- I never thought I'd be a widow at thirty-four. But here I am, Dakota Mitchell, sitting at my kitchen table at 7 AM, trying to get my seven-year-old son ready for school while fighting back tears. It's been eight months since the accident at the construction site took Mark from us, but sometimes it feels like yesterday...
Incredibly moving stories of human relationships, divorce, revenge. No reddit style story will leave you indifferent.

You stood up for your son and exposed the double standard. That is parenting done right. Absolute respect 💪🎄🔥
Children learn by asking questions. I’m used to children asking questions. To me it means they want to learn as much as possible.
OMG, I kept hollering Hell No through this story.. You have no husband so nobody else's income to help out with bills and savings. What a absolute horrible excuse for a family!! Who has family Christmas Eve at home with no children?? What is the saddest thing of all; is you lost your husband and your son lost his father, and these AHs are trying to use you as a ATM.. You should have took those Christmas gifts with you as you left though: they didn't deserve even so much as a candle..
I heard one child ask his dad ~why was his head on a baseball?~
That was Barron Trump.
Asking questions is great, but not all questions come from curiosity. Some kids just ask nonstop without listening to the answers, and that’s exhausting 😅🤯
You should have either kept the gifts or given them back.
I'm glad that Dakota has other family members who truly love her and Tommy. I'm super happy that she is still close to her in-laws.
The first Christmas without husband and father and they want you to leave your son? Er, no. I wouldn't even go. Sorry I need to be with my son.
Absolutely! Expecting Dakota to leave her son behind, especially during his first Christmas without his dad, was unbelievably selfish. Family should come together in tough times, not create more pain.
A child that does not have his head down staring at a I phone screen but asks questions and engages in conversations is an intelligent child as opposed to the brain dead child whose parents have used technology as a abusive babysitter
Exactly! Tommy’s curiosity shows his intelligence and eagerness to learn. It’s sad how some people overlook that and favor kids who are just quietly glued to screens. A child’s questions should be embraced, not criticized.
A beautiful and sad story.a young widow and a little boy who didn't have a dad anymore.how heartless can some people be
Most don’t realize that money makes strange bedfellows. People get really greedy when there is money is available for them by you.
Greedy parents, sue them to get YOUR MONEY back!
Tell all of them the truth that Tommy was NOT INVITED to the party and just walk out.
Which she did.
She shouldn't have left behind the Christmas gifts 📦 her mother demanded, she should have rather taken them with her and given them to a CHARITY instead
That is so sick profiting off of a daughter's dead husband's money is considered blood money to me
She can help her son with that money it's hard out
I don't understand why they took it out on the child, especially since he was just asking questions. That can be annoying sometimes, but it's what every kid does
THAT CHILD WILL BE SOMEONE SOMEDAY
HIS PARENTS ARE HOLDING HIM BACK ! THEY GET MAD
BECAUSE THEY AREN'T
SMART ENOUGH TO ANSWER
HIS QUESTIONS.
They were sh*ty parents and even sh*tier grandparents. Children that age ask questions. That's how they learn - in the beginning - before they learn to read and discover things for themselves. GOOD parents, grandparents and teachers encourage that.
The grandparents are from the very old “children should be seen, but not heard” days.
Right? Kids are naturally curious-that’s how they learn about the world. Targeting Tommy for simply being a child speaks volumes about the family’s priorities. Thankfully, Dakota saw through it and protected her son.
Get out of there right now. That makes me so angry I’d be getting out and now. No presents left. Nothing. Get out now. Excluding your child who lost his father is one of the most hateful things I can think of.
I definitely would not have been leaving the presents by the door when I left. 😅
Bravo Dakota. I just wish you did refuse to give the one thousand dollars earlier.
You did the right thing cutting off communication with your family.
would have not been so dramatic if just walking out, telling them no more money adds to the drama !
She’s a widow. She shouldn’t give them anything. It’s harder when you’re a widow. I’m a widow. I have a harder time with no husband. No kids on Christmas Eve then no daughter. Christmas I spend with my child. He has no dad.
I knew when "Rachel" volunteered the $500/month that she was lying and that their parents wouldn't see a dime from her! Plus, one less child than Rachel should not have meant that Dakota had to pay double. Rachel's children had two parents to look after them and take care of their needs. Tommy only had the one parent now. So, if all things were equal, both daughters would have been giving their parents the same amount.
I completely agree. Cutting ties with toxic family was the healthiest choice, and the financial manipulation was heartbreaking. Dakota showed incredible strength by finally standing up for herself and her son
Next step should be to Sue your parents for the money they scammed from you
"you cut my son off, now i cut you off" then follow thru. No contact, no money, and consider legal advice on suing donors for money obtained under false pretences.
It's none of their business what she does with the monies.
And if she had "given" them a loan of any the money, she would never get it back. They would keep asking for more and more until it was all gone. And then in 15 years or so when Tommy is graduating HS and is ready for college, nobody has any money and Dakota and Tommy would just have to find a way to pay for his college by themselves because they for damn sure wouldn't be able to count on her parents for a dime! Meanwhile, they would have taken out second mortgages and done anything they could for Rachel and her children.
Great job op 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽💯 handled perfectly and divorce imminent with sister 🙎🏽♀️🙎🏽
Grandma wants grandson to be a sheep and not have thoughts and questions. Sad.
And the old electronics ploy worked just fine for Rachel's kids, but not with Tommy. Inquiring minds want to KNOW, not just play electric games.
Its very funny as our grandson at this age was curious about things and more about outdoor activities
How cruel parents could be!
This story is a rollercoaster! The manipulation and favoritism are shocking, but the way you navigated it all with such grace and determination is incredible. It really highlights how 'family' isn't just about blood, but about genuine love and support.
You don’t think this is made up
You should've kept the gifts or returned them.
Tommy…happy unloved?HAPPY AND LOVED…
I wouldn't give them anything them are just using you. Focus on your son and not your selfish family!!!
I
😅
Lavish weddings doesn't secure your future.
$300000 insurance payout does not seem much. We had much more substantial amounts of life insurance. plus the mortgage would be paid off on the death as well.
It doesn't go very far anymore
It raises a kid in my country...including university. But only just.
(Oh, the EU does not have very high tuition prices and no pay money for schools)
Only if it’s invested and not touched for years is $300K a lot.
Excellent story❤
Good for her.
You should have taken the presents with you.
I'm not sending you money when you didn't even like me or my child
Great story. 👍👍
She should have declined het mother's inbitation and spent Christmas with her in laws who were always there for her. She was wrong to go where her son was not wanted.
And she was too stupid to tell her aunts and uncles the truth when they first asked? What a spineless jellyfish!!
Be honest telling everyone the exact reason your son isn’t welcome on X-mas eve.
She did. It’s the climax of the story.
@@crazycatlady6396 Yep, but lazy me types my comments when they happen in the story. Sometimes I go back and update my comments when the story is complete. Obviously I didn’t update the comment this time. Sincerely, I apologize. I understand that many people reading the apology immediately think, “wow, has thin skin, huh? Meds kicking in, Nite all.
You don't help with Tommy, I will take money from you! I will send the money to my in laws instead of you!😂🎉🎉😂
My voice sharper than I intended….that is actually untrue…subconsciously, our eyes and voice display our emotional state…outside influences trigger our emotional responses…the sharp voice…was a proportional response…it was an automatic response ..raw and real…
Big mistake telling.parents the insurance payout amount
I would have grabbed the bag of gifts on my way out.
Me, too.
Actually, she should have held the bag of gifts up so everyone was aware that she brought them...and then told everyone that she hoped that they enjoyed the gifts from her and Tommy. Glad that the rest of the family had the integrity to leave the party after her and that they made a point of including her and Tommy in future family events at their homes.
Sounds really stupid to keep giving a Thousand dollars a month to people who are never available to help you watch your son so that you can work and earn the money to give to them!
Exactly!
When I was a 5, 1961, my stay at home mother worked a waitress job to help pay for my father’s parents’ new pump. They didn’t want to help babysit and only would if they got paid. My father was the oldest and went to college so they felt it was their due. I never loved them as much as my mom’s side. Kids know when they aren’t loved.
Why is Dakota going to give her parents $1,000 just because Rachel said to do so?
Yep
Good decision to expose them and exclude them. I knew Rachel was lying.
I thought that Rachel wouldn't be sending any money. She didn't! Karma's going to have fun with mom, dad and Rachel.
It seems Dakota's REAL family are her in-laws. Besides, instead of telling Tommy to be quiet, they're interested in what he's doing.
Good story
Money to parents should have been going towards daycare/babysitting though Tommy’s no baby, but the care is the same…for some teenage neighbor to earn some money for whatever she wants to spend it on…
I agree about the babysitting. My Spanish grandparents were horrified at the idea of taking money for babysitting their grandchildren. But our German neighbors always asked why they wouldn't make us pay for babysitting. Different cultures, different views. There were many other ways to show our appreciation 🙂
She should have taken the gifts!
who are never available to help you watch your son so that you can work and earn the money to give to them!
The money is hers to use as she desires 😮
Dakota didn't have to tell parents about her money😮
My deepest condolences, your children are deserving of love and ignore anyone who doesn't love them should be excluded your parents are toxic so please don't worry about telling them live by their own means
If this is a real story then I'm so sorry for your loss. Don't ever leave your child behind if your child is not invited then don't go.
NO is a complete sentence
First all, never support anyone ... Always tell them to support themselves
A CHILD THAT ASKS QUESTIONS ! IS A SMART CHILD ! DONT EVER GIVE THEM A DIME. OF YOU &. YOUR SONS. MONEY 💴. FROM HIS FATHERS. DEATH
Why would she even go after her mom said that?
It’s hard when family gatherings bring up these kinds of issues. It’s important for parents to be considerate and understanding of each other’s feelings, especially when it comes to children. Everyone should feel included and valued. I hope the situation improves and that everyone can find a way to come together for future events
One thing my mother taught me, that was actually useful, if someone wants something from you blame someone else who isn’t there, with a reason why you can't do it.
Normally it was to get rid of salespeople or religious people trying to convert you. I was told to blame the missing person.
In this case she could use her in-laws with some kind of made up excuse, e.g., roof needs to be replaced.
Dakota walked into that "adults-only" Christmas party and saw all the other kids there-absolutely brutal. That level of betrayal from her own parents is unreal. Glad she stood up for herself and her son!
Nice story of the righting of wrongs ❤- very well narrated 👍
Don't Dakota's parents know that intelligent children ask a lot of questions?
Dakota did the right thing exposing what her parents did to Tommy. Children need to ask questions in order to understand how the world around them works. Decent people won't mind answering their questions and giving simple explanations that the child will be able to understand. It makes them into rounded individuals as they grow up.
Great story ❤❤❤
If everything is so expensive then don't have a crowd over for dinner. Let each be responsible for feeding themselves and their own families.
Every time they didn’t help, I’d cut $100 off the money, because I “had to pay for help”
Him asking questions shows how intelligent he is.
I would cancel the money when the mother no longer helped picking up Tommy.
My dad felt if my children cant attend neither would he..i feel no pitty for this lady.. the moment they refused their own grandkid.. bye
I would not give anything to selfish people that exclude my son. DONE WITH THEM.
Like i said if her parents wer having financial problems its time to set up a budget
Make those parents give back every dollar they scammed. 😊
Let mom answer the questions.
Intelligent children ask questions.
Examine the parents Financials before sending any money.
Asking questions is sign of intelligence
It was truly heartbreaking to see how my parents excluded my son from the Christmas party while allowing my sister's three kids to attend. It really made me question the fairness of the situation. I understand there might be reasons, but it was a tough pill to swallow. It felt like my child was being treated differently, and I can't help but feel disappointed by the way things played out
The evil greedy parents wanted to manipulate her also for the insurance money. The greedy evil parents should have at least some money saved for the grandchildren including Tommy when they died, a little trust fund or something. Besides, as seniors, they get money from the SS, both of them. So greedy!
Watching from Bogalusa Louisiana awesome story
Okay you are giving away a thousand dollars away to your horrible parents. But they are of no help to that daughter. Stop being helpful to your ungreatful family especially because you were the only parent to leave your son out of the family celebrations at xmas. The mom is insane and a witch. The sisters children are not well behaved. Actions speak louder than words. Those parents are clueless.
Nice I love this.
These doormats and their sob stories. Amazing.
Curious about 70k views in 12 hrs
Great story, Thanks ❤
Every thing is expensive perhaps they should creat an budget 😮 just a thought
I would have walked out the minute the money was mentioned.
Sorry for your loss.
great story
Don’t pay them
pfft she should of told the relatives 'My mom told me it was an adult only party and not to bring my son' then I'd make my presence known to my mom then walk out the door and block her number.
OP knew better, and let her family play her like a violin anyway. I feel zero sympathy for people who see what's coming, and let it happen anyway.
“But I answered honestly” ??????? Level of stupidity needs you to go to a psychiatrist!
Sheesh yes! DO NOT DIVULGE DETAILS OF PERSONAL FINANCES!!!
@@susanp.collins7834 Doormats will tell any information, regardless of the sensitivity, that is demanded of them!
Too should be two. Again AI superiority.
i love this
Your sister isn't going to give them any money. It's just a scam. Wake up.
Good questions
"Are you truly sorry or is it that nobody is talking to you anymore?" That is not fair. They are sorry and they are trying to make things right. It doesn't matter if they are feeling pressure from everyone else, to whom they have to apologize as well, they are changing their attitude and their actions. That is all for which you can ask.. The fact they are standing at your front door apologizing is all the proof that you need that they are sincere. Asking for more than that is vindictive.
*Unbelievable double standards! They said no kids at Christmas-except for my sister’s three? The way this played out is absolutely jaw-dropping! You won’t believe the ending!*
When parents start asking questions about death benefits from insurance that you’re going to get, you know they want to put their hands in it, like for them mostly. Hide it all, and run like hell.
Why is it always favorite lasagna?
While it's understandable to feel hurt and betrayed, completely cutting off family without considering reconciliation might not be the healthiest approach. Sometimes, addressing issues directly and working through them can foster growth and healing for everyone involved. Family dynamics are complex, and forgiveness doesn’t always mean weakness.
Favoritism doesn't benefit anyone, not even the so-called favorite offspring.
She got.bullied.into.$1000 dollars a moonth..
Op is a chump 😅
Definitely a doormat!
HORSE MANURE!!!
No son? No me! No gifts!!!!
You dont owe your parents and sister ANYTHING
She is not a good parent to let her family push her like this. Bad grammer.
