    That comment about a clap to sync the audio was brilliant! So simple! Thanks!

    Cutting out a customized lens-fit from a sheet of ND is a great alternative. Fine tips, Paul!

    Thank you for the video - fun to watch and very useful. I prefer to record two concurrent audio sources: one of the radio comm and the other of the ambient in-cockpit engine sound. Then, in post processing, i can mix the two audio sources however i want to: clean comm radio only, ambient engine sound only, or a mix of the two at any level. Surely overkill for my cheap videos and more time processing, but fun.

    Ah, the sound from the audio recorder was so smooth and clean!

    I was wondering how those ‘prop filters’ work, thanks for explaining that.

    I'd love to see a video comparing the Garmin virb to the Gopro from an aviation perspective.
    I love your videos by the way.

    You can select a chosen shutter speed on GoPros, with the newest firmware update - no ND filter needed!

    • @jimbair
      @jimbair ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem is, when you slow the shutter speed that allows in more light, which will result in a washed out video or photo. The ND filter is needed to reduce the light getting in.

    Please consider trying out a single-axis gyroscopic mount for an in-cockpit camera. They provide some really interesting perspective of bank (or pitch, or both if there is a gyro for each axis). Instead of a rigid camera mount with a fixed view, the camera remains on the horizontal plane while the plane banks. This gives some cool perpectives as the horizon stays "horizontal" while the plane banks (i tried it and really liked the effect)

    You can match impedances with line matching transformers.

    • @JonathanCullifer
      @JonathanCullifer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      pswooley That would also correct the noise from the nFlightCam cable with ship's power by blocking DC on the audio line.

    Only one thing I don't understand: the 6.5mm jack that goes into the airplane headphone output, normally (as is any aviation headphone jack) is of the MONO type (ie with a single black ring at the tip). Why is the jack of the splitter you use stereo instead? Doesn't matter, maybe? Does it work the same? Thank you very much.

    Are you planning to make video about battery life of action cams? There are very few cameras that can make video of 2 hrs and these are not GoPro nor Garmin, unfortunately.

    Hi, great video! Do you know where I can get the cable at 1:20? Or is it only in the Garmin VIRB aviation bundle? I'm gonna mount my gopro hero 4 in the cockpit of a Piper Archer III, so I need a way to get the audio, and that cable is perfect!

    Lavaliere microphone is a misnomer. It's a body mike, lapel mike, miniature mike, or clip-on mike. If the mike is clipped onto a cord or chain (lavaliere means gold chain) and hung around the neck then it's truly a lavaliere microphone configuration.

  • @MikeKobb
    @MikeKobb 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Paul. Garmin's new aviation cable for the VIRB Ultra 30 has the USB plug right on it. No need for the adapter you showed in the video. VERY unfortunately, they don't have the power input like the NFlightCam cable does. The NFlightCam folks say their cable won't work on the Garmins, and they don't plan to make one that will.

    The headset's mic give you a return through the earcups? if not the lav mic wouldn't work.

    • @AVweb
      @AVweb  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nothing will work without sidetone. The audio system generates it.

  • @esgee3829
    @esgee3829 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    3:58 have you tested this method, with lav fed through noise-cancelling monitors and external recorder, vs directly recording from lav clipped/taped to you and educing noise in post? thanks

    • @AVweb
      @AVweb  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure what you mean by noise cancelling monitors. I usually don't have to apply audio filters in post. And overtime I try, I seem to make it worse.

    Hi Paul - Have you tried the use of the Bluetooth connection between an Ultra 30 and a Lightspeed or Bose headset? Might that be a good alternative?

    • @AVweb
      @AVweb  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. It works, but I'm not sure how reliably. It burns through the battery.

    I hate Piper Cubs. They fly like crap. No power, the controls don't work at all, ailerons are dead and the plane is totally blind. It's a crappy airplane.
