this video has literally every answer i wanted demonstrated in such a helpful way, fantastically helpful
Here is the best comparison I have seen with Moment lens ! THANK YOU
You should test Anamorphic lens and Wide Angle lens cropped in software see how much different it is in resolution other than the flare which can easily be added by a plugged in. Probably many people want to know that.
We’re actually planning this exact thing! Lots of questions regarding that. Thanks for your suggestion! 👍🏻
Awesome review guys, seriously, best channel thus far for us iphone shooters! Hello from Malaysia and Singapore
Thanks! Appreciate the feedback and you watching our channel. 👍🏻
Hopefully to work something out or collaborate some day! We constantly shoot via iphone X at the moment and uploaded our videos and shorts here on youtube at instagram.com/maybefuture
Very interesting, especially that you like the 18mm lens best. I find that focal length incredibly useful for the kind of utility photography I do as a school photojournalism and event photographer - nothing works better to get an eye-drawing closeup and show the environment at the same time. I remember those lenses fondly - Nikon 20mm, Canon 16-35/4L IS, the tiny Nikon 1 Series 18mm equivalent, and now the Rhinoshield budget wide 18mm.
Good informative video! That tip about the anamorphic with the tele lens is a great tidbit. Thanks!
This is a well-mixed video. Props to the editor.
Thanks!
This is high quality footage! Liked and subscribed.
thanks and would have liked to see differences with motion/movement of camera and/or someone in the shot
didnt expect the anamorphic would look that cool 💀 they even got the built in joker color profile.
This is an excellent comparison video. Thanks guys!
Thanks! Hope it was helpful.
Thank you for the comparison. Looking forward to the comparison with Moondog Labs even though I backed the Moment Anamorphic and waiting for the lens. That is a good point about distortion reduction using the Moment Anamorphic over the iPhone tele lens.
So why not use Wide angle lens and then crop the top for the Anamorphic effect, because both seem to capture similar amount of image data, is it not ?
Great video, I've been wanting to see the difference in what you see between the regular camera lens and the anamorphic, thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching.
Can't wait to see people actually producing content with these lenses
Sure it will be everywhere soon!
None of the comparison videos on these lenses seem to note that the subject looks way closer on the anamorphic. That bear jumped back a few feet when you switched to the wide.
This entire video is my whole situation right now
I love the lens. Used it today on a gig. But swapped to pro camera for finishing the shoot. Phones suck for client work. But the Moment lenses are freaking awesome.
We often use phones on client work as second cameras and on gimbals. Just depends on the gigs. Moment lenses are pretty nice. 👍🏻
Can to repeat this test with iPhone 11 Pro and the moment lens
Yes, we’re working on some new videos.
Nice...🇧🇷🇧🇷
Question the way i look at it isnt the wide lens with added black bars better then the anamorphic or am i missing something ?
The anamorphic will give you true wide screen 2.4:1 aspect ratio and a wider field-of-view. The wide lens is spherical and produces a standard 16x9 image. If you add a letterbox (black bars) to it you actually lose the top and bottom pixels. Shooting anamorphic you keep all the pixels and actually get a wider shot.
@@iphoneographers oki tnx , how would you compare exolens zeis to the best others ?
Nice and thk for this vidéo. You Knowles when you publish moment vis anamorphic? I need theres info to order the Lens and new iPhone
Next week. Thanks for watching!
One thing that draws me to the anamorphic is that it retains the perspective compression of a longer focal length without compromising on field of view. I am worried that if I get a wide lens and crop to the anamorphic aspect ratio then the difference in relative sizes of things closer to/further from the camera will be exaggerated, making the lens less flattering than the anamorphic any time there are people in the shot. Do you have any experience of this?
We look at some of that in another video actually... th-cam.com/video/IZR3cvCjQ2k/w-d-xo.html
As of March 2022, would you choose the anamorphic lense or the 18mm? I'm wanting to purchase some moment lenses.
It really depends what you’re shooting. For everyday videos like on TH-cam or more common uses the 18mm is great and more versatile. The anamorphic is a specific look and really best for movies or music videos ie. more cinematic stuff, etc. so a bit more niche. They’re both excellent though.
👏🏼 Great video! I'm thinking about going Anamorphic. Currently use their Wide lens w/no distortion and love it! When you do your Moment vs. Moondog comparisons, would be great to include overall cost differences + thoughts on design issues, form factor, weight, in-camera adjustments, heat issues, etc. E.g., My iPhone X @ 4K, 30fps heats up on multi-hour long shoots with the Moment case + lens which causes software issues. And I almost always use them mounted on a Movi Robot w/counter weights, but overall field setup time and support weight doesn't seem too bad. Curious how you and others feel.
Those are all great points to consider! Thanks for that. Making some notes now. 👍🏻 Sounds like you’ve got a nice setup. Haven’t used the Movi yet.
Is it better (18mm by moment) than the native ultrawide camera on the Iphone 11 pro ?
I want increase the quality of my footages with ultrawide on iphone 11 pro max
Romain Provost you get more bokeh using moment on standard lens and better low light f1.8 vs f2.4 on ultra wide
Great video. To the point, concise, clean.
Nice video! Waiting for the next comparison, btw is it possible to get the actual name of the songs used?
Thanks! Might be able to get song names, have to see... We use Artlist music. 👍🏻
thank you very much! when you get it please reply me here i will be very appreciated!, i will be getting my membership of Artlist.io soon so i can get the songs too but it will be really helpful if i have the names heheh more easy :p
Hi there. I have both the anamorphic and wide lens by moment... But I'm really struggling in when to use one vs. the other... Can you give she pointers or make a video explaining??? Thanks.
For us the wide lens is more of an everyday lens and the anamorphic is more of a specialty lens (that we mainly use for narrative style content or cinematic b-roll, etc.). This video might help some... th-cam.com/video/IZR3cvCjQ2k/w-d-xo.html
What do you mean by you get no flares out of the anamorphic lens in that clip, Isint supposed to appear, you taked the picture in front of the light
Meant there were no flares and thought there would be. A different angle and/or camera movement they would’ve likely appeared.
awesome comparison. thanks
I was thinking about this while watching your latest video on the Moondog vs Moment anamorphic lenses. Forgetting about the lens flare (I'm an old guy where we busted our humps to rid the image of any lens flare), I'd rather buy the Moment wide-angle lens and use it in the place of the anamorphic, adjust screen ratio in Filmic Pro and you got it--less monye and what appears to be a sharper image. To me, it seems to be a no brainer.
The Wide lens is definitely the go-to for Moment lenses but regarding lens flares, I've actually found the Wide to be easily susceptible to flaring, which isn't an issue for me as I kinda like flares anyway in moderation but there are people who definitely hate them.
The flaring is probably why I got the Anamorphic lens as well: if I'm gonna have to utilize lens flares when using external lenses on a smartphone, might as well get the lens that capitalizes on that and also gives me some nice vivid blue flares without doing them in post.
Perfect review!
Thanks!
@@iphoneographers I totally mean it, I was confused about if the anamorphic was the obligatory first lens I should get from them and thankfully I watched this review first. :)
Awesome, glad it was helpful!
Please ! Could you make a test of anamorphic on Huawei and on Samsung please ? Thanks !
We don’t own those phones but we are looking to test some Android devices in the future. 👍🏻
Saved me $100 thank you
Well all right then, glad it helped. 😃
Great video. Thanks.
Have you tried bitplay
How do these lenses work with the new phones this lense and cases is 3 years old.
They work fine. Actually use mine with new phones all the time.
@@iphoneographers the I phone the fact that the lenses have moved on the case have not been a problem?
No because the cases change with the phones. The 13 Pro Max is the only unknown since cases aren’t available yet, but Moment says they work.
dumb question, but please humor me as I am newby at this...where does the audio for that shotgun mic go to please? great videos btw!! thank you!
Typically we would use an external recorder like a Zoom or a Tascam, but you can run into the phone with an adapter.
@@iphoneographers Thank you for taking the time to answer...that was greatly appreciated!!
Is it best (in terms of price) to use moment lenses + iphone to start vloging than say a Panasonic or Sony A6000 ?
A Moment wide lens is a good option, just kinda hard to see yourself while shooting.
Sony a6400 is nice for later.
Safe to say. I should’ve just gotten an iPhone 8 Plus. The wide lens looks amazing lol.
Thank you ! This is exactly what I needed to know! Still recommend the anamorphic? Distortion is that bad??
Thanks for watching! Distortion is not that bad. Very similar to the Moondog. We like them. 👍🏻
You may use ProMovie for anamorphic. It takes picture from ALL size sensor (4:3) and after that you can squeeze it for 2,35:1. So you get true 12 MP image with 1.33 pixel ratio
Ochen interyesno! Very, very interesting for those of us who may never really need an anamorphic lens but would like to fool around with the aspect ratio. P.S. Looking at ProMovie on the AppStore, I'm not clear about where you would find this feature. Can you tell us where it is? Spasibo!
runbei go to gear picture - settings - advanced - use enhanced resolution for anamorphic.
Back to main screen - in video size and bitrate window set 4:3 12 MP (4000*3000)
Gear pick - transform - set anamorphic
Is there a huge difference of just putting black bars on wide lens? At least there's no distortion
You can achieve a similar look working in 16x9, but if you want true wide screen 2.39:1 then it’s a different story. We’re working on a video showing and comparing this.
How about trying it with the Moment App?
We are planning to do that, but the main reason we don’t use it a lot is last time we checked you can’t change the bit rate and so it shoots at the standard low bit rate of the native app. Maybe they’ve added that though. We’ll take a look.
Thanks again
Is it better (18mm by moment) than the native ultrawide camera on the Iphone 11 pro ?
I want increase the quality of my footages with ultrawide on iphone 11 pro max
Yes especially in lower light, but it’s also sharper. The Moment 14mm is even wider and closer to the Ultra Wide... bit.ly/GetMoment14mm
How is it with image quality? Obviously, I want to get as much as possible into my shot so I would go for the fish one. But what if I zoom in? Is the quality going to be worse then with the wide one? I assume so...
Distortion would be worse, but otherwise they’re both quality glass.
I would like to see this with the Moment app
Did you use their app to de-squeeze? I have no problems with mine
No, used Filmic Pro.
iPhoneographers try using the momentum app. See how the results come out.
We have it and have played with it. Like it. The main problem on the video side is don’t see a way to use high bit rates. Also of course there’s no flat or log gamma profiles. But for casual use seems pretty nice. Like the UI.
iPhoneographers you should email these to them as suggests for their app. They are pretty good at taking feedback.
@@iphoneographers Really no flat, no bitrates modifications possible on moment app today ???
Should’ve seen this video before buying all 3 of them.
So, is it worth it? All three of them are useful, or single wide angle lens is just enough?
Никита Микуцкий When I was traveling, I ended up reaching for the wide angle lens mostly probably because I went taking a lot of photos more than video. It really depends on what you want. I barely used my fisheye tho. I used iphone’s native camera app and I was always in a rush so i dont really have time to configure things in the moment app. I dig the moment lens wide in a minimal setup for travel, very versatile.
@@yonyon18 thanks for answering)
I know this is older now, but one thing I noticed is the lens on your iphone 8 plus looks horrible wondering if that tainted the results here.
Not sure. The anamorphic has a slightly warm tint to it. These lenses have been in use and worked well for several years.
How do you use. wide angle lens using just iphone
You can attach the lenses to the iPhone (standard) Wide lens or the Tele lens mount. For these tests we used the standard Wide as the baseline look and for the lens mount.
iPhoneographers how do you use standard wide tele lens that comes with iphone
Not sure exactly what you mean... But, the iPhone 8 Plus has two built-in lenses - a wide (which is the default standard lens) and a telephoto. So you select which lens you want to use in Filmic Pro... is that what you’re referring to?
iPhoneographers yes sir how use built in wide/tele with filmic pro have any tutorials is this good option don’t have budget get external wide/tele lenses
Have you use DJI OSMO 2 and Zhiyun smooth 4 if so which one you recommend
hEY please , Review moment 58mm lens
We are planning to do that! 👍🏻
@@iphoneographers also compare it with the 60mm tele , btw love ur videos even though i have pixel 2 but still learn so much out of your content
Thanks! Glad to hear.
We have the 60mm and are getting the 58mm.
No Tele lens?
add 58mm to the test pls
thx for review
Covered it too th-cam.com/video/3D8ysxjz2Vs/w-d-xo.html
I like to think the star of this video is the bear and the bear obviously adores the attention given.
Why didn't you show us the bokeh it would give? In the next comparison video between Moment and Moondoglabs, please change the focus and show us the bokeh only. We would love to see how it compares.
This was a FOV and distortion test. There’s no shallow depth-of-field shooting wide like this. We show some bokeh in our First Look video... th-cam.com/video/joK59f68tiY/w-d-xo.html. And will also show some in the Moondog vs. Moment comparison video. 👍🏻 Thanks for watching!
part of the the appeal of anamorphic is the distortion
Yes, agreed. Wider lenses for sure. But some people don’t like it. We just wish the bokeh on these was vertically stretched like on traditional anamorphics. Thanks for watching!
still waiting my anamorphic lens... :)
Yeah but, how does the Moment anamorphic lens compares to Moondogs new 12.5 mm anamorphic lens? That's a video I would like to see, because I'm not sure if there is a difference between the original and the new Moondog lens. On your example, the Moment wide lens is the best.
We don’t know either. 😃 Haven’t used the new one. The original Moondog is very good though.
I think the new model from moondogs was to compete with moments. Just look at the design.
Could be! Ease of use is pretty nice.
hi guys! very interesting comparison!
I already have tele and wide moment lens and I was thinking about purchasing the new anamorphic ones. However, I see in the video that the width of anamorphic and wide ones is very similar, so I guess that buying the anamorphic lens is probably not worth it. What do you think? Maybe I should look for the superfish instead.
Additionally, do you know any app to crop photos with the anamorphic rate, in order to get an anamorphic photo from a wide shot?
Thank you!
You might watch this video we made... Shoot ANAMORPHIC or Just Letterbox? th-cam.com/video/IZR3cvCjQ2k/w-d-xo.html
The anamorphic is a different look and of course aspect ratio. Really depends on what you’re shooting.
As far as cropping... Do you mean iOS app or for laptop/desktop? You can’t get real anamorphic by just cropping... it’s actually a squeezed widescreen image. But you can do a “scope” look (similar to letterbox), which is 2.39:1 to fake it. Not sure if that’s what you mean or not.
Thanks for watching!
Hey! Thank your for your quick response. It is just the comparison I was looking for, great work mates! ;) I understand it now and appreciate the differences.
I asked about iOS app. For the moment, until I order the anamorphic lenses I am cropping photos with PicsArt app. I take photos with the wide lens, then cropping with 2390 x 1000 ratio and finally I add the letterbox in the same app. Of course it is not the same effect, but you can get a great result as well.
Thank you!
Am I wrong to think that the distortion caused by anamorphic lenses is part of their appeal to begin with? Many of the classic movies that used anamorphic lenses show clear distortion in many of the shots...
You’re not wrong as lots of modern wide anamorphics from Cooke etc do have barrel distortion. But when thinking of classic films like spaghetti westerns from the 1960s most think of the oval bokeh (vertically stretched) look, not barrel distortion per se. Or a film like Die Hard is a good example.
And many anamorphic adapters today for regular spherical lenses require a telephoto to work properly, so you see no distortion there - just oval bokeh and flares. Should note too that a 1.33x squeeze is not really going to create oval looking bokeh - really need a 2x to do that.
I mean 0.24 , I don't know if you always use smudged lens glasses but not very smart
Why in the world wouldn't you use the moment app? Its specifically designed to use with the lens.
Three reasons. First, it’s Pro version wasn’t around when we did this video. Second, it’s not designed to use with any lens, it just desqueezes anamorphic like Filmic Pro (or ProMovie, etc). And lastly, it’s very much a work-in-progress that is buggy.
iPhoneographers I don't know that I agree with those last two statements. It does allow you to select the lens you are using and it help to get the most out of that lens, at least it has for me. The moment app, right now, is by far one of my favorite mobile apps for picts. I haven't found it buggy at all. Maybe they have dialed it in since I started using it and I use the ios app, can't speak to Android.
The lens selection does nothing except for the anamorphic, which it desqueezes. Otherwise if you select it all it does is add metadata so you can look back later to know what lens you used, which is cool, but doesn’t do anything visually to the shot.
And the app has been pretty buggy on iOS, and as a matter of fact was even pulled from the App Store recently after everyone was getting black screens. It seems to be doing ok now, which is good, but they’ve had consistent issues with video settings. We’re fans of Moment - especially their lenses - and so we want their app to be good.
IPHONEOGRAPHERS ARE AWESOME! Their tips for iPhone filmmaking have really helped me, because that's what I film on now. I've even created a filmmaking channel where I talk about all things filmmaking. I'd love some support and feedback!!!!
nice!! ill go do that!
ill go check it out
thanks!
Hey thanks! Very cool. Will def check it out. 👍🏻
Where's the overlay comparison? Although both 'wide' and 'anamorphic' have similar width, the center area size will be different. I mean the subject in this test, our 🐻 director looks smaller in the 'wide' shots, compared to the same width 'anamorphic.'
A test in which you overlay these images may help to visualize the same.
Please do that and post as a status update. Thanks.
Yeah, the center is different between the wide and the anamorphic, but not by that much as demonstrated with the wipes between the two shots. We’re going to do a blog post on our website with the details of the lenses and could possibly include overlays.
@@iphoneographers thanks for listening :) and thanks for the new comparison video with overlays.
Sure thing! Thanks for the input. 👍🏻
i notice the difference.. the Fedex truck is missing XD
I've been pretty disappointed with the moment lenses, the anamorphic blur just doesn't work well on phone sensors
So. It's better to use the wide, and then use two black strips....
If you just want a letterbox look within a 16x9 video, then maybe. But if you want true 2.39:1 widescreen and anamorphic flares then, no.
Tanks Tanks Tanks.
Already purchased, it still takes a long wait to get to China!
Someone watches the muppets lo
the paradox of choice. ughhhhhh
667. you're welcome
Hope moondogs win when do comparison
Moment case = overheat
Moondog lens no need case - its great for hot iphone7+
Definitely advantages & disadvantages to both. We have the 37mm threaded Moondog so it requires a rig to use.
Why would it overheat with a case? Never heard anything about that before. I always had a case on my iPhone’s, never a problem with heat. Sounds silly
It depends on what you're recording. 4K footage will definitely stress your phone, specially if you do 4k @60fps.
First!
the do not honor their product warranty and their phone case product is crap. The lens mount tabs are brittle, thin and very weak. Mine snapped off, so now the lens is useless...
😂 normal camera is best
Safe to say. I should’ve just gotten an iPhone 8 Plus. The wide lens looks amazing lol.
