There were many reasons to it, first and foremost being it's length. Another one was that screenplay was not able to grab the audience's attention throughout the movie. Overall, the idea was good but implementation was not proper.

The scene where SRK arranged all the kids in a row pleaded me to cry!!! After all every child is born to enjoy his or her childhood, whether it be a Brahman or Dalit!!! How can we even differentiate?? ( Don't mistake me, I wrote Brahman and Dalit just for an example)

Some directors want SRK the star so they can make money.. Very few have the courage or audacity to bring the best out of him.... Because of his theatre roots, and his wit and spontaneity ;I believe he can be the best actor. Sad, that he has some other aspirations.
