Don’t be afraid to live in Zone 1/Central London. For me, I only seem to be paying about £300 a month more in rent for a comparable flat in zone 2/3 but I have £0 transport costs where as someone who lives in zone 3 may be around £200 a month in railfare. So all said and done, I probably pay an extra £100-150 a month but also don’t have a 30+ minute commute on a packed subway each way. I’m a 6 minute walk. :-)
Glad to read this; looking to take software dev job near Barbican. Will have an Irish Doodle, but I jog w/ her so exercise isn't an issue. Do you think finding a flat that allows a 60 pound dog would be difficult in Zone 1?
oldproji ye and I suspect the presenter being a cutie might have a little to do with it too... but watching she does a good job comes first, of course, ahem..😜😜
I'm an Amerian, and I will be attending Richmond the American University and your videos have been helping me out a lot! I'm nervous but yet excited as well because I will get a great education over in the UK
omg the cost is mindblowing, just freaks me out!! but i wanna do that and live in london for a year once in my life cuz it just feels so fun and exciting !!
BTW May I ask how average Londoners deal with having weekday lunch there? When I visited last month, I see hordes of people walking into Pret a Manger or EAT. around lunch time every day and just grab a cold sandwich and bottled water to go. I mean where are they going? Is that all for lunch? Seems British people don't eat much.. lol
It’s amazing how much passion you have for London. I was born in London and I’ve lived in London all my life, I wish I had the same admiration for the city as you do.
i lived in a flat less than a five-minute walk from Trafalgar Square for a bit, and it was brilliant! the flat was small, but really lovely. just down the street from the Sherlock Holmes pub, and a lovely bookstore and Boots druggist. i could pop into a mini Tesco or M&S. 15 minutes walk to Regent Street, and a quick dash to portrait gallery. i felt so lucky to be so central to everything.
The rent is more expensive than we eat, we eat every morning hotdog ,egg, toast coffee. And nothing happend. Just like we feed our house more than we eattt.
I'm moving to London next month from Manchester and my god, I've been to London a few times so I am very aware of the costs but the costs for going on nights out is crazy! Compared to what it's like up here, £5+ for a pint of beer, it's like £2 here hahaha. Great video, thanks for taking the time to create a series out of this!
I'm glad I moved out of London. Now I'm renting 1-bed flat in the old town of Vilnius and pay £600 a month, while still working in the UK and getting UK's salary.
hi, I currently live in the US, i have been trying to figure the living cost for when i move to the UK, and this is really helping know more that i did not find in my initial research on renting a flat, thanks for posting these videos
Dont forget you do not need cable TV in the UK. Freeview is broadcast free and can be picked up by aerial and has well over 100 channels including all main networks and radio stations, plus movie, history, drama, comedy, documentaries and lots more. All UK TVs can receive Freeview, but whatever service you have, you need a TV licence by law at £154 per annum. Still much cheaper than Sky or Cable.
Hi Jess, this is very good information. I moved from Atlanta, Ga in 2005 to London (intercompany transfer) and have been here since and still loving it. Not missing the USA but great to go and visit family & friends.
Very interesting about the council tax. Lots of Europeans comment to me about how annoying it is that in the U.S. we charge sales tax on top of the list price, so you never really know what it's going to cost.
While I may be off base here, it is my understanding that Councils in England are sort of like our counties. Counties tend to collect taxes or real property (value of improvements). When I used to rent, the lessor (as the property owner) was responsible for paying the property tax, so these costs were passed on to the tenant as part of the rent. Sales taxes are imposed by each State and many States allow counties to add a point or two to the State. This is one of the reasons why there is so much variation in the sales taxes from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. England has a form of sales tax, but it is uniform countrywide and automatically included in the price of goods.
I don't know if it is still the case, but when I visited England with the family, back in the 80's, the VAT we had paid was refunded to us when we left the country. I thought that was rather sweet of the British people.
That was pretty straightforward and honest video, not many people would go into exact numbers. I've made some little tweaks to my budget plan sheet, so this was very helpful.
Thanks so much for your insight on the cost of living. My daughter and myself will be relocating from Seattle, WA in two years, and your videos are extremely helpful.
Use supermarket comparison site to check food prices before you buy. Whilst Aldi & Lidl are fairly cheap, they are not as cheap as they once were & other supermarkets can be cheaper or on on a par depending on what you want to buy.
Wow Jess! This video is fantastic! I can confirm that your price ranges are amazingly accurate. Really well done and totally honest. Thanks so much for your help! Great job! Love and cheers! 👍💗😘🇬🇧
For 1.5k a month in central London you might get a shoe closet. As the lady says, if you want cheaper the further outside of the city lights you go the cheaper it gets. Not all suburbs are equal though and anywhere on a commuter belt with quick access to London won't be cheap. I grew up in South London (Brixton, Tulse Hill area) and properties have boomed since the gentrification of the area. For instance, the house I grew up in - a Victorian three story property in between Tulse Hill and Brixton Hill, was last valued at £1.2 million. Rent in that area, in a similar house to the one I mention above can cost anywhere from £1,276 a month for a two bedroom apartment to £1,900 per calendar month for 2 bedrooms plus of course, Council Tax and maintenance charges. Commuting is fairly easy but very stressful and expensive.
My husband and I rent a 1 bedroom apartment in Boulder, Colorado with amazing mountain views for $1600/month, BUT......I would trade my apartment in a heart beat to live anywhere in London!🌃
I find it interesting to see so many people say London is expensive. The only things that can be seen as expensive are rent, travel and possibly restaurants depending on where you go. Personally, most people I know that lived outside of London and live below the midlands/south of England, pay about £650 pm for a room plus bills. They drive a car, which they had to buy, insure, pay for petrol and pay parking costs. Restaurants are the same price pretty much. I actually calculated it was cheaper for me to live in London than anywhere else in the south of England. To put this into perspective , I'll give you a breakdown: Rents for living in zone 3 over a 5 year period (2015-2019) all in modern well-maintained shared houses and including bills and cleaning products - £325 pcm , £350 pcm, £500 pcm. Travel card zone 1-3 about £135 pcm (probably gone up now) Food, phone bill, misc expenses and going out/eating out expenses - same as anywhere in the South of England unless you decided to go to really posh places or you drink a lot of alcohol. For example, a pint is about £5 (but in South of England you would expect about £4 anyway), cocktails in central London could be £8-15, a posh meal out with 3 courses could be £35-50. For all my my time in London I bought pretty much all my lunches out and ate out 2-3 times a week for dinner or equivalent in takeaway. I pretty much lived on under £1000 when I calculated it, I was surprised how little I was spending. The BIG thing you need to do is make sure you get the ideal location of your rental property, I got such low rents because I researched areas, decided how long I would be happy for my commute to be, and acted quickly when I saw a room I wanted to rent so I could get the low rents. I also must say that my rooms that were around the £300 mark were tiny one beds, but I lived in a house with 2 lounges, a big kitchen and a garden at that time, and only shared with 3 others.
I don't disagree with you especially with the car thing... when you add car payment, petrol, insurance etc it actually can be almost the same in some cases... and especially if you pay a monthly train ticket to commute into London which are so expensive. But people would go mental if I said that in a video ahha
I live in a two bedroom end of terrace house in Catford (with a HUGE garden) and I pay £430 per month! (London and Quadrant Housing) The government need to build more affordable housing so that private landlords don't get to rip people off with their crazy rent charges. Rant over..
@@millanciajohnson4211 it is very difficult because of the lack of Local Govt Housing, it took me nearly 7 years to get that house! Prior to that I was living in a room for the same rent I'm currently paying for my house. It's crazy but don't be put off.. If you're willing to share you can find some decent deals all over London especially outside of Central London. Hope this is helpful. :-)
This video has helped me A LOT I'm planning to move to London for it is where my love resides. This has helped me so much anx I was really nervous at first. But this video has calmed me down and helped me a lot so I'm confident I can bring my girl to a safe home and happy life.
I live in Canada and have no plans to move to London, but your videos are so informative and thoughtful that I find myself watching even your videos that don't apply to me! Lol.
I've lived in the south and can relate to the expense in rentals. I can say in most central cities rentals can range to £1200 pcm, depending on type of property. I was supriced the last time I visited Brighton, rentals in city central are over £1000 pcm and that was for something basic. However, everything else... food, transport and even eating out was cost effective. The water rates are on average, it's £4 difference. Energy/broadband, (if you have a BT landline) this can improve credit rating. It's odd, but certain providers can contribute to credit rating. London, you have to be doing something because it the central of everything. The property boom here had an impact.
Thank you so much for making this video. Planning on moving to London from Cape Town in the next two months and you just made it easier for me. Keep up the great work
London renting is very expensive, instead or renting a place in London for over a 1500 pounds, just as a guide you can buy a home and the mortgage will cost you less. As somebody who works on the transport industry, just to let you know that unless you fully want to live centrally you can live in loads of other nice boroughs thats not too far from the city. Transport is 24 hrs and very importantly once you live by a London underground station you can access central london in minutes.
This is not always the solution for everyone. It depends on the situation. You don't know what my plans are for the next few years. I might plan to leave London and therefore buying a place doesn't make sense. Also, you can't just "buy a home". A hefty deposit is needed. Even if you can get your mortgage to be less than rent, there are still tons of costs associated with home owning that you don't have renting.
@@loveandlondon well thats true its just an oversight. Saying that though, deposits kind of only starts at 10% of the market value of the house. But just speaking from someone in the middle class i just think people can use their money wiser and do better investments. Landlords don't need to be making so much money off no one. Just an example i live by kennington tube station, lovely area, renting is around say 12- 1300 a month or less depending and in the tube it take me 2 stops to Waterloo and then bakerloo line 4 stops to Oxford street. In total about 13 minutes.
Any houses or flats in Hampstead Heath in zone 2, Wimbledon in zone 3, Richmond in zone 4 are notoriously expensive to rent or buy even though they are not close to central London. Don't forget about the TV licence fee. Colour TV £150.50 and black & white TV £50.50 a year. Maximum penalty is £1000 if you are caught watching TV without a TV licence in London and other parts of the UK.
In which place is the room amount is very less and it's also safe + there should be normal less price grocery and supermarkets with good quality. How to make good money in London.
You forgot to mention about having to pay the annual TV licence fee (applies to the whole of the UK and currently £150.50) - completely separate to cable/satellite subscription fees. I'm a Londoner but when I first re-located to the States many years ago and asked if they had a similar thing, I got very weird looks...understandably!! Total rip-off but thought it should be brought to your attention as it's illegal not to have one. You're spot on with your information, by the way!!
I am moving soon & so excited about this. Yet, the gigantic rental numbers are out of this world! Compare this to the $500 I used to pay for a central cozy studio in Istanbul & you will get the 'rental' shock here! :)
One thing you forgot is there are some places that are outside central London such as Richmond, Twickenham, Chiswick, Ealing (where I live) you look at rents that equal rents, equal council tax, but with added higher public transport costs. But very informative video
It is pricy - but I was talking to a recruiter this week with some openings in Dublin. The salary was great, but then I looked at the cost of living there... makes London look affordable!
Love and London The salaries were great, but a case of “wow, I’m rich... oh wait, I’m not, the landlord is...” - all higher than the highest ones on the London rent map, even for a small apartment. Plus, of course, it’s not London! (Ok, I’d never been to Houston before my dad moved us there, either, but that was still more familiar somehow - I’ve never even visited Ireland.) Is this the day you’re off to Sri Lanka? Hope you have a great time there and everything goes well for you both!
Can you do a video on what you earn or what you do for work and how you landed your job? I’m an American, single mother and I’m curious on the process and how people make these moves successfully from the states. I have a master’s degree. Some savings.
I’m in Ireland, Dublin is the most expensive too . Rents are 1500/1600 for a two bed on the lower scale . More so 1600-2k for two bed and they only ones look okay on inside .if I pay 1200-1300 I get old things but unfort as single parent that’s all can afford then add basic bills on top like electric which can include hot water and heat in winter and that’s it 😅🤷♀️🤪I pay €20 a week for basic electric and hot water . Heat is separate add on in winter . Don’t even have wifi or added tv anything as costs too much per month extra €100 . Then bins 24-30 euro a month . A moblie phone I gonprepay as cheaper and do unlimited internet for watching things on tv 📺 public transport is €145 on a tax saver system if you work can deduct tax off it . Food can be kinda expensive too here as we import a lot too so have shop around but a lot Irish brands more expensive than stuff from uk . Clothes and going out no funds 😖 I buy social underwater once every 6 months is all can afford . In uk there is a lot more jobs for the hard of hearing and deaf .I’m with only company in the whole of Ireland that hires for the deaf but sadly it is based in Dublin so can’t live too far from work because costs more on diff type of buses to get there when live out of Dublin in certain area . I want move to uk but maybe it’s same 😂 more jobs for deaf or deaf blind though !
@@gm836 well it really depends on your life style. I honestly would like to know what you, assuming you're a fellow londoner, assume to be a reasonable salary living in London?
What’s really funny is that I found out about your videos after my job interview, and the manager asked me “What is your salary Expectation?” I answered “Well maybe 2000-3000 pounds per month?” Coming from the Middle East I can say that it’s crazily expensive in London 😂 I think the manager realized that I have no idea where the hell I will be moving to! I can’t stop laughing at myself 🤣😕🔫
You give a lot of good information! I’m from the US and lived in London four years and I loved the experience. I shared your video to some coworkers currently thinking about moving to London. Thank you for all your info.
I hv bn researching cities outside u.s. to move wn my son is older. I pick this one. Lol Public transport is so much more efficient in London. Car note plus insurance combined is 700 per month, plus 900 for apt rent. To be able to sell the car n not hv that 700 to pay for a car per month......col will equal out to the same. I can't wait.
Hello, I love watching your videos! Thank you for doing all the videos! It is very interesting and helpful. I am from the Czech Republic but currently living in Canada. I am thinking about moving to London. May I ask you why did you choose London?
Hey Cecille! Most of this should still apply. We also have cost keys in our 3-Day London Itinerary which will help with this: loveandlondon.com/3-day-london-itinerary
Now i know that is almost impossible to live in that city in a decent way until you earn something like 2500£-3000£/month. Insane, i don’t wanna think how should be harder to build a family there
Hi Tiffany, many people watch these videos aren't from the US, and the exchange rate between pounds and dollars changes every day, so I'm afraid you'll have to do the conversions yourself.
Hi Lucy, thank you! I have some tools in the rest of this series that will help you see average rents in all areas of London. Keep watching and use those :)
Don’t be afraid to live in Zone 1/Central London.
For me, I only seem to be paying about £300 a month more in rent for a comparable flat in zone 2/3 but I have £0 transport costs where as someone who lives in zone 3 may be around £200 a month in railfare. People usually let other rooms from the flat or house to other housemates which makes the rent more afordable.

Another interesting fact about renting in London. We pay on average an extra £6 per day on rent just to get an extra 10 minutes sleep every morning.

Love your videos, so helpful. I am currently planning to move to London. Visited London about three times.
Awesome!
Thanks so much again for doing this series. I have a running checklist of things for us to figure out and you’ve helped me a ton!!
You’re verrrrrry welcome!
Hi
Helo
There's no better place than London ☺
I'm getting Monica Geller vibes
lol just started the series yesterday
Thank you so much for making this video. Planning on moving to London from Cape Town in the next two months and you just made it easier for me. Keep up the great work
Glad I could help Dominic! Good luck with the move.
Not really fair to assume people just "need to use money wiser" and that's why they can't buy a place, if they even want to.
Currently thinking about moving to London. Your videos are really helping, thanks!
You're welcome Carla!
Who has black and white TVs?! Lol
I live in India now...but I want to settle in london alone. Is it costly to buy an apartment and live there??
Elisha Khan To buy? :) you mean to rent, cuz buying is almost impossible.
Yes it is!
@@ChicProfile is there no chance to buy?
@@elishakhan72 Of course. Look on Rightmove to see prices :)
@@loveandlondon thank you
In which place is the room amount is very less and it's also safe + there should be normal less price grocery and supermarkets with good quality. How to make good money in London.
If I ever hit a huge lottery... I'm gonna buy a flat in London. As it is, I'll just have to visit and use AirBNB!
Yes this is a big help , London is just so expensive
I was actually thinking that it's comparable to NYC.
London so expensive but amazing place someday can we meet ❤️
You forgot to mention about having to pay the annual TV licence fee (applies to the whole of the UK and currently £150.50) - completely separate to cable/satellite subscription fees. I'm a Londoner but when I first re-located to the States many years ago and asked if they had a similar thing, I got very weird looks...understandably!! Total rip-off but thought it should be brought to your attention as it's illegal not to have one. You're spot on with your information, by the way!!
I'm pretty sure I mentioned it? If not, it's in the free guide :)
11 pounds for a cocktail? That's crazy!
I am moving soon & so excited about this. Yet, the gigantic rental numbers are out of this world! Compare this to the $500 I used to pay for a central cozy studio in Istanbul & you will get the 'rental' shock here! :)
Absolutely!
One thing you forgot is there are some places that are outside central London such as Richmond, Twickenham, Chiswick, Ealing (where I live) you look at rents that equal rents, equal council tax, but with added higher public transport costs. But very informative video
I did say that :)
It is pricy - but I was talking to a recruiter this week with some openings in Dublin. The salary was great, but then I looked at the cost of living there... makes London look affordable!
Yeah I bet! Salaries don’t match the costs?
Love and London The salaries were great, but a case of “wow, I’m rich... oh wait, I’m not, the landlord is...” - all higher than the highest ones on the London rent map, even for a small apartment.
Plus, of course, it’s not London! (Ok, I’d never been to Houston before my dad moved us there, either, but that was still more familiar somehow - I’ve never even visited Ireland.)
Is this the day you’re off to Sri Lanka? Hope you have a great time there and everything goes well for you both!
i would have thought even higher than again i'm used to south florida prices
Hello, just wanted to say thank you, it’s a really helpful video. My girlfriend and I will make the big move in the next 2-3 months!
Great! Glad you found it helpful Christopher :)
Wow I guess I wont be able to live in London. I will die from hunger. :(
SAD X/
I am formerly a Londoner. Born and raised there. London housing costs are now prohibitively expensive.
absolutely
With your videos l am practicing my english, good place to live.

Looks like I’m not leaving Pittsburgh PA for a good decade.
Great videos, highly informative stuff about London! Earned yourself a sub! ^^
Thanks for watching West.
im not afraid of the rent bc i live in Argentina which rent is the 70% of your salary :)) cant wait to move to london
oh wow!
You are helping a lot to your subscribers with your excellent content. God bless you!
Thank you
Can you do a video on what you earn or what you do for work and how you landed your job? I’m an American, single mother and I’m curious on the process and how people make these moves successfully from the states. I have a master’s degree. Some savings.
I'm afraid I can't give info on getting visas but I have this video about how I made this channel my job: th-cam.com/video/cBtKcBHHy-o/w-d-xo.html&t
Keep dining in central London and keep us up-to-date pls
Hi Jess. How are you, is it possible to talk about Prefabricated Homes in London.?thanks in advance
Yes more jobs! Thank you so much for sharing your experience Sarah ❤️ Hang in there!
So 50 bucks for lunch Jesus Christ! I’ll never be able to retire in central London maybe zone two
Gosh, I am going to get bankrupt if i am going to study in London in a few years^^
Unless you're earning 150k +, you will
firstname lastname surely you don’t have to earn that much?
@@gm836 well it really depends on your life style. I honestly would like to know what you, assuming you're a fellow londoner, assume to be a reasonable salary living in London?
firstname lastname I mean people make do with like 40K
Where are you studying ? Anybody from Roehampton University area ?
This particular hairstyle suits you well dear Jess !!
Regards Gwenn Gomes Goa India
I’d say zone 3 in n/nw London is a good call
I live in San Francisco area and it sounds just the same.
I've read SF is more expensive than London!
Haha aw ! That's ok!
Thank you. I definitely needed this for my move
You're very welcome!
Is it possible to still get a copy of your The Cost of Living in London Guide?
I'm afraid not!
You give a lot of good information! I’m from the US and lived in London four years and I loved the experience. I shared your video to some coworkers currently thinking about moving to London. Thank you for all your info.
Thanks Tracy!
Love and London You are welcome!
Ohh India is great....i thought everything is expensive here....
So is Pakistan 😂😁❤
Hello, I love watching your videos! Thank you for doing all the videos! It is very interesting and helpful. I am from the Czech Republic but currently living in Canada. I am thinking about moving to London. May I ask you why did you choose London?
Hey! It would be cool if at some point you did a updated video about this cos obviously costs change 🙂
Hey Cecille! Most of this should still apply. We also have cost keys in our 3-Day London Itinerary which will help with this: loveandlondon.com/3-day-london-itinerary
@@loveandlondon thank you so much!!!
Wow! When I left England, a few years ago now, a good pint of beer cost me 22p! 😀😀
Woahhhhhh
Maybe the Vietnam War, 1974 😂😂😂
£1555 is that in Chelsea or old Kent road, elephant and castle, Peckham etc is cheaper
Have you done an updated version of this in a "post" covid world?
I have a "moving to london costs" video from a couple years ago.
Thanks Jess as always for the advice!
You’re welcome!
I live in a small Florida town with absolutely nothing special about it and I pay more expensive rent wtf
Now i know that is almost impossible to live in that city in a decent way until you earn something like 2500£-3000£/month. Insane, i don’t wanna think how should be harder to build a family there
Yeah, it's tough. People try to make it work by living in cheaper areas farther outside the center of the city.
Hi, can you talk about if it’s hard to look for a job in london if you are a immigrant?
3.12 for eggs. That's expensive for me.
Sweetheart please tell me what that song called used on the background . Who made it. I like it
Whats up with the salary gap between US and UK. A PT can earn $80k in the US but only £25k in the UK???
The rent is insane but much less compared to that in hongkong
Yup!
I’m looking to move plus 3 people . Will he relocating for work . My job will be located on the south of London.
How is she saying she takes Ubers on the weekend? I thought they lost their licence to operate in London?
They did but they appealed it and can continue to operate until their appeal is heard in court (which may be a few months away).
Thank you very much for these videos :D
When you talk about money can you use both American dollars and UK ??? Very hard to understand thank you love your videos
Hi Tiffany, many people watch these videos aren't from the US, and the exchange rate between pounds and dollars changes every day, so I'm afraid you'll have to do the conversions yourself.
I just found your channel. So glad I did! I keep hearing that Hampstead is a great area to live, how affordable are the rents there?
Hi Lucy, thank you! I have some tools in the rest of this series that will help you see average rents in all areas of London. Keep watching and use those :)
Love and London I will. Thank you!
Harrods also does groceries 😂
