    This is a brilliant repair for cast iron! As an automotive parts guy, I will remember this as an alternative to replacing a cracked engine block.

    I have had great success using a similar system called Metalock in the UK. We have a lot of 'craftsmen' who crack cast iron pump cases by not blowing fluid out blind holes, then the hydraulic pressure caused by screwing in a stud or bolt cracks the casting or blows the bottom out of blind holes. Your system for blind hole repair is the most elegant I have seen though.

    The forward and back in tapping is to break the chips so you don’t break your tap. You can never go wrong doing it that way.

    • @pdubowner
      @pdubowner 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not necessary for cast iron, the chips produced with cast iron are small and break themselves off.

    Stitching repairs have been done on cast materials for a long time some repairs have already held up for over a century. Welding a very porous material such as cast iron leaves weak points on both sides of the weld.

    A guide block for the tap is imperative. An insert even slightly out of square can lead to the insert being ripped out. All the pull would be initially on one side. Kinda like you can rip a book if you start from the edge but not all at once. Also the fastener can snap prematurely. Same goes for Heili Coil and Keenserts. For Heli Coils repair it’s important for the end to be below the top one lead turn and the tang broken off with a flat bottom punch that just fits the minor ID. Failure to do this can lead the coil peeling out. The Keensert installation must use the tap drill size recommended by Keensert not the normal tap size drill. The proper install tool must be used to drive the pins down. Re tap the Keensert after the installation because they sometimes close down.

  • @Druid_Plow
    @Druid_Plow 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, I used to think that drilling and tapping to the next size up was an adequate repair. And I also never considered blind holes to be necessary for low pressure systems that a little dab of silcon can contain.
    I have always been, and will always be, willing to bring my customers up close and personal with my work, to let them fully understand what the job at hand is.
    I have often turned down thread repair jobs on major components like blocks and heads, simply because I was ignorant of a repair procedure that I could confidently warranty.
    This knowledge will be shared with my customers, and even with it I will still decline these types of repairs until I'm able to perform them with the proper tools and practice.
    I will still continue to use the tried and tested larger bolt for lesser repairs though. your alternators doesn't care if the mounting bolt is 7/16" or 9/16" threads. Only that it's held on.

      Nowadays we use tig is a faster dirty job. But even welding demands some techniques, that people usually dont use.
      These kind of jobs are even far more complex that people can see. For example, the holes must have the same distance, 0therwise the whole repair have the strenght of the weakest point and we dont want it.

      Isn't there a significant risk with welding that the part will become warped, or at least that you will introduce internal stresses into the cast iron that will lead to more failures later on?

    • @sage7309
      @sage7309 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know it's a tad late for a reply.
      Yes, if you've welded in this situation it would be best to anneal the casting afterwards. Especially since the crack went all the way through.

      Thank you for your offer. I have been out of the Machine Repair business for decades. Never figured out how to make a living at it.
      I can see definite advantages to your method over braze/weld techniques. The primary being restoring the strength of the casting. The secondary reducing the risk of cracking during the welding process.

For example it can be used to repair in-frame automotive and marine engines, large industrial engines at power plants or vessels, compressors and stationary machinery to name a few. There are many examples of the types metal stitching repairs found on the website www.locknstitch.com/engines-casting-repair-industry.html

    Do you offer rental for the jigs? I have a 1940's South Bend lathe (13") that has a crack in the pedestal. I could probably get away with a brazed repair, but Lock'n'stitch looks to be a superior fix. I haven't looked into your pricing, but I imagine that because it's quite a specialized kit it won't be economical for just one repair. I'm just a hobbyist so my budget is very limited. Constructing the jigs would be fairly easy, so is there any reason I couldn't buy the consumables and do the rest myself? Lock'n'stitch looks to be an excellent product, and I would in no way want to undermine your business, so please feel free to suggest how I can utilize your product without blowing my meagre budget! Thanks in advance.
