  • Beautiful spring day! We survived the cruel shanghai winter! Finally! We took some time today to visit the (almost) new Shanghai Natural History Museum. This building was designed by American firm Perkins and Will.
Whats special about this place, is that it was placed inside the Jingan Sculpture Park. And the architects did some great efforts to make it fit right in. The museum is an extension of the park, with a large sweep of green going all the way up to the roof! Unfortunately this part is not accesible for the visitors… :( bummer!
Also, to make its less an obstacle the biggest part of this museum was placed under ground. With the help of a large void light is brought in to the lower levels. Quite smart!
This is our exploration. Please let us know what you think in the comments!!
    Have a great week ahead!

Hey Poncho! Thanks for your comment.Great that you are trying to keep a record of the things you are learning along the way. This is very important. And of course sharing this knowledge is even better. Thats also the aim we have with #donotsettle. Always share our knowledge. Good luck and safe travels!

Hey, you mentioned that the most beautiful part of this building (for me) is not able to be seen by visitors - "so China". Why is that so? Why it is forbidden for tourists to see this part? If I understand well XD BTW, lovely video :)

Well, they are especially concerned about safety here, also everything in China draws big crowds. So big crowds on a sloped roof might not be such a good idea...

Thanks for making this video. My wife and i will be going to Shanghai in August and we will certainly stop by this museum. Too bad the roof in inaccessible...i'd expect that in the US, but i thought China was a bit more "willing". I've previously seen places in Hangzhou without railings that would never fly in the US. I'm surprised this was so restrictive. I guess codes are codes...gotta protect the public.

You are welcome! Definitely have a look at this museum! If the architecture isn't your main interest, there is nice exhibition inside. So definitely worth a visit! We think it also has to do with overcrowding, wherever you go there are huge amount of people.... not so ideal on a sloped roof if you ask us.

You are probably right about the excessive live loads on the roof due to overcrowding. Quick question, any recommendations on a hotel to stay at in Shanghai?
