    I just returned from the shouldice clinic. July 21 2022.
    I can't say enough good things about this facility. In regards to your vegan diet, we had a fella there who is also vegan. They have learned a few things about the vegan diet. My surgery went well. But absolutely, second day is worse. I initially refused meds , but oh yeah, do take them. I drove 10 hours to get there, well worth it.
    The staff is amazing. The food. Oh my. So good. I had a mesh surgery back in 2004 at the local butcher shop in Timmins. I suffered in agony for 2 years. Severe infections, bruising, and pain that still on occasion flares up. Do not ever get a mesh. And if you do need a mesh, these guys are experts. You don't get a plumber to change your brakes, right. I can't believe that I had surgery 4 days ago. I am sore, yes, but nothing compared to what the Timmins butchers did to me.

    Hey, I'm two and a half weeks post-op for an inguinal repair at Shouldice. Just wanted to say thanks for putting this video together and answering the comments. You're sharing lots of great info on your recovery and its been incredibly helpful to hear from someone who is pretty young and fit as to what to expect and how you're progressing back into your workouts.

    Yes, to answer your questions. The scar is 3 inches on both sides of the groin area. I had two of them. I am 5/8 181 lbs RHM-ROCK HARD MUSCLE. Today is the best it felt so far, walking with no problem, the right side is good, also, for the men, expect the reproductive organs to be black and blue and swollen. It been 9 days now. I could not feel anything for two days because of the numbness of the anastetic i am thinking. The private parts have returned to normal, and the coloration and normality is back 90%, not trying to be graphic, but i must let men know what to expect and my surgeon did give me a heads up about the issue. But i am having some issues and serious sharp pain on the left side if i sit down suddenly, and if i have a bowel movement, the pain on the let side is sharp and intense, and as soon as you finish the pain stops, and my theory is that you pushing against 4 layers of stitches during a bowel movement. When Fett talks about pain and some discomfort, he is telling the truth.

    I am a hundred percent recovered, been practicing martial arts again for the first time in months. Back in the gym. Yes the recovery was brutal, you name it, it was a process. Made sure that i got my water in take in, ate good organic foods, meats, etc. to make sure to repair the tissues. I was advised by Dr Echo not workout of walk for 5 weeks. Dr Antony Echo assistant professor of reconstructive surgery in Houston, Tx did mine. He is one hell of a surgeon, works out stays in shape, real sharp and smart. Dr Echo looked at me right before i got the anathesia , " I will fix this real good, you will be able to do all that you again" . He was correct, i am in good shape.

    Put about 40dry prunes in a pot with water and bring them to a boil and after they cool off, refrigerate.
    I eat 3 five times a day. When it’s time to poop it’s much easier.
    I have two inguinol hernia, one on each side. I’m currently following a natural protocol. Exercise and a heria belt. I just started two weeks ago and if this doesn’t work I totally believe Shouldice is the way to go. Borrow money if you have to.
    Well thanks to all for posting such encouraging comments 🙏🙏

    I wont be hitting the gym for 5 more weeks. I have to get the pain on the left side to stop. I just called my surgeons office earlier. I only feel the pain i sit down suddenly or have to have a bowel movement, and once cleared the pain stops. So i think my surgeon is correct about my abs being really tight and warned me not to lift anymore than 10 lbs. My surgeon is Dr Anthony Echo , Professor of Reconstructive. Surgery. He is really good. So i think it just some suture pain from 2 inner layer of stiches and then the e epidermal layer and then the outer skin, so the surgery has 3 layers total, with a double row for the muscle. I had both sides done, so am pretty chopped up and the swelling is going down fast. I am making sure to get my meals in and if you guys get the surgery, get fiber in your diet. Constipation and the Shouldice don't mix.

    I used to live in Lloydminster, SK but relocated to Regina because I got a job offer here. However, I decided to have my surgery in Lloydminster because I didn’t want to cancel and wait months again for a spot in Regina. Now, I wish I could go back in time and avoid that surgery in Lloydminster and overall in Sasasktchewan. It’s been over a year since the surgery, and after six months, I started feeling pain again. I contacted my surgeon back in Lloydminster, but he just told me to go to a hospital or walk-in clinic in Regina and get an ultrasound, etc.
    I’ve been to walk-in clinics in Regina a couple of times, had ultrasounds done, but that’s a whole other story. No one here really seems to care-they just tell me everything is fine, but I’m in pain almost all the time. There’s no real help here in Saskatchewan. I can’t enjoy life like I used to, can’t walk straight without pain, and even sleeping is difficult now.
    Now, I’m considering becoming a patient at Shouldice Hospital. I don’t have any insurance coverage, just Saskatchewan healthcare, which probably won’t cover anything. I’ll likely have to pay everything out of pocket, but I don’t have much of a choice.
    Quick question: How long did you stay at the Shoulice Hospital, and how was your flight back to Alberta after the surgery y was done?
    Anyway, I’m glad for you, man, and I hope you’re doing great!

Hang in there man, hopefully the people at Shouldice can fix you sooner than later.

    HI,
    I am 2.5 weeks post-op from having a mesh removal and tissue repair here in the states via a shouldice. I watched your video and wondered if you had some similar experiences when healing and how you dealt.
    During your healing for the first few weeks or even months did you ever have jabs in and around your hernia site, like pops and clicks that resonate from the area? Its been happening more and more, especially as I walk more. It's almost like joints and bones cracking. My doctor and other friends I talk to who have had this procedure done say its completely normal, attributing this to scar tissue forming and atrophy. Plus they say the inflammation is placing pressure on the nerves. Did you experience this at all and did that finally go away?
    Joshua

    • @fettmund9077
      @fettmund9077  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      IrishBoySF Hi Joshua, good question, yes I experienced those sensations quite a bit for the first few months. All the while getting less and less frequent. It’s been 1 year and 3 months since my surgery and I will still occasionally get those sensations. Last week I was pulling a large torque wrench and I felt a pop at my surgery site, every time that happens I think to myself “I damaged the hernia repair” or “I popped a stitch”, but so far every time that’s happened it’s been a non issue. Sometimes it will feel like something tore and I’ll be sore for a bit in that area(maximum 2-3 days) then it goes away and I feel like I have more mobility as it seems that it’s just scar tissue breaking up. Keep moving, don’t let the area get stiff, test those stiches out and break up the scar tissue.
      Best of luck on your recovery!
      Justin

      Fett Mund thank you for the quick reply and the verification this seems to be a normal occurance. This feeling has left me very neurotic to say the least. I'm moving about for sure walking everyday more and more and I have begun stretching exercises at home. How has this impacted your weight and cardio training? Were you able to resume workouts by the 6th week or so?

    • @fettmund9077
      @fettmund9077  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At first I dropped a few pounds because I caught a bug on my travels to the surgery, so my appetite was down. Now, I’m up about 15lbs from the time of the surgery. It really didn’t effect my cardio at all, only my flexibility. I was exercising at 6 weeks with light stretching and body weight. It took about a year for me to feel 100% confident to get back to my previous amount I would lift when weight training.

    • @IrishBoySF
      @IrishBoySF 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fett Mund I'm looking forward to when I can workout again and lift. But right now my goal is to heal and work slowly towards strength and. cardio endurance. Much appreciate your time in replying.

      @@fettmund9077 did the healing feel worse by the 4week? My pain is minimal but the little annoyances or tweaks and pokes form the surgery site is so very unnerving. Plus getting out of a char or bed now really stretches the surgery site since there is so much stiffness. I know you stated this before but were the feelings very bad by the 4week? When did you start to feel some relief? And by any chance did you have any fluid buildup under the surgery site like a seroma? If so did this dissipate on it’s own? Thanks man.

    I got the Shouldice method surgery (no mesh).
    Not sure if age is a big factor in the healing process I'm 26. I'm 16 days post op. I've been walking since the surgery day. 1000 steps x days after recovery (pretty much maxed out at 6000 a day though). Been doing stretches' and exercises I've seen on TH-cam almost everyday. Did light workout in the gym yesterday (day 15) light arm exercises with 10lbs dumbbells and squats and bench with just the bar (45lbs). Squats were fine, bench was very tight I had to put my legs up on the bench for the first 2 sets. Woke up today (day 16) feeling excellent.
    I've been feeling really good since about day 10 and am going to play some hockey tonight.
    I was wondering if I'm pushing it too hard though? I don't want to end up making things worse?

    Hello and thank you for your video and update in one. I wanted to ask if you ever came across the Desarda technique which is something I learned about a few years ago just browsing the web out of curiosity wondering if there is an alternative to having my hernia repaired (again) but without mesh this time. It's also a no-mesh repair approach and I'm just wondering if you came across it as well in your research and if so why you chose the Shouldice over the Desarda?
    Also, with regards to exercise you stated you aren't weight training for at least a year and doing more cardio stuff. I wanted to ask if you do HIIT type/body-weight exercises and if so how it's been for you throughout your recovery and strengthening?
    Thank you for your time and any feedback!

      Deprofundis142 Hello! I haven’t heard of Desarda before, so Shouldice was my only real no mesh option.
      As far as exercise goes, I was definitely lifting some light weights after about 4 months. I was mostly training with body weight though. Pull ups, chin ups, dips, push ups, etc. I was doing some MAX sessions on a Maxtrainer for 15 minute sessions.
      After a full year and a bit after the surgery I can say that I feel 110% better. The surgery site has most of the feeling back and it hasn’t been sore in that area for quite some time.

      Hey man, funny enough today was the first time since my surgery that I attempted a 200lb squat. I did my 25 reps I feel no pain the surgical area whatsoever. In my experience, I’m better than I was before the surgery. If I were to squat 200lbs before the surgery, my pelvic area would be swollen and just feel off, hence why I went in to get checked. They found my hernias only by ultrasound, but I figured it was something I wanted to get repaired sooner than later. So to answer your main question, i rarely feel any discomfort in the area at all anymore, and if I do it’s pretty mild and goes away quickly. That wasn’t always the case, it definitely took me a while before I trusted my surgery to hold up. Always thinking I was going to push to hard and bust a stitch...hasn’t happened and I’m lifting some decent weight for a guy my size. Hope this answered your questions, all the best to you.
      For what it’s worth, the Shouldice method is a no brainer in my opinion, if you are fortunate enough to have the means to afford it. Unfortunately the cost makes it hard for some folks to get. Anyway, you’re young and will recover quickly from the surgery if you take care of yourself properly and really allow your body to heal properly.

      This seems crazy to me. They didn’t evaluate you before they cut? An ultrasound recommendation for surgery can easily be wrong. And they didn’t do your belly button? And called the otherside off. Sorry for having to be cut open for no reason, that recovery isn’t fun.

    Hi there,
    I'm glad your surgery went really well! Good luck on the recovery!
    I'm 23 years old and have an inguinal hernia. Would you recommend Shouldice over other hospitals that use a mesh ?
    I heard some bad reviews of shouldice hospital online.

    • @fettmund9077
      @fettmund9077  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey man,
      Yes, after doing my research, I felt very comfortable making the decision to choose Shouldice’s no mesh hernia repair option. My reasoning being that several of the mesh manufacturers that are currently being sued for faulty products are still being used by surgeons, so that risk simply has not been fully addressed yet. For that reason alone Shouldice’s no mesh option was appealing to me.
      Yes, I’m aware of some online complaints about Shouldice and I have no doubt that they have had some complications with their patients over the years. I would just imagine that if there was a hospital that specialized in mesh only hernia surgeries since 1945 that there would be a staggering amount more complaints than Shouldice, simply based on the quality of mesh that has been available in the past. Plastic and polyethylene are highly foreign materials to the human body. I just like the idea of having only a few stitches of high strength plastic line inside my abdomen as opposed to mesh that can potentially harden into an abrasive shape and have tissue/other organic material potentially grow and embed into it.
      This is only my opinion, but I put a lot of time and research into my choice and 7 months after my inguinal hernia repair surgery at Shouldice, I’m confident I made the right choice for my body and my available options. My experience there was pleasant and I’m physically better than when I went in there.
      Best of luck to you, and hopefully you found something I said helpful.

      @@fettmund9077 Thank you so much for the detailed explanation. I really appreciate it!
      I have had the hernia for about 8 months now. After discovering the hernia, how long did you wait before the surgery ?
      Also, just as a side note, what worries me is that I believe shouldice requires a 3 day stay compared to other hospitals where you get dismissed the same day. It seems like a money grab but will wait for your perspective.
      Thanks again!

      I acted pretty much right away getting the ball rolling on my surgery. It took about 1/2 a year to plan and make happen.
      Yes, the stay is longer, but it’s a fairly major surgery so it’s to be expected. I wouldn’t say it’s a money grab, I think it’s a good idea to stay for a day or two after for observation.

    How small is too small? Would they operate on a golfball size which bulges out intermittently? Also, knowing what you know about the food - would you bring some with you if you were to do it again? Did they give you beans, nuts, tofu for protein and provide plant milk instead of dairy?

    • @fettmund9077

      I’m guessing a golf ball size would be considered operable. Definitely, it’s a good idea any time, especially when putting the body under stress. I don’t know, They might have, I ate what they offered. Hope this info helps.

      Hey Alan,
      Things are good, thank you for asking!
      Since my surgery I’m up about 15 lbs. I keep to a 3 day a week weight lifting program and throw in some cardio about twice a week. I still get occasional soreness in the surgery area, especially after a heavy squat session. I know what causes the soreness, so I don’t worry about it. Otherwise I would never know I had a surgery, all is well.

      Alan H Hi Alan, thanks for checking out my video. The surgery was not painful at all. I didn’t feel much at all, any discomfort I had was minor and brief. They took me to my room in a wheelchair, you’ll likely be be too medicated to walk right after the surgery. I slept off the meds and was fully coherent after a about a 2 hour nap.
      Best of luck with everything!

      Alan H I understand, I had the same questions and concerns going in. I was out for the whole thing, they medicate you pretty heavily. I did talk to some guys there that said they were awake for part of the surgery, but nobody complained about pain, the only thing they said was they could feel something going on at their surgery site(moving around), but again, no complaint of pain.
      You’ll do great, the staff does a really good job of putting you at ease before and during the surgery. They get it’s a scary thing for people and the staff at Shouldice are real pros when it comes to making the patients feel they are in good hands.

    The timing couldn't have been worse to aggravate my inguinal hernia during this pandemic. For about 15 years I've lived with a large bulge around my groin area, (which is usually how it starts) but at the beginning of all this, I've noticed a small bulge--which you can't visually see--but can actually feel.
    The unfortunate part is I can't even see my family doctor in person (or even get a consultation at Shouldice like I did 15 years ago) it's all over the phone diagnosis, so I can't even gauge how serious or non-serious it is. I have all all the typical symptoms of a tiny hernia, eg, a bit of discomfort during any straining, but no pain.
    You can imagine the blow I felt after dodging a bullet for 15 years, sucks actually. The stress of quarantine is bad enough. Having this and all the uncertainty just sort of makes it worse.

      @@fettmund9077 Thanks. I'm guessing putting on some weight during this quarantine might have something to do with it. Not being able to see a doctor plays with your mind, but you can't visibly see a bump and there's no pain when I cough or strain, so I guess I'm good for now.
