I met Steve Martin when he was filming Planes, Trains and Automobiles in NorthernIllinois. He was a PRICK to the fans who had come out to see him. John Candy was great! He walked over to the fans and talked and signed autographs until the crew dragged him away. Martin just waved the fans off without a word and walked away.
I had a friend that fell down in P.E. class couldn't get back up found out he had Leukemia and he wanted to meet, Steve Martin in person then call his Booking agent. just so happen Steve Martin was talking to him same time , then call him. Steve Martin drop everything flew down that very day and saw my friend Bruce spin then play Banjos And told each others jokes with one an other. And Bruce got his wish. The next day I lost my friend.

Steve Martin is an amazing banjo player. World Class!
I love this episode, and what a truly great banjo players!
Great clip ! I love how Steve Martin channels Jack Benny with that long silent look at Noam ! Thanx for sharing !!
What a shame Steve didn't play a bit more. He's an awsome banjo player.
saw him at the cellar door in georgetown in DC in the 1970s before he got movie famous. top notch banjo player and comedian.
steve martin is a national treasure, so freakin' talented!
Except when he does standup
Yep and a conservative

Nice reward 50K!
Thanks for posting this video!
I snicker every time he hands the check to Noam knowing what is coming 😂😂😂
The look that Steve gave him was HILARIOUS!
Awesome. So funny. I really get Steve Martin's humor.
Such a funny guy and he plays so good!
And now with Noam being one of the Punch Brothers and part of Mighty Poplar, the sky's his limit.
Hahahaha... 🤣😂😂😂🤣
This is just brilliant, Steve Martin at his low key hilarious and David Letterman just giving it that late night class!
I was in england when this happened and one month later i was back in India.
I love how Steve Martin looks at him like "Oh you didn't!"
Paul playing Foggy Mountain Breakdown on the intro is pretty cool. Especially since he played it with Martin on the show.
Steve always excellent!
You're great ❤😅steve
Steve Martin is just awesome!

Two comedy Grammy awards, three musical Grammy awards. Not bad, Steve. I liked his book, too.

1:45 when Steve follows up with the same discordant note that probably was a fluke (or intentional?)
Miss David letterman, Carson, etc.
Barbara Bivens , me too. Hate late night political hacking.
I hope if anyone wants to fuck around and find out that the old rebel call comes back!!!!! Sends chills down their spines as they running
Mr Martin is a comic genius. His comedic timing is perfect.
I never thought Steve was that funny , but , he is an accomplished banjo player.
Then you must never have seen The Jerk or Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

Love this!
It wasn't a handkerchief, it was the 50,000 dollar check he just presented to Noam.
OMG! Banjo to sitar to piano? He certainly deserves a big ole prize. My mind is blown- so was Steve Martins, lol!
Noam making sure the check isn’t post-dated.
Fact is Martin is one of the best pickers on the planet.
No. He's a highly talented amateur - not anywhere nearly as good as Noam Pikelny and at least 10 other banjo players.

My dad and grandpa both could play but by ear never learned to read music but far from it hurting them any they sure could play
Whoa. That check flew.
Was that Bach's inventions, normally on harpsichord? Stellar! Kudos!
the lick is from the 1st strain of Bach’s violin partita 1 courante double
Down at teddysbarn
Rachel Dunzweiler Oh thanks! 💛👍
word!
If Steve Martin were not "Steve Martin" .. and approached Noam at a festival for a jam... you can pretty much bet what would NOT happen.
wait wait wait... was the beginning the same from Deliverance?
Wow that's what Dueling Banjos is.
Priceless
Deserving of every penny of that check
I swear this is the only banjo song i know lol its kinda strange you don't get much mainstream banjo 🪕 music or songs including banjos

Noam reminds me of Chris Thile the way he looks when he's playing.

OMG I freaked out so hardcore when that happened. I want checks that do that.
I wonder how many people missed the check flying back.
Especially for a video featuring music the audio could'ave been a bit better.
Reminds me of Jack Bennys’ deadpan!😂
I'm more impressed with that floating napkin that travels to steve Martin's front pocket real fast..😮
This was filmed in 2010, why does it sound like it's from the 1960s?
Martin does a great W.C. Fields grimace there.
fuuuuuuuck
mighty fine pickin an a pluckin .
Chain chain chain?
Awesome.
So Much for That Duel Huh...Lol..Awesome !!! :-) (y)
i guess dave didn't notice the check jump from noam's pocket back to steve's pocket after noam showed him up.
Think there is a duelling Sitars somewhere down this rabbit hole!
Roy Clark yesterday
Never knew Steve Martin. Played the Banjo
He's a really good banjo player. Check more YT videos of him playing.
I miss David Letterman. David and Johnny Carson were the GREATEST!!!
Me too Mick !
Wait what was the pocket thing
It was the check flying back to stevie
That's a "Jack Benny grimace"
Great gag :)
dueling banjos is ole fashioned?
Ol' Steve was expecting the Deliverance version.
Steve shoulda said “ I’m canceling that check “
how'd they pull off that bit with the pocket handkerchief??
+alanna zaritz I just listened to punch brothers interview on the Nerdist podcast. the check was on a piece of fishing line and Steve Martin had a gizmo which retracted the fishing line. It's a classic magic trick.
I think that was the check that Martin just gave him.
You don't say.
The funny thing was, I didn’t see Steve or Noam or anyone else make a move to trigger the check coming back
Was that a garden gnome with Steve Martin on letterman
@Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
no sound
that sounded a lot like what Ralph Machio played to win the duel in "Crossroads"
Yup, obviously a classical guitarist. Steve's response, quite amusing. Lol
First time I’ve heard Bach on a banjo.
super funny bit. classic steve.
steve should have just replied to that with.. da da dung ding dung.. and a smile
You should see him in the Jerk.
The piano version foggy mountain break down was sick
Jack Benny routine
Wtf was that??? He gave up before the song even got started....
It wasn't about the song. It was about Steve getting outdueled and magically taking the check back.
Great bit, Haha
Great to see white classics in Hollywood
"Deliverance" ^______^
Paul playing Foggy Mt. Breakdown on the piano was cool!
Are you sure that's not a young Tom Hanks?
Hysterical, but of course it's Steve Martin, so....
Anticlimactic. But for those who enjoy that, this video upload must be a real treat. If u want fun try typing in Leslie Nielsen.
The banjo guy looks a bit like a young Tom Hanks by jingo
Steve Martin brushing off an old bit Jack Benny did with his violin.....
I think Noam is a better banjo player than Steve.
No real musician ever says sh*t like this. They both have a passion for an instrument, it’s not a competition.

Wish the guys had played all the tune. Feel cheated.
HaHaHa! Steve looks pissed!
The sound is poor. Sad since this is a terrific version of the classic.
That was a short duel.
