UPDATE: I had a user known as @GameswithIsaac reach out to me and let me know what the other 2 pictures were! After looking through the game's files, one was of an owl statue and the other was the enemy similar to a "beamos" that spins and fires lasers. Both of these are found in dungeons, with the latter being exclusive to those locations. Even more proof for this theory!

I think the ghost should have been Marin's LATE MOTHER! The name? Martha of course. The 2 bumps on top of the ghost's head suggest that 'she' wore 'her' hair in buns while alive. As far as what Ulrira tells Link over the phone, probably a slip of the tongue or confused as to 'Which Ghost?' Link refers to, what with the main Graveyard being mobbed with ghosts.

The "he" and "him" when the ghost is referred to by people in the game can't be used as evidence of anything unless the translators were either told by the Japanese story writer that the ghost was a male, or if it was referred to as such in the Japanese text. A lot of times these kind of things are left ambiguous in Japanese text, so it would be interesting to know if this was the case here. I. E, you should try to find that text for those interactions in the Japanese version and add it to this video in an update.

I had a similar theory. Although it was that the Ghost was actually a hero like Link. Eventually he learned that Koholint was a dream and, instead of continuing to wake the Wind Fish, he decided to return the instruments to the dungeons. He ended up dying in the Angler's Tunnel.
Something that supports this is that at the beginning of the game, the Owl tells Link that the monsters began wreaking havoc as soon as he washed ashore. One reason they would do this is if they already knew that an adventurer that showed up would attempt to wake the Wind Fish. They knew this because it has happened before.

Here's an interesting question. How did Link get stuck in the dream?
We don't know as far as I am aware, so surely this could happen to someone else.
Perhaps the Ghost was someone who got trapped before Link.
No real evidence behind this, but it's interesting to consider.

    • @darkIkarus
      @darkIkarus 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I think it's Link's dream for the Windfish only being within it because he saw it before or as some kind of premonition what he might see when he wakes up. Link was knocked out on the sea when lightning stroke and the events in the game are his fight against dying within a koma.

      Annoying Bokoblin
Well...someone had to leave behind the relief in the Southern Shrine, and the cryptic owl statues that either hint about the island’s nature (or the location of seashells and Fairy Trees to ram).
Who created the Keys to the Labyrinths, many of which are scattered in almost the opposite direction of the locations they unlock, or behind cryptic clues or fetch quests or other traps? (Richard doesn’t seem to be aware of what he’s holding, only that it’s “worth enough to barter”)
I kinda like the idea that Ghostie learned the truth about Koholint and became filled with so much regret that even after putting everything back/scattering it that they doomed themselves into becoming a Wandering Spirit, unable to rest until the next Waker allegedly came and abandoned the quest as well.
      (Only, Link kinda lied.)

My theory is that the Ghost is someone who also came from the "real world", and died on the island.
Everyone who is actually part of the island is actually (age) immortal, as they are essentially merely fictional beings imagined to life by the dreamers.
The cemetery isn't an actual cemetery in terms of having previous generations of islanders buried there, it was merely dreamt up by the windfish as-is, and there never really had to be anyone added to it, since nobody on the island dies
So when the adventurer from outside die( either in the dungeon or eventually from old age), their grave was outside the cemetery, because the cemetery isn't actually used as one, it is just one of the "themed" areas of the island because of the windfish's way of dreaming up the island.

Since Koholint is a dream maybe the ghost is a creation of the Wind Fish or Link himself as a warning, to avoid a terrible fate, or a creation of Link's mind as an expression of a subconscious fear to die in his quest. If we go in this direction the fact you need to go with the ghost to his home before resting in peace, could be a reminder to Link that as pleasing the island could be, he must come back home (to Hyrule) for being able to find peace (aswell as a reminder of the danger of the island).

I don't "just like it", it is also actually true. I can't just understand how everyone still misses the fact, that this dream feels like an everlasting quest, because Link is in an ACTUAL COMA, IN THE MIDDLE OF A FREAKING OCEAN. Hence what the story is all about waking his conciousness (the windfish) to stay alive. The monster, the nightmares also btw represent links depressive/fearing thoughts of being unable to wake up on his own. The nightmares literally tell him to just give up and to stick to his feelings. They're also, unlikely all other bosses, actual challenges, but rather just exist to blatantly wasting time. Since the more time link would've had, the mightier they would seem (shout outs to my fellows who suffer from depressive disorder as well).
I just love how absurdly deep and far ahead of his time this whole game is and especially was back then when the originals where released. Since it actually managed to cover serious mental illnesses and sell it through a children's game. When I discovered the fact back then, my mind literally exploded how well it was written. That's also one of the reasons, why it was, is, and always will be my most favorite game ever existed. I just can't find any other game which doesn't only breaks the first 4 walls, but also any further wall as well. This game is imo immensely underrated and a true masterpiece without being one. It actually formed my whole childhood (at least what one would call it) and also helped me to get over some personal issues as with traumatic events.

@@asmylia9880 while yes link definitely heavily influenced the dream in various ways the fact that the end scene [post wake up] includes the wind-fish flying overhead proves that it was a real entity [and this series wouldn't throw that in if they wanted us to assume the wind-fish wasn't]. Also for curiosity's sake could you explain how the nightmares reflect Link's fears? I get the last one could be like an amalgamation of every major threat and the idea of them overwhelming him.

    • @ShadowSkyX
      @ShadowSkyX 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think what didn't age well was the item management/menu. The buttons - or lack thereof - really shows how bad it is to today's basic standard. I noticed the remake still semi operates on the square by square spaces, it just largely lacks the transitions. I first noticed it in that field of grass next to Marin and Tarin's house, the pieces would regrow when you would technically walk out of the tiled space that filled the screen the grass and bushes in the original/DX version. In the remake the further you would walk away, more rows would grow back. I noticed things like that in other areas but this was the earliest and most notable right off. It's the same with Martin's singing: as soon as you exited that effective square, her voice would fade away almost immediately.

I wonder if the ghost was trapped inside the Anglerfish after being eaten. It would explain why they only appear after the boss is killed, he was trapped inside it. If he was killed then eaten and the Anglerfish coughed up his bones at a much later point in time after the rest of the body was digested then that would explain why he was trapped inside the boss if my idea is true.

I'm pretty sure in the original, you get the "curse" message if you sprinkle the powder on the grave before you do the ghost quest - likely a programming oversight, but I remember randomly sprinkling the powder on the grave before I even saw the ghost, and getting that message.

I thought of a twist to this theory, the nightmare monsters aren't really harmful to inhabitants of the island as they just want to live but become hostile to those to try to interfere with those who wake the wind fish. It also stands to reason that the inhabitants know the island really well as they go around it with little to no problems... What if the ghost was someone who was sucked into the wind fishes dream and also tasked to wake up the wind fish but ultimately failed in this quest. The Map would show they were unfamiliar with the island and if they were killed by the nightmare it would show that they were hostile like they are with Link. The outside grave could also point at them not viewing him as one of them but still wanting to show their respects to his passing

This makes sense, except for one small detail that was seemingly overlooked. It seems implied in the video that the death was recent, but if it was recent, and the house was recently abandoned, then why would it look so old and broken down? There's rotting wood and caved in ceilings, as well as cracked floor tiles showing that standing on them will result in them crumbling. Just something I noticed and didn't feel like it quite added up with this theory.

Wouldn’t the spirit be named Martha? It looks like it has two buns on its head, like a young girl would wear. I think that the ghost is Martha. The villagers didn’t find her body, and named the bay in rememberance of her. Perhaps she was slain trying to protect the village? Maybe one of the bosses we fought had taken her life? It’s a long shot.. but what if Martha’s bay is named after the only woman who lived there?

Oof, killed by the saddest, easiest boss in the game. That's rough buddy.
A slightly more outlandish theory could be that he died in Tail Cave, considering the hung remains below the Moldorm's room. It is closer to the traveler's home, and nothing indicates that said traveler had flippers or could swim. The ear buds are interesting as they might suggest that said traveler wasn't human, maybe a way to represent ears or horns of a member of animal village. Not saying my theory's better, it isn't, but it could be a possible alternative.

That’s a really good theory. I’m not into doing TH-cam videos so I’ll post mine here and see what you think.
I think the ghost (regardless of the manga name) is actually Link. Well his subconscious. In links awakening we’re not actually inside the wind fish’s dream, it’s Link’s.
This Link is the same one from LttP according to Hyrule historia and the ghost’s house set-up looks very like Link’s house from LttP. Even with the dungeon pics and items. So I basically think that the ghost is Link’s sub…or sub-subconscious is just trying to backtrack to his house in hyrule. And the ways dreams work, the house in Link’s Awakenkng is just a version Link’s house in LttP.
    Or maybe not idk.

  • @francoperalta5986

Since there are familiar people and characters from links waking life in this game, what if that ghost is a dead alternate version of Link, who chose to take the red tunic from the color dungeon (thus lacked the protective color of blue) , died while fighting that angler fish, and also is the reason why the flowers are pink (since pink is essentially a diluted version of red and water dilutes)? This would explain why the ghost is a he and also why the specific color of the flowers, as well as the ghost even having a sword to give to link. Even the room setup almost identically matches the setup of Link's house in A Link to the Past

I always thought the ghost could be Prince Richard's sister or girlfriend who fled from Kanalet Castle when the monsters overtook it. My theory is the five golden leaves could have been keepsakes or even some sort of proposal Richard was preparing for the ghost. Unfortunately she was killed during the escape from the castle, and Richard had her buried away from the graveyard to set her apart from the commoners. As for the frogs in his villa, they're there to comfort him in the loss of his beloved. Therapeutic animals.
The ghost never says anything about Richard, but she wants to see her old house where they might have first met only to relive that nostalgia. She doesn't necessarily want to come face to face with Richard because she either doesn't want to, or is afraid of him seeing her like this. Once she relives her nostalgia in the seaside shack, she's ready to move on.
