    The PDI06 itself does not cause any loss of high frequencies. In certain situations and settings a tonal change can be noticed, this is however mainly due to the general application (speaker gets less power, human hearing is not linear etc.). Some of our competitors have a high frequency boost to try and compensate this phenomenon. We opted against this option to keep the signal path clean and not mess with the signal itself at all.

    For this setup we suggest using the Palmer PDI03 (which is to our knowledge also what Eddie uses). The PDI03 has 4 line outs with an adjustable level - you can feed one of these to your effects and then go on from there to your second amp.

  • @PalmerGermany
    @PalmerGermany  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Not necessarily.
    Usually though you want to involve preamp and poweramp saturation when you are recording so it does make sense to take the output of the power amp, load it with a power attenuator or load box and pass a speaker simulated signal on to your recording device. The PDI03 for example is a load box and simulator in one unit.

  • @PalmerGermany
    @PalmerGermany  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you can only access the preamp out then you don’t need a PDI06 - this is for power amp outs. All you need then is a speaker simulator such as our PDI09. In this setup your speaker will keep running at full volume.

  • @PalmerGermany
    @PalmerGermany  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Connect in the following way: output amplifier to PDI09 input, Thru Out PDI09 into PDI06, PDI 06 to cabinet. Use speaker cable for all connections, XLR out PDI09 to recording system use balanced mic cable. Start with an attenuator setting (PDI09) -30dB. In case the signal from the XLR out is still too strong, you can insert the PDI09 between PDI06 and cabinet as well. If you need a completely unfiltered DI out then replace the PDI09 by a normal passive DI such as our PAN01, PAN01PRO or PDI01.

    Hi Jonathan,
    it depends on how loud your amp + speaker would be normally. It would be 18% as loud as the normal loudness.

  • @PalmerGermany
    @PalmerGermany  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Elias,
    Cant really suggest anything as it is impedance mismatching. If you have been using this setup successfully in the past, then we would suggest using an 8 Ohms Version of the PDI06. Then the setup will remain unchanged. Using a 4 Ohm unit will also work, at least the amp will then see the impedances it wants to see, however - the attenuator levels will be messed up and will not attenuate at the correct percentages (in some settings louder than usual and in others quieter) - Suboptimal.

  • @ZajoSTi
    @ZajoSTi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Definitely going to buy this. Love the simplicity. One question if I might - let's say I have it on 50% reduction. Is it reduction in dB ( ~ minus 10 dB), or in power ( ~ minus 3 dB)?

    Finalmente qualcuno che fa vedere come si collegano i cavi!!!

  • @PalmerGermany
    @PalmerGermany  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    So the DI is there to split the signal out to a suitable level for mixing consoles or interfaces and the PDI06 is there to make sure the tube amp is correctly loaded.

  • @PalmerGermany
    @PalmerGermany  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The alternative is to modify the amp and mount a speaker socket. This is fairly easy - you just need to follow the cable going to the speaker, disconnect it from there and connect it to a jack socket. You also need to equip the speaker with a jack plug. When you want to run the cab with its own speaker, then connect the jack plug of the speaker with the socket.

  • @tollerest

    i got one , its good, basically you can have the gain on 10 and volume on 8 + and still have it at room level, but what he means about speaker working hard enough is that at room level the speaker isn't moving much so you still want to attenuate it at a bit above room level for the speaker to be bouncing around to sound best but not at concert level ;D, also i advise muting valve amps before switching the load selector because, for a millisecond it disconnects the load between positions, and this can damage your amp. luckily i just blew a fuse when i found out.
    I use my clean channel on high gain and load in line with distortion pedal and modulation/delay, sounds awesome recommended if you have a valve amp where volume never goes above 1

  • @jonmarklar8228
    @jonmarklar8228 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My experience of using this is you can't crank your amp for bedroom practise. Using a 15W Dark Terror with the attenuator on 18%, I can get the amp up to 2 or 3 on the volume dial with the gain turned right up, compared to 1 without the attenuator. That's if I'm trying to be a respectful neighbour. It's more useful for band practise in a rehearsal room etc..

    • @ertreri
      @ertreri 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes you cannot. 18 percent pf power is soaking a lot of wattage true. but the fatal flaw is that cabs are highly efficient and at 1 watt see for example the marshall 1dsl are already louder than the subway. so bedroom practice means sending less than 1 watt to thr speaker. you need that -30 to -40 of your floor and walls is enough to make th noise close to 60 db to tour neighbors. also playing anove 85 db constantly will damage your ears. so the artenuators need to muchmmore agressive in allowing you to work in the eange of 0.1 watt to 1 wattage for bedroom practice

    • @PalmerGermany
      @PalmerGermany  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's true - in many cases (with many amps) even the maximum reduction is still quite loud. It's always a matter of definition what "room level" means ;)

  • @PalmerGermany
    @PalmerGermany  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you want to use a loadbox, connect this to the socket instead of a speaker. If you want to use a power soak (attenuator), then loop it in the signal path - i.e. Jack socket to the input of the power soak, speaker out of the power soak to the speaker. Remember though, a tube amp without a suitable load/speaker can break - so you need to know what you are doing.

    Da mit einer Box oft nicht sehr zimperlich umgegangen wird ist es nicht unwahrscheinlich dass die Konstruktion oder die Elektronik in Mitleidenschaft gezogen wird. Nicht falsch verstehen, die PDI06 kann ruhig vertikal betrieben werden, wenn man aber vor der Wahl steht dann ist der vorgesehene horizontale Betrieb besser und sicherer.

  • @tienshinhane
    @tienshinhane 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Could this be used as a load instead of a speaker cabinet? For example, connect my amp head to the PDI 06 via the speaker out, set it to 'Load Box' setting, and then connect my head via the FX Send to my interface for direct recording?

  • @PalmerGermany
    @PalmerGermany  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi, yes it can be used as a full load as you describe.
    Cheers!

  • @PalmerGermany
    @PalmerGermany  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Vertikale Montage würde ich wenn möglich vermeiden. Zum einen wegen der Kühlung (Wärme steigt nach oben) und zum anderen strapaziert dies die Konstruktion mehr. Die Elektronik und die Kühlkörper liegen horizontal im Gerät und werden unten von metall-Distanzbolzen festgehalten, wird das Gerät vertikal transportiert können sich höhere Schwerkräfte entwickeln und im allerschlimmsten Fall reißen die Bolzen ab (was im horizontalen Betrieb nicht der Fall wäre).

    It is very good product which easily substitutes some other products.
    But I think the only negative side is that the unit has no direct output.
    I have a PDI09 and started to think about buying a PDI06 too but I need an extra unfiltered direct out to use some cool cabinet IRs. That's why I can't decide.

    If you want to divert the amps output signal to your interface (in order to do speaker simulation in your DAW) then you need to use a DI-Box in addition. The signal chain would be: Amp out => DI input, DI Thru out => PDI06 in. If you are playing at higher wattages then you may have to untilize the DI-Boxes input attenuator switch (otherwise the DIs transformer may distort).

    So if I want to connect AMP->PALMER->IR loader, then I assume the Palmer needs to be in LOAD BOX mode, but should the switch in that case be in bypass mode or attenuator? I basically only want to use the load box and then take that signal and send it to stand alone IR loader.

    I think is one of great loadbox, set at a resonance price. But in the video you see how inconvenient it is to place on the amp because of the handle. This is something all, not just Plamer, manufacturers of amp gear overlook. Why not have higher rubber feets? Or there could have been an extra set of higher feets that you could choose to screw on the unit.

    you say it takes up to 200w, but everywhere on the internet it's stated that it goes to 150w. that's kinda important... which one is it? i'd need it for an old OR120 which goes higher than 120w. thanks!

    • @PalmerGermany
      @PalmerGermany  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The PDI06 is tested and approved for (at least) 120W power handling. The old OR120 is rated at 120 Watts maximum power (this is only when preamp and power amp are fully turned up), so the PDI06 is suitable. You may notice the PDI06 producing some low level noise, this is normal and nothing to be concerned about. ;)

    I purchased the 8ohm variant of this i have it between my 120w bugera 333 and my 2x12 cab. I can barely turn the master volume up to 3 with the load set to 18% output. bought it so i could crank the amp and keep it at low volume for practice in the house. what could the problem be ? i even tried it with the same cab and my Blackstar ht5 and it doesnt seem to attenuate as much as it should

    • @PalmerGermany
      @PalmerGermany  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The problem here is that the volume controls of most amps are not linear, but actually have roughly 90% of their range happening on the first 20% of the turn range. The PDI06 does actually attennuate quite a lot, you will notice the difference when switching to "bypass" and back when on the 18% position. If there is no difference audible, then the unit would actually be defective.
      If you would like to play almost silently, youcan also switch the PDI06 to "load box" while still having the cab attached. This will be the least loud setting. While in "load box" mode, you can also detach the cab, to play completely silent.

    Hi, im pretty close to buying one of your units but i do have a question.
    I have a mesa 5:50 combo 1x12. with 1, 8ohm speaker. The amp itself has a 3 way selector switch that goes from 5 - 25 - 50 watts.
    Would this unit be able to support that? I am a little confused as to how the resistance is halved when you plug in 2 cabinets.
    does that just mean that it is shared over 2 outputs or i need my speaker to be rated at 16 ohms?

    • @PalmerGermany
      @PalmerGermany  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have the PDI06 8 ohms version, the total load needs to be 8 Ohms. So if you are using your combo with no additional speaker, this would be exactly the right unit to use.
      When connecting two cabinets to the PDI06, they both need to be rated at 16 ohms, which will result in a total load of 8 ohms.

    • @PalmerGermany

      Generally, yes. But please do keep in mind that even if set to 100% load (silenced), there will still be some output from The PDI06, since this unit is equipped with an analog heater-load. So, depending on the input volume, there might be some audible output from your cabinet, or even the PDI06 itself. Cheers!

    i have the feeling that a power attenuator must allow to configure all the way to 100 attenuation. at 1 watt we know that already the neighbors will call the police and hate you because 1 watt into a cabinet already makes more than 100 db. for playing in a bedroom you need to attenuate to the point your neighbors know you are plying light and politely and they can endure your partice session. 18 % of 50 watts is still way too loud for playing at home. of course you can limit the master volume in the amplifier but still to you are force to tame too much the master volume. i prefer a control of power reduction sililar to spl or bugera where you put it as low as you want. people do not realize that at 1 watt your amp is already crazy loud and the increase in decibels is exponentially slow. you need to multiply by ten the wattage for a 10 decibel increase. a 100 way amplifier is only 10 decibels louder than 10 watt amp. so yeah bedroom level playing means you need to get the volume in the room well bellow the 100 db and that means less than 1 watt into the can which means 18 percent attenuation is a lot of wattage reduction but not nearly enough

    This would not be safe for the amp nor the interface! The PDI06 only has speaker outputs. If you connect your interface to these outputs then the amp will not see the correct load and you may also damage your interface! If you have nothing (no speaker) connected to the outputs of the PDI06 then you need to be sure to have it set to Loadbox and that the Bypass is off.
