I gave up on keeping tropical here in NJ, USA. I applaud your efforts considering the UK is at a more northern longitude. I had a major losses one year with 2 different bananas that I mulched and wrapped very carefully, as well as a Chinese Windmill Palm (did come back though). I had been taking all of the cannas, bananas, palm, alocasias inside to the basement for the entire winter. The pots were very heavy and they never fully recovered during the summer. Nice job in your winterization efforts.
Wow how could I missed your channel! Really great stuff! Instant subscribe! I am an extreme cold hardy tropical garden freak from northern Greece (not the warm sunny zone10 greece you may probably have in mind 😂 ) , my two gardens are located in zones 9a and 8a !!! I really like to push my plants to their limits! Since yesterday we had temperatures like spring the hole winter but as of tomorrow the temperature will get in true winter temps and from the upcoming week we are expected to reach -5c here for a few days with highs to 1c ... I said "extreme" because I even grow outdoors ficus alli, ficus elastica, monstera deliciosa, schef arboricola, lots of bananas and a ton of aloes! Well , 2 years ago I lost everything when we reach -8c for 3 consecutive days with total freezing temperatures... But I still push the boundaries!!!
I would not cut those tree fern fronds off, yet. Wait until spring at the very least if drooping down. You will only narrow the crown and therefore restrict future growth. There may also be a lot more frost in the coming months. It's only January.
I have a green Cordyline which looks identical to yours. Also mushy at the top! Let’s hope they regrow from the side of the trunk. I also have that lemon ball sedum (the green one you want more of). Just cut a bit off, throw it on the ground, and it will grow! Very tough plant!!!
Hello Hannah! Here in Belize, the temperature goes down to the 20's when there is a cold front, so it's the best time of year for plants. Not too cold, not too warm, and not much rain either. This is the time of year when plants such as hibiscus, roses, hippeastrum and crown of thorns start producing flowers. The rest of the year they most commonly only have leaves. Although it does feel like the sun scorches a bit more.
Hi Hannah sad to see your plants taking a hit like that i was in the garden society last week and noticed they also took a big hit in there big Butia palms and there big Canary palms i also popped in to Allington nursery and they also took a big hit and said they had a minus 10.With your cordyline i would cut that down to about 6 inches from the top of the soil and it should send out new shoots as mine have in the past after a big freeze and now i have twins grown from the stump and they are about 8ft tall and look amazing better than the mother plant hope this helps and looking forward to more of you videos in the coming months as you battle against mother nature with your wonderful tropical garden.
Your garden still looks very lush and green. We had temperatures down to 0F or -18 C so I think I lost a lot in my garden. My small fatsia all look like they either took a real hard knock or even possibly died. 😢 Spring will tell. I moved my potted olive trees inside during the worst of it. They are back outside now, on my covered front porch so they’re a bit protected compared to if they were out in the open. I’m hoping I didn’t lose my basjoo or my t-Rex.
Your cordyline will regrow from the bottom for sure not sure from the trunk itself. Try to brake the tree fern stems instead of cutting them of. Less bleeding.
Bravo! Perfect garden. In Serbia weather this winter is very good. I cut my banana in december but temperature is 5-15C 😬 Seen my garden in village! Greetings from Serbia 🤗✋🔝
I’m so sad about my tropical garden that I started last summer. Unfortunately all of my plants died off due to the ground not draining! My bananas, my multiple ferns… my cordylines.. my new build garden is a swamp! Deep down it’s just made of clay and won’t allow drainage :( time to restart my garden 😭
It's frustrating isn't it! It got down to -13c here in Suffolk and some of my cordylines look exactly like yours...if we are lucky they may just regrow from the top but as you say, worst case they will come back from the bottom. My 8ft Musa basjoo stems were knocked to the ground but we all know how vigorously they will come back this year eh! I think a lot of us used some colourful language! Do you know which Schefflera plant you have? It must be one of the hardier ones... Your garden is truly amazing👍
Hi Hanna, here in Stoke on trent my very mature Torbays have taken a right battering along with pretty much everything in the greenhouse ,l expected some losses but not quite on this scale, l also pondered about the dead tree fern leaves but decided to bend them over the crown ,personally l prefer a slightly reduced crown to another trip to the local tip🤣
Hi Hannah, great update :) unfortunately I think your larger cordyline will also lose it’s growing point but will reshoot from the trunk or base. Mine all look damaged to some extent but like yours are a mixture of collapses and browning
Winter is not friendly for our plants anywhere,❄️😢 Hope all look beautiful for spring like any other year,,I’m in australia is summer now but ,not looking forward to next winter.💚🌱☘️🌵💚
Weather (canada) here is crazy. Just before Christmas our high temps were -12c with nighttime windchills of -25c. The week of new year we had highs of +10 & +12. This week we had +3&+ 4 the first few days & the rest of the week we had highs of -3 & - 5. We've never had a January this warm. Never sure how warm to dress with the rollercoaster temps.
Wow that was super chilly 🥶 Yes it’s so strange as we have mild temps now too! Wouldn’t be surprised though if it snows again in the next few months ❄️
Thanks for sharing the update. Seen a few of these from people around the UK and the variation in damage between different parts is huge. There's no neat north/south divide though it does seem coastal areas did better. Quick Q for you, I was going to get a bottlebrush plant but had read they are not that hardy yet you've left yours out over winter - do you find it does OK? Also what size is your garden out of interest, always hard to get a sense of scale with tropical planting. Thanks so much.
My garden is 10x6 metres 🌿 Bottlebrush is pretty hardy unless it’s a small plant, I’ve had mine out for over three years and never had any problems, they seem to do better in the ground than in pots 🌺
@@TropicalPlantAddict thanks Hannah I'll definitely try a Bottlebrush now! The garden I've started is 10x7 so pretty similar to yours. Just trying to negotiate with the kids how much lawn I can remove! Doubt I'll get the nice little island in the middle that you've got.
Alstroemeria becomes invasive if not potted. In the US it's sold in bundles for floral arrangements being a long-lasting cut flower. How about a Monster update soon? Pretty please!
It was one of my favourite flowers last year, so beautiful!, Perhaps I’ll dig part of it up and put it in a pot. Monster has had some health issues over the past few years, she’s ok but I don’t film her for TH-cam anymore 🐥
I understand fully. I lost one of my budgie boys during the pandemic and it's made me even more of a (protective) momma bear. Good health to you and yours! ❤

Yes I’ll wait for them to hang down first, won’t be cutting it yet 🌿
agree with David you will get crown narrowing if you don't wait until they droop which opens the crown for new growth
@@peterkay8212 yes I’ll be waiting for them to droop first like the others I cut 🌿

I think the cordyline will come back. We had 11 degree weather last year and they died back, but came back in late spring. Good luck.

Hi hanna same has happened in my garden so you water any of your plants in the winter I'm not sure if I should water some of them
I don’t water any of my plants during winter ❄️

Ok thanks hanna.
My red Cordylines both got damaged after the snowfall and like you I am not sure they will survive. They look really mushy .
Fingers crossed they will grow back from the base 🤞🏻🌿
The cordyline will shoot out the bottom…
Yes that’s right 🙃

Such a shame about your plants I have lost a few of mine as well
