My mom passed away tonight. She was 98. This was her favorite song. We played this song on our phone, put it next to her ear, she took a deep breath and then she was gone. I know that she felt safe and at peace.

@@strigonshitposting793 I've heard that when people have age-related memory loss, music is the last thing they forget. That's how Glen Campbell was able to do a final tour even though he'd been diagnosed with Alzheimer's: even if he didn't know where he was, he remembered all his old songs. When I interviewed (as a journalist) a staff member for a treatment center for Alzheimer's patients, they asked me to give them some tapes of big-band music because that's what their people remembered and wanted to hear. Of course I was happy to comply!

The first time I heard this I was sitting in my grandfather's lap as a little boy of four. My grandfather was a veteran of the Pacific Campaign during World War II born in 1922. We used to solve crossword puzzles together and that was always our thing. I'm now in my 30's. Hearing this always harkens back to some of my earliest memories of my grandfather. He was a skilled carpenter and machinist in particular but understood all trades. He sadly passed away due to injuries he sustained in a car accident in 1998 when I was 9 years old. To me, he typifies the Greatest Generation who fought to end fascism and forge a better world that we enjoy today. RIP Perry Howe

My parents loved all of the big bands from the 1940s. It certainly was the "greatest generation". I hope more and more younger people realize the huge sacrifices that men and women have made over the years to protect our freedom.

I was 5 years old. In 1949 I was flying with my parents from Yokohama to Southampton in a Sunderland Empress Flying Boat. We stopped at many ports including Hong Kong. My parents were hosted at the Peak. There was a party with music. I was already in bed but I sneaked out to the corridor and looked down at the dancing guests. My parents were in each others arms moving together to the music. They looked happy. This made me feel happy and safe. Later I would learn that the music was by Glenn Miller and my mum and dad were dancing to this tune.

Someone else here said, "Makes me nostalgic for a time I wasn't even born in." I agree. When this song was popular America was at war and each moment was precious because it might be your last ones. Americans had survived the Great Depression and when it was finally winding down, they found themselves in a new, world war. That generation had mighty stuggles but they overcame them thru a firm resolve in themselves and their way of life. I hear this melody and I think about brave American men and women and I thank God for them. I wish we had such men and women now.

My Dad did that too in PA -- they would go to various ballrooms around southeast of PA and see all the big bands; it would get so crowded they would not dance, but just stand there and listen. Dad had his own little big band club in the Army when he was overseas in WW2. Anytime I hear Glenn Miller I think of my Dad and I hope there is plenty of Glenn Miller music in heaven -- if so he will be in paradise. In a little outfit newsletter it said that if anyone liked jazz they could come to their meetings but that they DID favor Bing Crosby over that new kid Frank Sinatra. To them, Bing's crooning went with this music.

We were a bit nervous but as the opening chords played you could see everyone was smiling - perfect send off to a WWII veteran and a sadly missed Mum. They had to play it twice and as it ended the second time I was standing with my hand on her coffin crying and wishing her a final goodbye. She was three weeks short of her 100th birthday. This Glenn Miller song “Moonlight Serenade” was one of my Mom’s favorite songs.
She Loved Big Band music as a child in the 30’s and a teen ager during WWII.
She and my Dad would listen to Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa, Woody Herman, Spike Jones, The Dorsey Brothers Big Band, Buddy Rich and of course Glenn Miller.
    She’s the reason I’m a drummer.
I had this tune playing for my Mom & Dad on their 53rd wedding anniversary.
My dear Dad passed in 2006.
Last Wednesday June 5 in the early morning at 2:53 my dear sweet Mom went home to be with Christ Jesus and reunite with my Dad.
I so wish I could have played Glenn Miller’s “Moonlight Serenade” one more time for her.
    She loved it so.

Now I want to hunt up a full orchestration just for another fun listen. It is also fun to listen to George Gershwin himself play Rhapsody in Blue. Gives it extra meaning.

I'm 21. Last night the Glenn Miller Orchestra was in town. This isn't the kind of music I usually listen to but I figured why not, I'll lend them an ear. They played this song towards the end of the night. There was one couple in front that got up and danced to the music.
I had been having a painful, stressful week. And that moment, with the lights dimmed, this wonderfully soft tune being played live, and the one brave couple dancing in front of a whole theater. It was perfect. All was right with the world. I wanted to say thank you to Glenn Miller, the folks keeping his orchestra alive today, and to the lovely couple dancing last night. I have a new respect for this era of music. You made my week much better than it was before.

My mother passed away on 19th March 2011. We had this to start her funeral. Still can remember how i felt as i walked into the crematorium, it was like lawnmower blades turning in my throat, together with a massive lump. And that was as i heard this erstwhile tune.

Thanks to my parents, I enjoy Glenn Miller and many others from his time period.
Listening to this always brings back memories of them dancing together at family gatherings.
When I entered my teens, I was allowed to have parties in our basement party room.
Countless times I would play this tune and watch my friends dance with my parents who took great pleasure in teaching us young guns their dance moves.
    It was simply wonderful.

This song takes me back to the magical atmospheres of when we went to my grandfather's house, who always listened to it and who, welcoming us with his smile, made us love even more this musical background that even today, when I am practically alone in the world, does not abandon me.
