin Shaw learning to fly gliders at, iirc, Lasham, in an Anika Rice TV series. I watched it again on You Tube.
Are the gliders that noisy inside without headsets etc - or is just the sound recording picking such up?
BTW my dad flew open topped gliders as well as enclosed back in the 1960s (iirc).😊👍😄😄

Thanks Muso, I’ll try find the Martin Shaw episode! The K13 is slightly louder than the K21 but you do get used to it.

Anybody that calls a K-13 a 'shed with wings' is a bit of a spoilt brat............... but then a lot of 'Junior' pilots are.....
