    My favorite line from a rock and roll song... "I'm not the world's most passionate man but I know what I am I'm a man I'm a man and so is Lola!"!

    • @enlightendbel
      @enlightendbel 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Interesting since there is no such line in that song.
      It's "I'm not the worlds most MASCULINE MAN, ..."

      OH, ok. At least we're talking about that very last verse. Still my favorite line in any rock tune.

    Band manager picked up a girl at a bar in lower Manhattan(?) In the 1970s, i believe, who ended up not being a girl after all. The band decided to write this song about it. Turned out to be a smash.

      Yes. The manager met someone in a bar in Manhattan in the 70s then Ray went back in time to write the song to release it in June 1970.
      There are two versions of the origins of the story which led to the song. Neither involve Manhattan.
      One has the incident taking place in Paris, the other in London.

  • @bobbyc3895

    This song came out in 1970, and the club scene in Soho (west end of London) was full of many colorful characters and all sorts of sexuality. So it wasn't a surprise that you might encounter someone who "walked like a woman and talked like a man". And for someone who, maybe was quite aware of these things, it could have come as bit of a surprise.
    Aside from the lyrics, it really is a great song and that was the genius of the Kinks is that they were creating that bridge from the Beatles to bands like The Who and the Rolling Stones.

    • @Oxter
      @Oxter 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gender non-conformity was a big thing in the '70's. The trans movement has rolled that back 50 years by demanding that women wear dresses and make up (and if a man does this he is a woman) and that men are amorphous beings. Stupid, stupid and deeply homophobic.

    Ahhhh the Kinks! The quintessential sound of England, from the edgy rock of their early years which drew inspiration from American R&B to the later English music hall folksy sound. Lola, probably more relevant now than it was when it was first released way back in 1970. You should react to more Kinks. I would recommend "Come Dancing" That would put a smile on your face for sure.

    Waterloo Sunset is an absolute classic, quite probably their finest song for me but their back catalogue is like a history of popular music. Victoria, Dedicated Follower of Fashion, Autumn Almanac, Dead End Street all great songs, you can't really go wrong with this band.

    Ah Morenikeji, I have no idea what things are like in Nigeria but I’m assuming things are more conservative. This was a song written in the 60s. It’s actually way ahead of it’s time. But London is a very cosmopolitan and liberal place back then and now. That extremely witty song captures it nicely. The Kinks wrote some great songs capturing the zeitgeist like that. If you ever come to London and I hope you do, then prepare for a culture shock. I’ll show you around!

    This is a great song, lyrically and musically, as you say the rhythm, its comical too.
    Your face was a picture when it hit you what the song is about, maybe things are more conservative in Nigeria?
    In the 60's when this was written I think it was fairly controversial, but things have moved on and people, generally, accept the way people want to live their lives

    Homosexuality was legalised in 1967 in the UK, just 3 years before this was released. London, and especially Soho, was probably more relaxed, but attitudes were still quite conservative when it came to alternative sexuality...
    I guess the radio and tv executives didn't understand what it was about! Bear in mind that just 14 years later, Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Relax" was banned by the BBC.

    Yeah this song always makes me laugh. He thought he was having a wonderful date with a woman but she was a man. It's happened to so many guys over the decades and that's the funny part about it. Nothing against anyone trans people it's just because of the stereotypes we have have for so many things.

      I remember watching movies with similar stories to this Lola’s story.
      In all sincerity, your comment reminded me of that😄.

    This song is an awesome play on words, it is all lined to make out Lola is a man, but the singer says I am a man and so is Lola, in other words Lola is either a man or is pleased that the singer is, the other major Kinks hit Girl you really got me.

      Even though many different artist we may not be a fan of some, still their style is very important to keep in the mix for inspiring
      Young artist. A good deal of inspirational artist can come from unexpected bands and styles of music.

      Had a TV show featuring groups from all around the world.

    That was difficult for you Mo … I think I can guess both the influences in your background and the Societal problems you might encounter if you discussed the lyrics. But it’s okay, you don’t have to go there. Remember that. If you make a video and you feel compromised by the lyrics, hit delete … and find something else less potentially controversial. There are hundreds of thousands of music videos out there and probably 90% of them are going to put the smile back on your face. Don’t go out of your comfort zone for anybody.

    The line "I'm glad I'm a man and so's Lola" is ambiguous (deliberately). It can be taken to mean Lola is also a man, or that Lola is also glad he (the singer) is a man. The ambiguity is one reason this song is such a lot of fun, because it plays with words.
