I had a juniper bonsai when I was about 13. My parents managed to kill it doing truly stupid things. I went to a summer camp for 2 weeks, and asked them to water it ONCE while I was gone. I put it on the kitchen table where it would get decent sun, asked them to LEAVE IT, and give it like 1/4 cup of water in about a week. Easy.
The moment I was gone my father put it in the kitchen window- full sun, in SoCal, in AUGUST in a room without an AC vent...and neither of them watered it.
I get home, see it, and I am PISSED. My mom told me to cut all the leaves off and it would be fine. I refused, told her it was mine and I would handle it, took it back to my room and proceeded to nurse it back to health. It worked. Within a few days it was doing better, and it was nearly normal 2 weeks later...then I came home from school to find my mother had gone I to my room and cut off EVERY. SINGLE. NEEDLE/LEAF. It died.
I refused to let them buy me another one. I waited until I had moved out.

That’s an incredibly frustrating experience, and I completely understand why you waited until you could care for a bonsai on your own. Junipers are resilient, but extreme conditions and improper care can definitely push them past their limits. It’s impressive that you were able to revive it the first time! Have you continued with bonsai since then, or did that experience turn you away from junipers?

You’re not wrong! Junipers are often called beginner-friendly, but they can still be tricky-especially if their watering and light needs aren’t met. A lot of people don’t realize they need plenty of airflow, too. That’s why we try to put out content that helps make it as easy as possible to keep bonsai healthy and thriving. Have you had success with junipers, or do you prefer other species?

@bonsaibarn or they keep them inside instead of keeping them outdoors.. that's how I killed mine!
I love ficus. Those aerial roots are so cool and they are so forgiving
