Good interview! I identify with this lady’s philosophy of life, and as a result I don’t hang out with many people my age (76).
My normal bike loop takes me 30 miles along the coast and it’s invigorating. The secret is “age doesn’t matter” whether you ride 12mph or 18mph or bench press 50 or 150. Stay after it and have fun. We’re all going to die so don’t do it in your recliner.👍

I'm proud to be in the same sport as you, I'm 77, 78 in Sept,, I hide 50 to 70+ miles a week, year round outdoors, mostly on MTB, gravel in winter, some Fat bike, I just got a Dirt Jumper and ride pump tracks, I have a Opafiets Dutch bike for errands, I work on 2 mountain bike trails, and one connector that is harder then one of our trails that I work on, there is over 60 miles of trails on these connected trails, These are the most popular trails in lower Michigan, very hilly, 3 min up 1 down, never rest. I ride 2 to 3 hrs non stop there a few times a week, I am looking forward to racing again, in 80 n over class in 2 yrs.. I just had my first crash in years, at the start of a ride, I didn't clip in good, I landed on my shoulder hard, after a jump, nothing broke, I still heal fast, I'll be back out tomorrow trimming the trail, and riding, thats 3 days after the crash, I rode an hour after the crash, I even got my very first KOM on strava on that ride. I'm an ex dirt bike racer, an lots of other hard sports, and work. I've been riding MTB for 40 yrs, I really stated riding a lot at 60 an retired at 62. As a fellow 75 yr. old mtb rider I think the main reason people our age don't stay in shape is the societal norm (especially in the US) that it's acceptable/expected to get fat & stop doing active physical sports past 40. How many fit 75 yr. old do you see...almost none, mainly because people just think they can't (BS). To be cruel, it's probably your own fault if you're a physical wreck. Sorry, there is NOTHING more important than your own health (you can't provide for your family in the hospital).
I started cycling as off season training for motocross racing in my 20s. When mtb became a thing in the late '80s it was just natural to transition & for the next 30 years that's what I did..consistently. 5 years ago e-bikes came along & now that's what I do 4 days/week.
I've never been out of shape & have never had any medical issues because of eating healthfully & always having cycling for exercise & stress relief. I have 50+ years of riding in the woods so I'm pretty comfortable still scaring myself. The lesson I've learned is that unless you have some physical disability, as long as you are out there regularly, there is no reason to not keep pushing yourself.

A lot of wisdom in this interview. I like when she talked about being more centered as you get older. Though I would add as someone who works with a lot of older folks that Wisdom with age is not a given. It takes work. Someone who works on themselves throughout their life becomes for centered and gains wisdom as Betty reflects. But I've certainly encountered plenty of people who have become just stubborn and anchored in their ways with age and have not gained that sense of centeredness.
Betty you are so amazing! So grateful to have people out there like yourself to show us one of the many pathways and possibilities of how to keep moving forward in life.

My advice from age 52 and 2 injuries after 20 yrs riding, is ride what you enjoy and can handle, be aware of the area, meaning if you do fall how bad is the area you could crash in , how bad could you get hurt. I’m recovering from my 2nd injury of a broken ankle, I was going down steep turn at about 4-5mph and I had to dab my foot on the ground for a second but my foot got stuck in a rut , so 2 seconds and my ankle broke. Huge thanks to my buddies that help get out of there not being able to walk. During recovery I thought back to my 20’s when I never got hurt, because it was blue terrain little more difficult than cross country. But now in my 40’s-52 I’m riding a much better bike but now on double blue trails and black diamond.

Seventy next year. Finally fully retired this year. I am riding twice a week with a group I started over thirty years ago. We are still getting better at riding. I have always said I ride for my brain and the physical aspect was a fortunate by product. I am also going back and learning many of the licks and leads from the guitar gods of my youth. Keeping my brain going, my mother died of vascular dementia so the risk factors are in my genes. A lot of what Betty said in another vid was about brain plasticity, it applies in a very similar way to both MTB and Guitar.
The other thing I did was make sure I have enough of a section of land to keep me busy, we grow a lot of vegetables and the new fruit trees are starting to provide. You see a lot of people retire and talk about sizing down the home. We did the opposite and bought a larger place. As long as the health holds out and we are banking on at least another ten years we plan on keeping physically busy challenging both mind and body, the soul comes along for the ride.

Betty is awesome and a way, way better rider than I am--- I have to keep my wheels on the ground 😂 My wife and I started riding (only MTB) in late 2019 when I was age 57. Now approaching 63 and 5 years since starting and it's one of the best decisions we've ever made. The heath and psychological benefits have been profound. We take trips now to ride and explore places we never thought of before. Also before I started riding MTB I used to get a little depressed at the end of ski season and now that I mountain bike I don't get that anymore. My kids and friends thought we were crazy to risk injury but they don't know what they're missing! Yeah okay I went over the bars last year and broke my hand but it beats the risk of not riding and being healthy. We just got E-MTB's and can keep up with stronger much younger riders without killing ourselves. So much more distance and vert in our rides with more exploration and fun that would otherwise be difficult. So much fun! Oh and I didn't start downhill skiing until I was in my early 40s--- another superb life decision😁 Bottom line as you both said, keep playing and learning.:

God says this: Find something you love to do, and do that. I have been cycling ever since 2 years of age and as getting older my like of it has changed from Mountain Biking to Hybrid riding, to Road Cycling (which I really enjoyed due to LONGER DISTANCE TRAVELING) back to Mountain Biking to Now; Bike Touring :) I enjoy seeing new sights, drowning among the natural landscapes, getting away from Large cities that are often found filled with craziness, getting fresh air, hearing the birds sing and sounds of other animals and praying to God. I love the sense of FLYING when riding fast along with the Challenge of telling myself: You are a great bike rider if you do not crash :).
I was told that a dedicated bike rider usually crashes about every 10,000 miles or so. As a trail hunter I always seek out areas that contain the least amount of traffic where I can ride freely and not have to worry about car drivers. (back in 2008: I was hit head on by a car driver...ouch).
The best part of cycling is exercise (relieves stress among many other ailments) and the ability to TRAVEL at NO COST! (compared to traveling by Car). There are many BENEFITS to riding a bike.
I hope many lives will discover what they are.
Darren Alff as a past Bike Tourist said this; Living like a millionaire...
I am one that shares BIKE FRAME DESIGN development with the hopes that engineers will build new bike frames as such for the older generations.
That is what I currently have; one traditional bike and one ebike, but my e-bike is not a HUB drive, it is a MID DRIVE and this system has the rider having to make use of their bike gear; you have to pedal with a MID MOTOR e-bike. I like them because it allows me to go up hills much quicker :)

I had a dramatic crash in a mountain bike race last year with a pedal strike at 62 . Broke myltiple ribs which resulted in the window maker the pulmonary embolism around christmas . Got back on the bike in febuary . Just came off blood thinners . I took second in a race a few weeks before so that could have made a bit vulnerable being a bit tired and a loss of focus . You cannot drop your gaurd in mtb. I am transforming my hardtail into a ridged fork bike . Most at my age are not goung into a direction of no suspension but i have been curious about that for sometime being more in contact witt the earth on the bike .
