- On September 20, Apple released its iPhone 16 series, and Huawei launched its foldable Mate XT at the same time. Surprisingly, on launch day, the iPhone 16 did not have its usual price markup of hundreds or even thousands of yuan. Instead, it saw a rare price drop, causing scalpers to suffer heavy losses. Many began returning their stock the very next day. Scalpers are informal or illegal middlemen, who aim to make large profits by reselling high-demand items.

The Chinese are (or were?) iphone addicts. Iphone stores tend to be very crowded during launch and they sell out. It makes buying difficult. Scalpers took advantage of the situation by doing the hard thing (getting in the massive line) and then sell it to a lazy or desperate buyer for a markup. Too bad for the scalpers, poverty kind of fixed their addiction.
Basically, scalpers took advantage of the high demand for goods, but there is a risk where they overestimate the demand, leading to loss. These scalpers failed to read the demand for the new iphones.

I remember the Wii basically did not exist in stores, at least not in the begining. You could ONLY buy it on eBay or similar sites. As soon as Nintendo would anounce a new batch were shipping, they were already sold out before they even got to the delivery trucks.
Same with Amiibos for the Switch. Whatever is deemed popular sees the entire stick bought out by scalpers and resold for 3x or more on Amazon and eBay. You can't even buy them directly from Nintendo's website. ANYTHING that's halfway nice and sold at a decent price is listed as "Out of stock" the second its listed as for sale.
Resellers are cancer. That shit should be made illegal. Considering how serious alphabet groups like the ATF are about taxes and illegal money, I'm honestly surprised no homes has been burned down over untaxed videogame merch reselling (at least State-side).
Even in videogames. Resellers absolutely KILL the marketplace economy. You cannot get a good start in a game because the basic starter crafting goods, which you cannot even afford at low level trades of 15s each, are all bought out and resold for 2g each. Single items instead of bulk stacks, so you got 350 market pages for 1 item that should only take 3-4 pages, which are sold for up to 100x what they're worth. It doesn't affect established players, but it makes it impossible for new players to do anything but waste time by griding "cheap over-abundant" mats.
I'll say it again: Resellers are cancer.

There are a lot of people that want a new phone to be fashionable but can't get their hands on a phone through the retailer (mostly because of scalpers). The foldable phones didn't have the hype so scalpers got burned.

yeah i remember paying double for rx 580 at 500 dollar when its price should be 200 , 250 dollar with tax , next gpu i bought luckily was at the end of crypto crash , got rx 6950xt for 800 dollars , still a bit expensive , would have loved it for 600 dollar but cant argue with an online market

I think there is a silver lining for both phones:
* Apple likely did this to itself as it slipped that the next iPhone after this one was going to be a radical redesign
* Huawei is likely going to be able to make these foldable phones much more cheaply in the next generation
tri fold is kind of lit idea but not as usable for daily operation... i think a dual screen with a hug screen and battery makes more sense since theres less moving part that might cause breakage from using daily

I’ve had a ton of other phones since the 90’s including IPhone, and none ever lasted me more than 2 years… that was until I got a Samsung phone. I have a Samsung that’s 8 years old. My dad’s is 7, both work amazing and I also have a 6 year old one a friend gave me. I love Samsung!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

There should be a correction on this, scalpers in CN is losing money hard , scalpers in RUS and Hong Kong is winning big, reason being the region locks.
