I am the one who interviewed Charlie here in this video. I think it was in 2010, so I was only 13 years old. I had a deep appreciation for racing history, especially of the North Georgia area. Many of these old guys took me 'under their wing' so to speak as how many pre-teens were interested in old racing? Charlie was exceptional to me, not only here in this video but up until he passed. I was honored to have been a pall bearer at his funeral in 2016. Also, I totally understand that Charlie made this interview. But I just want to note this was probably the second time I had ever done any type of interview. It was a spur of the moment thing - "Here, go take this camera and talk to Charlie". I miss Charlie and dozens of others from his era. The stories that he and others could tell were unmatched. He was one of the biggest supporters to us at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame here in Dawsonville. We still have a display case with some highlights of his accomplishments, and yes, we have had his 39' on display at various times before.

The Moonshine Festival is usually the third weekend in October. It just keeps growing each year. I saw a report once stating there had been 150,000 people there at one event. Never seen that many 40 Fords in my life.
Papaw had a 40 springs stiff and load was what made it to Knox from the Mountains of NC he told me that 19E going down was the worst part brakes sucked and the trees where tight to the road ..W.S. Tucker R.I.P.
My mother hauled moonshine in Nashville back in the day, when she was only 18. She was very pretty and prim and proper so she flew under the police radar. Back then she was Ramona Watkins; she would later become Ramona Burnett, the wife of a Nashville police officer. She also went on to become the country's first Weather Girl on WCPO in Cincinnati (like I said, she was very pretty), but before then she was poor after her father, a doctor, had died. So fifty dollars to drive a Chevy with "special suspension" in the rear to a specific alleyway, park it and lock the doors and trunk, sit through the movie in the nearby theater, and then drive the car (with a much-higher rear now) back home and park it, was an easy decision for her. This was around 1950, just before she went into television and met my father. She said that Chevy was a monster. At normal RPMs for normal street driving the engine sounded a little like it needed a new muffler, but nothing to attract police attention, she said. But once she punched it, it was like Godzilla banged his shin on a sharp object and all hell broke loose. The Local Boys chose her also because she could drive like a bat out of hell if the cops chased her, which they never did. This was put to the test much later in her life when, at ten years old, I was bleeding from a giant gash in my wrist made by a rusty cat food can lid when I was pushing down a bag of garbage into the garbage can outside. She drove her MGBGT sports car like a mad woman and got me to the hospital faster than an ambulance could have arrived at our house. It was serious Race Day Point Of View stuff, and damn exciting, even though I was also afraid of dying with that bloody washcloth wrapped around my wrist. She was one hell of a mother. Bought me a submachine gun for my high school graduation present (ATF Form 4'ed it to herself because I was not yet 21, and had to be with me whenever I fired it until I transferred it to myself later on) and a Smith and Wesson Model 29 .44 Magnum for my 19th birthday present. Thank goodness I was responsible enough! She wouldn't have if I hadn't been. Anyway, if you want to see my mother and father, they are featured in the book Cincinnati Television by Jim Friedman. She's listed as Ramona Burnett and he as Bud Chase (his Goyisher television name, since they didn't much like Jews in television back then.
used to watch him race at Senoia Ga. speedway in the late 70's against Leon Archer #222, Mike Head #54, Roscoe Smith #44, Doug Kennimer #42, Charlie Bagwell #U2, Dub Meeler , Charlie Hughes etc. Great memories !
In 1991 I wrote the race reports for North Georgia Speedway in Springplace. I remember Mike Head and Charles Hughes as being front runners.whichever winner had the best story got the lead even if it was the mini stock class. All these guys weren’t just great competitors they were quite aware that their sponsors liked to see their names in print so after their race they would hunt me up to tell me of their trials snd tribulations in preparing for the race.
I remember hanging out at Mike Heads garage on Anvil Block Rd. outside Rex Ga. Working on his car and his cousin making everyone bologna sandwiches. If I remember correctly Mike Head was a stunt driver in several movies made in Ga. during the 70's.

It's good that you can respect your elders because they do have a lot to bring to the table that you know you may want to know and if they have and you just need to ask him. I'm almost 64 and my son is 42. I still know more about what he owns and drives but he's catching up quick because I simply don't care as much as I used to. But it is very nice when my son comes and asks me about an issue with his car and we can discuss it. That makes me feel useful and that is very special to this this old man. So, to recap, we're basically talking about a neck and neck race with the v8-equipped Feds, with a 200lb load of shine, on crap roads, at night, with leaf spring suspension, those weird little torsion shocks, crap headlights, *bias ply tires* and no pesky seatbelts or roll cages or sissy safety glass or padded steering wheels, at speeds over 100mph *while getting shot at*. Sweet baby jesus that sounds absolutely terrifying.
Oh this guy is a piece of history! Way to go Charlie! Talking about getting a jump on the cops on Highway 9 which runs S/N through Dawsonville, then ditching on the backroads! Check your satellite maps, I can imagine that wow!

Yes...it would have been a Ford Flathead V8...some of those shine runners would soup up a Mercury or Lincoln Flathead because of the longer stroke on the motors ......I love how Mr. Mincey added the more heavy duty Lincoln gears....and a 2 speed differential to boot.... Love it....they were very innovative. ..
This reminds me of the time my grandfather told me about a moonshine run he did with a truck after Vietnam for his friend he met at war that lived in virgina to get a little extra cash but he never really talked about it because shortly after that happened he became a cop in nj never did it again he says the pay was so good he almost did another run.

Dawsonville (pop ~ 3,000) is the county seat of Dawson County, GA, about 45 miles north of Atlanta and halfway to the TN/NC borders ha! Didn’t cops have to stop at the state lines? Charlie must have lots of stories! 🤣👌🏼
Charlie must have made good money running shine! Had to have been super expensive to modify a stock 40 Ford into a moonshine car. The thing was totally tricked out, engine, suspension, transmission, tires. He didn't talk about the breaks, but they must have been built too. Pretty impressive, plus you had to know how to drive!
He spent a lot of money to. Taking place in the late 40's and fifties, those cars were old and cheap , junk yard parts were cheap. Just needed the labor. That's what made them good Racers. They knew there cars and how to drive them.
True. You can do anything thing you wanted to them cars only 2 hold backs. Dont make it stand out "flashy" at all & Money to buy parts. Some them cars went superchargers & turbos ect. Old amblance 500 cu in was highly wanted. Jr. Was ask 1 day if Ford came down to help him few weeks back. No they came down so I would help them.
Moonrunners always ran Fords. Chevys and Pontiacs just couldn't hold up on those back country roads. Later on they went to Mopars for speed and durability, but from 1925-1965 you didn't see a moonshine hauler that didn't have a blue oval on it.
Marvin Harrison Smith II cheap to build and modify. that is why more Ford's were used. also because you could find parts for them at a yard sale. common as a turd back then. mopars were only used by the upper class hillbillies and purchasers who didn't want to lose loads. they would stick those shit heads in real cars.
Ford was the only one of the big three who had a mass produced V8 engine from 1932 until the Oldsmobile Rocket V8 came out in 1949 and the Chrysler Hemi came out in 1951 I believe. Chevy and Pontiac didnt come out with their first V8 until 1955. Many bootleggers would pull the original Ford Flathead V8 and drop in a V8 from a Cadillac ambulance. In 1966 when the Chrysler 426 Street Hemi came out it became an instant favorite of moonshiners... Especially when it came in the taxicab looking 66 Dodge Coronet/Plymouth Belvedere...The ultimate sleeper in my opinion
I wish you would have ask about the money part of moonshining. His part of the money. Because it was hard times and he was rich compared to the non-moonshiners
This interview was done just about right. Charley certainly is a most gracious subject. The interviewer managed themselves in order to pull this off without asking or saying too many dumb things. Charley is way cool tho, and the interview ended with the results being well done.

Everyone outside the law had a flathead Ford V8. The cops couldn't afford them and in most cases cops had to buy their own cars and not much at the time could catch them when they were tuned,
Guess I got a moonshine car too, but it's really not documented... 1922 t6... revinurers confiscated my car, and it spent 40 yrs in govt warehouse ..., then went in public auction...

Ford was the horsepower king by default from 1932 until about 1949...when Oldsmobile and Cadillac released their first OHV V8's
