Great pictures of Bristol before they ruined it. I grew up there in 50s and 60s and the grass and beautiful flowers in the center was a haven a place you could sit and relax. Thanks for posting 🥰
Bristol City council ruin everything, the excuse of having to clear bomb damage was just an excuse to clear whatever they wanted to clear! I liked Broadmead before the galleries were built (Fairfax house)
Thank you for this trip down memory lane - very enjoyable. I remember as a child the bomb sites in Broadmead and how we would park there; it can be tricky working out where some of those places are today. I wonder if the show at the Hippodrome (at 5:41) was Reluctant Heroes or The Reluctant Debutante, both of which were there in the 1950s, since the letters Ant appear at the end of a word on the billboard next to it.
I'm a child of the 50's & 60's around Bristol although I lived south of the city my mother would bring me in on the bus and I can remember when the Bristol bus station was in princes st next to princes St Bridge on the city docks that was the day's I remember in my life.
I haven't been back to Bristol, properly, in thirty years. Something tells me that l'd feel a lot more at-home in these photos than in today's Bristol... Many thanks, Dave.
Enjoyed looking at these Dave. Trouble is I become melancholy - how different the streets were…clean. When the city Center looked quite beautiful with all those flowers and lawned areas. Go through the Center now, on foot, you risk life and limb with scooters cutting you up. And don’t start me on how dirty that part of town is! When was the last time it was cleaned? 🏴
Goodness. Recliffe Hill if it had been kept as it was stretching down to Bedminster what a lovely prospect. There was something uncanny at work laying waste to the whole area.
Well done Dave. I came to Bristol in '52 t was so much nicer then. Hard to imagine now that it's turned into graffiti city, occupied by layabouts, wasters, students (far too many) and a large detritus of humanity, all led by our wonderful useless Labour council, and the "woke" brigade.
I remember as an 8 year being taken to the centre and walking around that big green in the middle of the road and being in awe at queen Elizabeth's crown sat right in the middle.it must have been just after her coronation.(perhaps I dreamt it)
I own many books on historic Bristol, and many since photgraphy recorded the City Center's changes. As the record shows, the City Center has been changed many times over the last century. It is my opinion, that with every change, the City center has become less and less attractive, OR effective, in allowing the flow of traffic to pass through. It is now, an eyesaw.
I am not that familiar with Bristol but looking at these photos it is striking how well kept and smart the city was and no doubt most of the cities, towns and villages of this era were equally well kept - what has gone so wrong? our towns and cities are now in a filthy and disgusting state - what must visitors to this country think? at one time councils had the money to keep everything up to this standard and were proud to do so - not a weed in sight, no fly tipping, no litter, no wheelie bins, no ugly mobile aerial masts, no ghastly mc.donalds and similar junk food outlets, no so called 'modern architectural' monstrosities dreamed up by some hare brained council architect plonked in the middle of the pavement! Our councils are in varying degrees close to bankruptcy and have no money to spend - but they can soon find it for wretched cycle lanes and other schemes to wreck our roads.
The lord mayor just said of our finest in temple meads 2 lovely old victorian bulildings he was glad to see them go ,well theve been covered up for 20 years what a useless coment .give em concrete and clay steel and glass .city now run by morons making one way streets to pollute. So traffic goes round and round
I used to know which roads went where in Bristol (without thinking), now i Haven't a clue, many thanks for bringing back some happy memories.

No 4 along Bath Rd Totterdown
heartwarming to see, heartbreaking to see what BCC has done to our city.
Heartbreaking to see how lovely Bristol once was even the bomb damage looks better than the ugly graffitied dump I see today
Unfortunately graffiti has been allowed to ruin the look of Bristol. Regards Dave.
Enjoyed reminiscing old days in Bristol.
It has changed so much. Regards Dave.

You've done wise to stay away!
@@shaneraines2094 So l've heard, Shane!
It has changed so much. Regards Dave.
Great video, thanks for sharing. Bristol had a lot more character in the 50s
Hello Stuart. Thanks. Regards Dave.

Everything you say is true. Regards Dave.
I haven't been into the city for 4 yrs, and since the tax on entering, never will
I went to St Ursula's school in the 50's. Still have my coloring book with pictures and teacher's comments.
Fascinating. Some subtitles would have helped identify some of the less obvious photographs.

Hello Lynda. Yes there was a big crown on the Centre. Regards Dave.
@@historymandave4739 And the crown idea was repeated for the Bristol 600 celebrations in the early 70s
The centre near the Hippodrome looks like a beautiful European city. Whose idea was it to construct the present modern awfulness?

Bristol was so much nicer then not like how it is now........ And they call it progress

I rode on the zoo elephant in early 50's. I remember her being Dinah. Eventually animal rights activists had that stopped.
95% gone today.🥹
