@Der Aua - What a horrendous thing to say. Did you even watch the video? The sheriff and co-creator of the program stated at 02:12 that all the funds come from the "inmate funds," which are profits made from the commissaries, so none of "your" tax dollars are being used, you misanthrope. Don't you believe that people are capable of making positive changes in their lives? I do, and it's encouraging to see the men's empathy emerge and their commitmemt to the work they're doing to reform these dogs so they can be adopted to loving homes. The men get unconditional love from the dogs, and they feel validated. That brings about change in their lives, knowing they've succeeded at something, and that leads to continued improvement in their outlook and behaviour.
@@wholeshebang1 The question is not "are they capable of making positive changes in their lives" it is do they deserve to? In the case of most that answer may be yes but for some including some dangerous killers punitive punishment or death sentences seem more just than "rehabilitation", particularly to the victims.
@@kingfisher1638 there's no dangerous killers and the like im these kind of programs. There's safety measures. So it's absolutely great that inmates get this chance.
My last rescue dog, Starsky, came from a program called Mixed Up Mutts, based out of Indiana. It was a program that allowed prisoners to train rescue dogs. Best dog I ever adopted. Came home knowing basic obedience, had no fear of people regardless of what they looked like, what they wore, tone of voice, etc. Honestly, I can't speak highly enough about programs like this. Teaching dogs and humans new tricks and fostering confidence and love for all involved. 🐾
Grandma used to say "An idle mind is the devil's playground." I guess she was right. Giving these men this constructive, life-saving work to do for and with these dogs seems to have helped the men nearly as much as the dogs. I can't think of a more worthwhile cause!
The feels are for reals. Every prison needs to have a program with animals like this. Being around dogs and experiencing unconditional love changes people, and it would do so much good for the people in prison. It helps them grow as people, and it gives these dogs who would either be living on the streets or in a kill facility a home.
This is such a brilliant programme. It's a No-Brainer! It should be introduced into all the prisons - The Dog's get rehabilitated and the inmates learn to be calm, patient and know what unconditional love feels like which must change their out-look on life and become good citizen's when they are re-leased and the Dog's find a forever loving home thank to the heroes who made it possible.
And the prisoners get rehabilitated. I can't imagine the hurt they go through when they have trained, loved, bonded become emotionally attached to the dogs...and then have to give them up knowing they'll never see them again. That breaks my heart.
This is absolutely lovely. I can't imagine how much it must hurt when they get adopted, but this program is clearly turning around the lives of both the dogs and the people.
Yeah it would be heartbreaking! I hope this helps the people in the program stay on the right track after so they can have their own dog to love for so so long the way they deserve
I think learning to properly deal with an emotional loss like that is probably a part of the growth these men experience. It might not be something all of them need to learn but I've certainly known criminals who needed that emotional skill set along with the responsibility and empathy that they'll learn from this program.
this program, I truly believe, does more to rehab those in jail than a few rounds of forced group therapy... It is amazing. I have felt the love and have been truly lifted up from low points in my own life by the strength and love afforded to me by my canine friends!
redher I am sure it does, but all we have ever done stays with us for ever, so this guys will always know that they can make a life better, and I can bet the 2 dollars in my pocket that these fellas will, when they get out of jail, adopt another dog and save another life, as much as I bet that they do not regret one single second of having those dogs in their lifes. I know it must be heart breaking, but so is loving and letting go, the great thing is that love always changes you, and that is worth it!
Oh yes, I'm sure it's heart wrenching. But at the same time, they know the dog is going to a forever home where they will be loved. So they're really just sending them on their way, along their journey-that they have made happen. Still... Of curse I know they'll be sooo sad! Happy for them-but at the same time, they won't see their dog again. But I guess theynthey'll get a new dog. Who will surely steal his/her heart...
This program is definitive proof that dogs of any breed, background and temperament can be rehabilitated and adopted into loving families. Belfast can learn a thing or two from this video, spread the word and help save Lennox!
This is a wonderful program! Both for the dogs, the inmates, and the future family that adopts the dog. It enriches the lives of the inmates. They have nothing to do in prison and some don’t have their family visit them. Plus, the dogs foster kindness, patience, and caring for someone else. And these dogs would otherwise be stuck in a cage waiting to be adopted. This should be in every prison!
This such a wonderful program, really. They say, a person who likes dog is a good person. I think, in this program, this will show that these people being housed inside the prison also have a good side.
I was watching a news show with a warden talking saying he had a prisoner that was a problem with guards and other inmates. Talked to him about traing dogs for disabled people. Told him the rules. No behaviour infractions etc. Your with the dog 24/7. I never had a problem with the inmate after that. He helps other inmates that are in the program with there dogs.
+Paula Allen (Paula's Place) wow thats truely amazing. this should definitely be done everywhere. we need to start trying to make this possible in every prison for sure. this will do so much good for both sides.
Oh my gosh. That gentleman with Petey! He just touched my heart so much. Made me cry hearing him say how proud he was to have "done something. Been successful." We all need to feel that in our lives. I pray God bless these inmates with renewed hope and continued purpose.
Wonderful job. I want to thank the inmates for having a wonderful heart ❤️ and help a dog. We can only save one at a time and one is better than none. 💋
I love the tone of voice that these men use when talking about their dogs. They are glowing! Dogs love us unconditionally. We find our humanity when we are around other animals 🐾🧡
This is amazing. Animals bring out the best in everyone. They’re pure of heart, and love without condition. Dogs are called man’s best friend for a reason.
this is so impressive! i live near gwinnett county, and for me to randomly find this video on youtube while looking for training tips -- this needs to be put on the news more and the program spread across the state. georgia has a terribly sad amount of abandoned dogs. we rescued two ~6 week old pups who were left in the small wooded area near our house, actually pretty close to the dekalb county jail. i am sharing this as much as i can! i hope there is one in every jail in the next few years!!

This type of program saved a Belgian malinois who was self mutilating. She had been in a shelter for months locked up 23 hours a day. Unsurprisingly she was stressed, the dog was sent to one of these programmes. After treatment for an ear infection, lice , nails clipped and a thorough bath/groom; she was named Jesse and trained as k9 drug detection dog. She went down to Utah and now works with their department of corrections.
This reminds me of when my younger brother Patrick and I got a black Labrador retriever Pitbull mix named Maggie from the Oregon humane society back on June 22nd 2013 she was 9 years old we had her for 5 wonderful years until August 20th 2018 when she was 14 years old she passed away from cancer😢💔 and then 2 years later later my younger brother Patrick passed away from a heart attack in his sleep from a alcohol overdose on August 2nd 2020 he was just 28 years old when he passed away 😢💔
This is a win win. Inmates rescuing dogs, dogs rescuing inmates. I believe there's a connection between a dog and a person. This program gives inmates a purpose and a human touch which they don't usually have in jail. Everyone needs a connection to something that loves them. Heartbreaking when the dogs graduate from the program and the inmates have to say goodbye.
I express my thanks for sharing the video, I am curious if DeKalb County in Georgia currently has this program. If possible, I have thought to assist the prisoners who are apart of the program to allow them to adopt an animal from the crowded shelters, so these individuals will not be lonely.
Dude i would legit watch queenie and her trainer. They are so interesting to watch and he trained her so well like my dog cant do half the stuff she can
I would gladly have my tax dollars go to funding more programs like this.

Am 100% in favor of making inmate/animal socializing programs available everywhere.
