My first time ever hearing (and performing as well) this piece was when I was invited to play in an honor band. That was the first time I got to play music with people who actually cared what they sounded like. It was amazing and beautiful, and everything else. I actually started to tear up a bit during the concert because for the first time in my life, I was able to experience what it felt like to play with real musicians.
Played this 14 years ago when I was first in college. I have returned to college and got the pleasant surprise to hear that I will be playing it again! So happy to revisit a piece I fell in love with so many years ago.
I always liked the second movement most. It always reminded me of busy traffic. I, the Euph soloist, played the part of a huge garbage truck recklessly shoving everyone out of the way in order to cover my enormous route in the morning rush hour. >:)
I am a saxophonist playing this piece and I have a a few things to say. One, the fourth movement alto part is boring. Two, movement 3 is such a pretty piece. Especially all the solos in it. The 1st alto, the oboe, and the piccolo are so cool. Lastly, movement 2 is the most fun to play imo.
In order: Saint-Germain-des-Pres is the religious and cathedral district of Paris. Pigalle: A poorer region of Paris, this is essentially the red-light district. Pere Lachaise: One of the largest graveyards in Paris. Les Halles: The center and marketplace district of Paris. I think Ellerby did a masterful job of capturing these atmospheres in the piece.
It truly is a great experience when people do care. I played for the New York all state band in 2011 and it was a great feeling coming from my high school band, which wasn't too shabby to be honest. It gets better in college if you choose to pursue music.
There may be 12 or more percussion instruments being used but the music is designed to be performed by 4 percussionists. Needs some creative set-ups but nothing out of reach.
Great Piece but the My part the bass trombone part is lacking greatly in way of anything to play... oh and we are playing it right now in one of our universities bands
00:00 movement 1
3:50 movement 2
7:05 movement 3
10:30 my death
>letter A in movement 4-my death
FTFY
Au contraire... mvt 4 gave me so much life! Then again I’ve only played the tenor and bari sax parts, haven’t forayed into the clarinet parts yet
@@robertperez2262 Ah, I say this as a French Horn player! So yes, we all dreaded this movement.
But I agree, it's a very fun piece!
@@emsglaceon was gonna say: horn player? I played Horn 4 on this (or was it 2...? Regardless I didn't get to play the crazy part :( )
very relatable, i played 3rd horn and the 4th movement was like hell, but mainly because i didnt practice lmao

Did this piece require a mute?
Matt Boehme Yes, both in the euphonium part and the tuba part
As the oboe soloist, I can say this piece is actually really challenging! But it's also so much fun and it's very beautiful!
so basically the first chair oboe was gone the day we sight read this and i cried bc i had to play the solos and i was using a new reed

11:52 how was this solo 😭
Pigalle was always my favorite movement to play from this piece. I've been listening to it nonstop recently.
The third movement is really beautiful. The finale is also excellent...this piece is fun to play.
This brings back such great memories my sophomore yr. in high school, especially movement 4, go clarinets!!!!!
That Sunrise in Paris moment in the first movement... one of the best rallentandi in concert band history
Played this my sophomore year of high school, I loved that solo for second clarinet in movement 4!!!
Bro the triplets are so hard 😭
yay for 2nd clarinets!
The alto sax part at 5:31 is one of the best parts I have ever heard
We've discussed this ;)
Alex Russell We have? :P

Played this on tour 4 years ago - brings back loads of good memories, and 8:20 still gives me shivers every time I hear it!
We turned this song into a marching song and we are playing it during the boa show this year.I never heard the real thing until now it is amazing.

my high school played this for our winter concert. 12 percussion parts (or more) 4 percussionists. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!
I'm playing the timpani part for this at my school!
loved playing the timpani part!!
This is gorgeous
i love movement 3 and really fun to play
The second movement was hell for me playing euphonium, but was by far my favorite movement looking back at this piece 2 years later.
1st Horn. Glorious :D
played in Alameda county honor band this year i loved it not challenging but exciting
Movement 2 for the win
Yep. Performing this tomorrow and we have timps (me) and 4 perc.. theres a crazy amount of percussion instruments but its manageable
Movement 2 gave me strong Banjo-Kazooie vibes haha
oh yeah. Definitley the best.
I agree. i just played this song and played the 1st percussion part. There aren't that many, but they are all super involved
More specifically 1st Horn in the 4th movement! I had to deal with that part my sophomore year of high school!
The first minute or so reminds me of Howard Hanson style.... anyone ?
Palo is going to rock it out at festival!!!
Palo Verde High School's 2013 festival music. Bring it on Paris Sketches! :P
Where is the tuba solo in the second movement? Is there no justice for this beautiful instrument?
4:56 and 6:30
I like this
I have to play lead trumpet solo for this whole piece. FML 4th movement.
^yep. Just performed this piece.
What is the ensemble in this recording?
UNT wind symphony under corporon
