Coconut Crabs, Robber Crabs, Green Sea Crabs, Moon Crabs and others are all semi terrestrial crabs that live in jungle/swamp/mangrove style environments. I think he was really modeled on a moon crab (aka halloween crab but they have a bunch of names) gecarcinus quadratus, which has red, purple and golden orange coloring.
This is a good point however the box itself says he is a king crab specifically, even though his crabmode does not even resemble your typical king crab. He is kinda a mess at first glance, reffering to both the toy and tv show, but when you give both the character and toy a chance I think both are equally interesting and fun. Hes one of if not my favorite characters in transformers and also 100% my favorite figure, very unique and innovative for its time.
I hope they can make him and Depth Charge in the Transformers Kingdom line. They would be a Voyager or Leader Class scale due to how big their size are in the Beast Wars show.
It'd be pretty neat to see what they could do with a new Generations figure of this guy considering that Kingdom now exists and they may (after kingdom) do the Transmetals, Fuzors, and Transmetals 2's, etc if they wanted too. Perhaps then, if Rampage does get like a Voyager or Leader class fig, the crab claws could be integrated instead of just hanging off the back and make him horrendously top heavy...
The pegs on the side actually do. I just got this figure and he does peg in on all of the holes. all you need to do is have it in the exact same way you have it just rotate it 180
I would buy that in a heartbeat. Rampage was one of my favorite characters. He's what happens if you crossed Frankenstein's Monster with Hannibal Lecter and Mr. Krabs.
Rampage's design always freaked me out on the show. I think it is the fact that most predecatons maintained significant beast elements in their robto mode (megatron's trex head blaster, waspinator's abdomen, tranattulas' claws) whereas rampage was just a big ordinary robot. It made him stand out in a weird way.
the story was his pod had scanned a Crab for his alt mode was done Upon landing and turned Transmetal at the same time with the Quantum Surge. But i think due to his size and that of the crab. the crab was Prolly a prehistoric Crab and it was prolly really huge compared to the ones we know of but his Robot form is larger so you have to give the writers some credit for being creative. Some of the Transformers are bigger dur to being Transmetal figures.
I always liked this guy and Inferno, both on the show and the toys. Would love to get both. And there are all types of crabs in the jungles all around the world. Crabs are highly common inverts all over the world - hell I will find sand crabs in my backyard in the summer time and I live in the middle of Indiana.
according to the story...the crew of the maximal ship was to dump protoform x aka rampage on a barren desolate planet where he couldn't hurt anyone or anything. and his pod did land on a huge pile of energon so my theory is that it enhanced the range of the pod's DNA scanner and that is how he got his crab form
That Rampage in robot mode requires a lot of support when standing and taking accurate poses. His back part are extremely heavy while the body appears too simple.
I think out of all the "vehicle" modes in the Transmetal line Rampage's worked the best because it actually looked somewhat like a tank. Waspinator's worked too because they tried to make it look like a fighter jet.
I actually had a bunch of the beast wars figures including the Depthcharge and Rampage double pack. This figure I would say is the messiest as I had Transmetal Optimus Primal when he tried to take in Primes spark and that figure had tendacy to get messy as well. Overall though I would give Rampage a 10/10 for awesomeness, but a 7.3 out a 10 for execution.
I’m intrigued… Never heard of nor saw this double pack you mention. Google search produces no leads either. Was this from another country or could you be mistaken?
Yeah its hard for him to stand with his crab legs, cuz he actually isnt supposed to hes supposed to rest on his belly and the legs just make it look like hes standing
clear coat?! That explains the flaking on my lower class predacons, great observation! I liked this figure I bought him twice; in 98 he was 20, recently he was 140. his robot mode has a few more variations you can do with the claws; retro rockets, bring them fwd to use as a means of attack (along with his other weapons. His kibble can be manipulated better too. I also stumbled on different tank variations, a stealth fighter/space cruiser, and an anti aircraft/cannon mode. Galva conductors?
Mine too. I had an ex-girlfriend who found one for me for my birthday (still in the original box) at a garage sale when we were dating. To this day I still think I should have married her.
Awesome review. I got this figure in 1998, I was not aware that he came with a small laser blaster. I must have accicentally thrown it away. Glad that I was not the only one!
I know these are some old videos, but I love seeing these videos on the beast wars line, they were some of my first transformers toys ever. And still to this day will remain some of my favorite toys I've ever had a child. I was a VERY proud owner of Rampage. But a stupid kid I'd end up losing some of his legs :( . But I still carry fond memories of this cybertronian Hannibal Lector!
I actually really like him in robot mode. he was like a frankenstein sort of character, so the fact that he has so much crab kibble hanging off of him doesn't bother me that much. he's kind of a monstrosity and imo its conveyed well like that.
I used to watch the Beast Wars show. One thing I never understood about Rampage is this, Megatron removed his spark and had a tendency to use it to torture him. Rampage's spark was supposed to be indestructible right? So why didn't Rampage ever just blast Megatron and take his spark back? Could it be that Rampage's spark wasn't as indestructible as we were led to believe and could be damaged by his own weapons?
Makes me think of the poor people who have transformers but think they're only simple car toys takes the term robots in disguise it bit literally there lol
NEW THEORY TIME!!! His stasis pod had been much more powerful than normal, so he could be contained, that thing was in orbit for a full season of the show, it passed over wherever king crabs live and it's ultra-powerful scanner scanned one, then it crashed
the claws do actually peg into the arms of the crab... in the video he said he doesn't like it or doesn't... i have the toy and they do, and it ends up with a bit more playing around with, but the tank tranks end up a little more flush and straight
It didn't have to be Transmetal at first. The quantum surge Transmetallized all the protoforms (why the protoforms that were formatted previously didn't get TMed I have no idea)
It had something to do with they were protected from the surge because they came online on the planet. Rampage wasn't online yet, though, so I guess that's why he was transmetalized.
I know I am commenting on an Old vid, but baltmatrix I would like to tell you that there is a large species of crab that actually live in the Jungle, they are land crabs and not ocean crabs. :P Rampage is one of those crabs. They aren't king crabs, and probably * if the show said what his morph was, and they used the term King crab* it most likely was used in order not to confuse kids. :) Hugs. sorry about commenting on an old vid. :P
I have this figure, but I don't have depthcharge, nor did I ever. And to my knowledge, mine did come in a box (though I was a kid at the time so I wasn't the one who bought it...)
This is one beastwars figure I still want to buy, I liked the figure ever since I saw him in the shelves and specially in the show. His robot mode is the weakest and I doubt I would ever pose him in that form. I would always have him in either crab or tank mode, most likely tank mode, I freaking loved that! and his gun is awsome, if I ever seeing somewhere Im definitly buying him

gun in his left arm = jaw becomes a crude site. his robot mode in the show, has this crab legs pointed to the sky, this figure didn't give you that option. I think it would have been cool if he would have been more of a hermit crab, with a removable shell that could be a shield of some kind
Ok, commenting on a old video but there are a lot of things you did wrong in the vehicle mode, I Love your Videos but saw you struggle with a few of these transformers modes. When you use the pegs you said didn't work for you The tank treads become flush and the treads work perfectly in getting the guns to spin. Otherwise great review. PS the missiles fit inside the crab claws and wasn't their a extra rifle in the claws? I have a near complete Beastwars collection and the Crab was based on a giant Jungle crab...
also, I think it's being picky about the colour scheme, really wanting to show that orange hazzard stripping off. The preview photo photo shows the official transformation with the claws pegged in propper and working(never had a problem with it as a teen) with the black sides facing inwards. The tread was also nice a snug at I recall. I'm sorry if it's obsessing, but this was one of my all time fav transformers
Best thing I can suggest doing with the crab arms in robot mode is to turn them into extra arms, but if they're as heavy as you say they are, that would ruin the balance so much that getting him to stand should unlock an achievement in this game called life.
I liked how his crab legs on the show made him look even more imposing than he already was, kinda bummed when I saw the toy didn't have all the legs on the shoulder pads.
I got both my Rampage and depth charge together for about 40 bucks. Just missing the missles, Although Rampage is missing a crabby leg, and his shotgun but over all I like the figure he's better then most figures. Depth Charge is missing the Missles however he is complete.
You did transform him wrong. I had to do digging to find my Rampage and get it out of its box to verify but all its orange bits are suppose to be on the outside and they snap tightly together against the claw. Something is wrong with your Rampage if it does not hold itself together in tank mode
You probably just need to shave the pegs or the peg holes because I've never had any problem pegging mine together and the claws hold really good with both pegs working
"Getting him to stand in crab mode is a bit of a challenge" he says while doing it with absolutely no problem.
he's just that guy
It could be pretty normal that he crashed in a jungle. Coconut crabs, one of the largest crabs in the world, are in more tropical areas.
Giant prehistoric coconut crabs are terrifying
This is a good point however the box itself says he is a king crab specifically, even though his crabmode does not even resemble your typical king crab. He is kinda a mess at first glance, reffering to both the toy and tv show, but when you give both the character and toy a chance I think both are equally interesting and fun. yeaaaaahhhhhhhhhhwoooooo
Even though Kingdom is finished, thus ending the War for Cybertron, let's see if they will put them in Legacy.
there are land crabs in the coastal rainforests, so his beast form does make sense for where they found him
Gee Smack Joey Pads
Gee Smack Joey Pads Huh.
Alucard, More Awesome Than Chuck Norris Google them
Gee Smack Joey Pads looking at his backpack made my back huer
i always thought he Rampage was a Fuzor of a scorpion and some other kind of Ant or Termite or something, boy wouldnt that be creepy
7:30 "pulling off the crab legs and eating them..." LOL
You mean 7:28?
Yes
We would do that if this was a regular crab.
But this is Rampage, after all.
He is the kind of crab that will pull off _your_ legs and eat them.
It'd be pretty neat to see what they could do with a new Generations figure of this guy considering that Kingdom now exists and they may (after kingdom) do the Transmetals, Fuzors, and Transmetals 2's, etc if they wanted too. ah yes..rampage, one of my favorites, it took me at least 15 minutes to get to vehicle mode..good times..>_< I miss this masterpiece of a toy!! T_T
Pulling off the crab legs and eating them? Last I checked the figure didn't come with melted butter in the package.

Beast Wars Rampage needs a new toy with less kibble, since the development teams can make better ones now
I would buy that in a heartbeat. Rampage was one of my favorite characters. He's what happens if you crossed Frankenstein's Monster with Hannibal Lecter and Mr. Krabs.
I'd like to see a masterpiece toy of this guy. If not, then maybe he could be in the Kingdom toyline

The best Transmetal vehicle mode out of all of them.

Claws do not peg to under the mouth in vehicle or beast mode. Who ever says that doesn't know the series. You have it the right way
Best thing I can suggest doing with the crab arms in robot mode is to turn them into extra arms, but if they're as heavy as you say they are, that would ruin the balance so much that getting him to stand should unlock an achievement in this game called life.
the tank was not wat i expected it to be. he's super cool
one thing to be wary of on Rampage is the joins on the tracks. they can over time start to split
TFwiki says it's a King Crab. But hey,it could be a coconut crab too. Those things are enormous.
In robot mode, the crab antenna are suppose to be rotated upward pointed towards his shoulders
I liked how his crab legs on the show made him look even more imposing than he already was, kinda bummed when I saw the toy didn't have all the legs on the shoulder pads.
I lost all the crab legs XD
but it was a really good toy :´)
HELL NO, Beast Wars is a great line, ya its got its ups and down but its one of the best series and toylines

I'd say, Rampage is a win win in my book, I really take an interest in robots who transform into sea creatures, especially into a tank.
Hey how much money dose he cost ?
The cheapest I’ve seen him is around 70 bucks on Australian eBay
you did not transform the claws right in tank mode. missed a step. the claws peg in much better if you rotate them up
Predacon Mr.Krabs
Hi from late 2024. It would be nice if we got a leader or Commander class update of this guy.
Did it come with his Spark in a energon cage/box that megatron would squeeze to control him.
Why don't they just use the crab claws as a pair of either arms or legs? It'd make less kibble, and loom kinda cooler.
I need this one for my collection but they are so high now..
the reason I love you is that im having a fight between auto-bots and decepticon's and auto-bots are winning
Rampage is more based off of a coconut crab rather than a king crab which might explain why he was able to become this form in the middle of a jungle
to be fair about the 'kibble' hanging off, he had that in the show as well
Crab-Tank MODE is very badass!
It's because he hasn't found that one extra hinge on the claws that allows them the clearance to plug into those other pegs.
14:30 the show verison of course is the takara japan version, like transmetal megatron
I own both Rampage and Depth Charge and they are excellent figures. The have their flaws but I enjoy them quite a lot
I think he turns into a coconut crab, not a king crab. Coconut crabs can be found in the jungles and beaches of Madagascar.
i know the claws hanging of the back is accurated but why nobody have done something like making them look like wings or something?
