    The modern DOSBox forks really have gotten quite good. DOSBox-X in particular, with all the various options it offers and the ability to configure it all in a GUI instead of by editing a config file directly is really helpful for people that aren't yet very familiar with DOS emulation.

    For the generation who never used real dos, it is now just a handy windows tool. Isn't that amazing? Didn't know about dosbox-x..learned a few things. Thanks.

    Thanks for this great retrospective. So many great memories of the 80s. It was revolutionary back in the day to be able to do gaming at home on a computer.

    DOSBOX-X really enhanced the capabilities of DOSBOX. I do have PentiumIV, Pentium III machines that do the real thing with GeForce, TNT and Voodoo cards as a real deal thing. But DOSBox-X really is a good 'replacement' for it in many cases. Especially with its capabilities to actually run Windows98 with 3D acceleration on!

    Thanks for all of this!! Carmageddon was the first game to come to mind when I started thinking about setting this up. Haha. I still have my original game disc for it. I can't imagine how much time I must have spent on that game back in the day. I think I probably have enough vintage hardware in the basement to build a retro PC (including a Voodoo 5 5500!!!) but I sadly don't have the space to set a machine up. This looks like the ticket.

    I am a total dosbox noob and i have found dosbox-x to be the more friendlier variant to use..i especially like the "quick launch" setting in the interface...no typing just the launching of games...

    I use this DOSBOX-X app to play some old DOS Speccy and C64 emulators. It can also record game footage. That footage can be converted to MP4 or similar. No USB gamepad but keys are okay for many games. You can get SNES and MD emlators too. The MD has a version of Cave Story, so you can play that classic game under DOS. And if you get Abbaye de Morts, you can access the Gameboy, C64 and Atari versions of the game in the same rom. Of course that means homebrew too! I couldn't get a virtual CD rom to work, DUNE CD- it wouldn't install, but most things worked for me. Its a great app.

    Great video - I learned a lot - not surprising seeing as I've never actually used DOSbox-X. 😁 Hopefully, people not of the DOS generation will be inspired to engage in some gaming history.

    original hardware might be cool and all, I would love to hear that ambient hum of hard disk spinning... but for me Dosbox allows me conveniences like WASD remapped controls and other benefits such as never having to care about Conventional Memory or CD-Mouse drivers... being able to speed Up or Down at the press of a key is also a massive plus

    It was common practice to put the command @ECHO OFF at the start of the AUTOEXEC.BAT so that the commands are not shown as they are executed.
    The ECHO OFF command turns off the display of commands and adding @ at the start of a line in a batch file will hide that command in the same way. So without the @ you would see ECHO OFF every time you ran the batch file.

    • @TheRetroChannel
      @TheRetroChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I prefer to clear the screen and start with a blank space. I did actually use the @ and echo commands to make the little batch file at 1:05

  • @anthonynorton666
    @anthonynorton666 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think you have the wording transposed in the autoexec.bat file edit. You said mounting C as C:\dos, but you are actually mounting c:\dos as c. It is the file that you're mounting and referring to it AS drive c. I only mention this because it's a concept that can easily be confused for those of us that are not used to mounting files as a drive.

    I haven't found a single good tutorial yet for dosbox-x. Nobody mentions how imgmount works and where that information is stored. Is it stored per game once you mount the iso in a config file in the game's directory? If it's stored in the main config file, that means I have to imgmount every iso for every game before I play it, right?
    What's the best way to separate each game? Using a shortcut? I would never want dosbox implemented into my Windows Context menu. It's cluttered enough as it is.
    Nobody mentions these basic things in any tutorial. This is the stuff that matters so people know where things are stored.
    Also, I haven't seen anyone go into Roland Midi/Fluidsynth stuff either.
    I guess it's up to me to get my PhD in this G.D. program.

    Well, DOSBox-X is the best DOSBox of all DOSBoxes, expect I can not experience DOSBox-X without borders when I run it in openglpp output. 😕

    • @Henk717
      @Henk717 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is because pp is supposed to pick a perfect resolution without scaling. You want nearest neighbor or the regular one.
      I requested an option to keep the correct aspect ratio and they implemented it. So you can force the aspect ratio and select the original aspect ratio. Then it scales very nicely.

    • @OleAlexanderBrunaes
      @OleAlexanderBrunaes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    1:02 - "No, not even close" 😂 The strange thing is that I've seen people who are too young to ever have used DOS calling the Windows command prompt "DOS", which begs the questions why and where they heck did they even hear the term? 🤔 I can only assume they heard it from someone who heard it used back in the day who heard it from someone who… … who didn't know that the Windows command-prompt in XP wasn't actually DOS.

      Obviously desktop PCs are still far more common for business, but in terms of household computers I would have thought the opposite is now true. So I'm curious if you have a source?
