I think the point being made in Hebrews is that Jesus was both King and High Priest "according to the order of Melchizadek". So there wasn't two Messiahs, but one Messiah filling two roles.
Jesus was the Word in the beginning of this promise to Abraham. Genesis 18:1 The Lord appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day. 2 Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground. 3 He said, “If I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by. 4 Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree. Genesis 18:17 Then the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do? 18 Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him. 19 For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him. John 8:54 Jesus answered: “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, the one who you say is your God. 55 Yet you have not known him, but I know him. And if I said I do not know him, I would be like you, a liar. But I do know him and am observing his word. 56 Abraham your father rejoiced greatly at the prospect of seeing my day, and he saw it and rejoiced.” 57 Then the Jews said to him: “You are not yet 50 years old, and still you have seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them: “Most truly I say to you, before Abraham came into existence, I have been.” 59 So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid and went out of the temple. Genesis 14:18 And Mel·chizʹe·dek king of Saʹlem brought out bread and wine; he was priest of the Most High God. 19 Then he blessed him and said: “Blessed be Aʹbram by the Most High God,Maker of heaven and earth; 20 And praised be the Most High God, Who has handed your oppressors over to you!” And Aʹbram gave him a tenth of everything. King Melchizedek was Jesus . By being King and Priest to Abraham the priest hood could be in the line of Judah. Where Jesus is also the Lion of the tribe of Judah. Revelation 5:5 But one of the elders said to me: “Stop weeping. Look! The Lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, has conquered so as to open the scroll and its seven seals.”
@strappedfatman7858 Jesus is the tribe of Joseph. Jacob saw Yahweh on top of the ladder woke up said he saw the house of Yahweh which wasn't a literal temple building but who he will be than Jacob poured oil on the stone it represented the messiah. It is said of Joseph in Genesis 49/24 from the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel. John 8/58 before Abraham appears I am. . . It's speaking on resurrection
Jesus is from Judah. Hebrews 7:14 For it is clear that our Lord has descended from Judah, yet Moses said nothing about priests coming from that tribe. Jesus is the indestructible life. He was King and Priest. From the beginning. Hebrews 7:12 For since the priesthood is being changed, it becomes necessary to change the Law as well. 13 For the man about whom these things are said came from another tribe, from which no one has officiated at the altar. 14 For it is clear that our Lord has descended from Judah, yet Moses said nothing about priests coming from that tribe. 15 And this becomes even clearer when another priest arises who is like Mel·chizʹe·dek, 16 who has become such, not by the legal requirement that depends on fleshly descent, but by the power of an indestructible life.
@strappedfatman7858 cool if you know Hebrews 7/14 you should know Paul knows Jeremiah 8/8 and caught the lying pen of the scribes...Moses wrote Genesis and a lawgiver is of the priesthood which Paul said Moses spoke nothing of that tribe Genesis 49/The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor a lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes; And to Him shall be the obedience of the people. Moses spoke nothing concerning the priesthood about Joseph not the lie Judah keep studying a conspiracy is found in Judah Jeremiah 11/9 the sin of Judah the iron pen Jeremiah 17/1....iron doesn't mix with clay the birthright is Joseph's and receiving that truth will be a sign between your eyes and on your right hand God will be written on your forehead or the beast if you do not receive the truth those who love the truth receive it

I am blown away by Dr Tabor's knowledge, especially these small gems such as that Mary visited Elizabeth the mother of John the baptist and that therefore John and Jesus knew each other from an early age!
Hello - John the Baptist is revealed as one of the Initiates of the Mystery Schools, as are many of the other Disciples (including the two Marys) on the Mount of Olives during the Higher Teachings of Jesus in The Pistis Sophia. It is a Gnostic text, and must be interpreted in that context. Blessings - RevDrD
I love how James Tabor infuriates the fundamentalists and the mythicists at the same time ha. Fundamentalists will get on here and proclaim Tabor is lost and repeat dogma to quiet their cognitive dissonance while mythicists will be upset and say Tabor is some literal Bible believer. Who do you say James Tabor is? I say a good scholar.
I could not agree more. Anyone who is so rooted in their belief to get angry, and be upset at someone who doesn't agree with them just seem foolish. I rather enjoy reading their angry replies.
Most shocking thing about this video is Dr Tabor's age! I struggle to believe it! Perhaps he found a fountain of youth out there in the Judean wilderness.
I really like all your new content. But I appreciate your own work more than the ones you do with the myth busters guy. It just feels like that brings it down a notch. My two cents. Your own videos are scholarly and well thought through.

Jesus modelled the extent of humility required before God by holding John up in such esteem. By getting baptized by John he models the importance of this sacrament which gifts humans the Grace of the Holy. Spirit.
There’s clearly two men leading the movement as long as Jesus’ family is alive; Jesus and John the Immerser, James and Judah Thaddeus, James and Menahem Ben Judah, and finally James and Simon bar Giora. James dies shortly before Simon starts the war in 70. (The rabbi’s seem to last longer than the generals, for obvious reasons)

John the Baptizer speaking: Matthew 3:11 I, for my part, baptize you with water because of your repentance, but the one coming after me (ie Jesus, the Messiah) is stronger than I am, whose sandals I AM NOT WORTHY TO TAKE OFF. That one will baptize you with holy spirit and with fire. John 3:30 That one (ie Jesus) must keep on increasing, but I must keep on decreasing.” Unfortunately, John the prophetic Elijah (Malachi 4:5), wasn't around to become a member of God's Kingdom rulers. Jesus' words: Matthew 11:11 Truly I say to you, among those born of women, there has not been raised up anyone greater than John the Baptist, but a lesser person in the Kingdom of the heavens is greater than he is. John the Baptizer would be among those resurrected on earth (Acts 24:15). He will be told of what happened after his death.

Thank you Dr Tabor and Derek. On Isa 53 being seen as a suffering and dying Messianic figure can I draw your attention to G J B Sulman’s book ‘Facts, Fiction and the Bible’ Ch20 where he proposes that it was written about the execution of Zerubbabel as governor of Yehud, by the Persian King Darius I for putting on the dignities of a king and believing the messianic branch prophecies of Haggai and Zechariah (which included riding into Jerusalem on an ass rather than in a chariot. The death of one man who gave himself to trial and execution prevented the returned community from being destroyed by the Persians as rebels. Whether Jesus (and John the Immerser?) thought of Zerubbabel as a type of the ‘suffering kind of Messiah’ (the ‘messiah of Joseph’ as some Jewish writers wrote of, and one way their own stories might go) is a now a possible question. Thank you, Dr. G. Craig Fairweather.
Allow me to share with you the Jewish interpretation: *Isaiah 53 Does not speak of the Messiah* *The servant is Israel* Chapter 53 is the fourth of four servant songs in the book of Isaiah It deals with the remnant of Israel not all Israel, the ones who will stay faithful to GOD. *See Zephaniah 3: 12-13* But I will leave within you the meek and humble. The *remnant of Israel will trust in the name of the Lord.* 13 They will do no wrong; they will tell no lies. A deceitful tongue will not be found in their mouths. They will eat and lie down and no one will make them afraid.” *In all the servant songs in Isaiah the servant is Israel! not the messiah and certainly not JC.* *Isaiah 41:8-9* “But you, *Israel, my servant, Jacob* , whom I have chosen, you *descendants of Abraham* my friend, 9 I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me. 11 I, even I, am the Lord, and *apart from me there is no savior.* *Isaiah 44:1-2* But now listen, *Jacob, my servant, Israel, whom I have chosen.* 2 This is what the Lord says- he who made you, who formed you in the womb, and who will help you: Do not be afraid, *Jacob, my servant,* Jeshurun,[a] whom I have chosen. *Isaiah 44:2* “Remember these things, *Jacob, for you, Israel, are my servant.* I have made you, *you are my servant; Israel* , I will not forget you. *Isaiah 45:4* For the sake of *Jacob my servant, of Israel my chosen,* I summon you by name and bestow on you a title of honor, though you do not acknowledge me. *Isaiah 48:20* Leave Babylon, flee from the Babylonians! Announce this with shouts of joy and proclaim it. Send it out to the ends of the earth; say, “The Lord has redeemed *his servant Jacob.”* *Isaiah 49:3* He said to me, *“You are my servant, Israel,* in whom I will display my splendor.” *Isaiah 53 - Explanation* The speakers in this chapter are the nations. @@PazPinhasRahamim9220 Thank you Paz! My point/suggestion is NOT that ISAIAH 53 is meant by the author of Isaiah to be Jesus or the Messiah. There is some evidence that some Jews thought of some phrases from it as referring coming figure whose suffering would lead to benefit to Israed, This figure was called the Messiah of Joseph.Martyrdom that leads to blessing on Israel is a concept familiar from the Book of Maccabees. It is possible that Jesus could have wondered if he would be this kind of figure. Not that this was a justified.interpretation.
@@craigfairweather3401 Hi Craig. Isiah 53 does not speak a single figure as can be understood from a single word 'them' in verse 8 as I've demonstrated in my explanation. Messiah son if Joseph is mentioned in Zachariah 12, and he will die in a battle.
Even though there were many kings and priests who were anointed, Jesus was the first one who was anointed by the Holy Spirit, he was the real Messiah because God the Father placed His Spirit into him. Jesus was not a follower of John the Baptizer, on the other hand John was the messenger before the coming of the lamb of God.
God is 'spirit' all of them... He is the 'like us' of Genesis. Man was not supposed to be separated from Eve - He made THEM, and called THEM 'Adam' (singular). The woman is 'inside' of every man... the woman who defiles us, by causing us to defy the rule of God. Her 'seed' is actually (2) - male or female... her 'desire' (nothing is made that will ever be made without a desire to make it) is for 'him'... and thus as God makes and uses either good or evil (Isaiah 45:7) if you do what is right, then it is 'accepted'. I'm looking for students... we have a lot of work to do. Shalom.
Galatians 3:13 (KJV) Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: I hope someone can explain it to me
I believe Jesus was trying to get rid of plaguing superstition in general and the "curse of the law", which people were having great trouble following. Jesus was reflecting back to everyone, that there is nothing that the Christ "Kingdom of Heaven" cannot overcome even curses and ultimately death.
@@bpprovit I believe that Paul saying that, what is the curse that we have? And why Paul described Jesus a curse, or Jesus never crucified because he is not a curse, I don't know my thoughts ONLY
When you search engine "Why is there a curse associated with hanging on a tree?" ...This is just a portion of what is stated... "Under the Mosaic Law, those who were hanged on a tree were cursed. The law made it illegal to leave the body hanging overnight. This law applied to Jesus, who was executed on a tree, although He had done no wrong. Jesus’ dead body was removed from the cross on the same day of His death and was buried. Jesus took the curse of sin upon Himself to redeem us from sin."
@@bpprovit what you saying contradict Jesus saying in John 15:24 (KJV) If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father. There's no such thing original sin, he didn't have to die for nobody.
This may help. The 'US' is in reference to the Jews. The apostle argues: “If a law had been given that was able to give life, righteousness would actually have been by means of law.” (Ga 3:21) Now, the Jews, being condemned by the Law, were not only shown to be sinners as offspring of Adam but were also under an additional disability. For this reason, Christ died on a torture stake. As Paul says: “Christ by purchase released us (the Jews) from the curse of the Law by becoming a curse instead of us, because it is written: ‘Accursed is every man hanged upon a stake.’” (Ga 3:13) By removing this obstacle, namely, the curse brought on the Jews by their breaking of the Law, Jesus Christ removed this barrier to life for the Jews, giving them opportunity for life. His ransom could thus benefit them as well as others. Matthew 20:28 Just as the Son of man came, not to be ministered to, but to minister and to give his life as a RANSOM in exchange for many.”
All elect Sons are a kingly priesthood in the new covenant of the order of Melchzadok. There was no two messiahs. There are two STICKS that become ONE. The word "Christian" originated as a pejorative because to outsiders it was a shameful embarrassment that their "founder" died like that. To call a follower of Jesus a "Christian" in the early period was an insult. At some point in the 1st century it started becoming a self-identification.
A bit disingenuous to brush over Psalm 22 as if Jesus only just understood it moments after John was beheaded, as describing a crucifixion. At least 10 years he fought that battle. Unlike John the baptist, who was only a created man, Jesus was the Creator in the flesh. As per prophesy, John was simply there to prepare the way for Jesus. John said of Jesus "behold the Lamb that takes away the sin of the world" and "who's shoe buckle I am not worthy to undo". John was following Jesus, not the other way around.
YHWH is the creator. Didn't Jesus say He has a God. YHWH is the God of Jesus. True! Except that Jesus was not the Creator. He assisted God in creation (Proverbs 8:22-30). He was in his angelic spirit form when God spoke and said: "Let US make man in OUR image." - Genesis 1:26. John 5:19 Therefore, in response Jesus said to them: “Most truly I say to you, THE SON CANNOT DO A SINGLE THING OF HIS OWN INITIATIVE, but only what he sees the Father doing. There isn't a lot of evidence to prove that Jesus existed historically, but there is a historical record of another Jewish king being crucified: Antigonus II Mattathias. Accoeding to the Roman historical record no other king was killed this way by the Romans. So maybe the Jesus story was partially a re-write of the Antigonus story.

I think the point being made in Hebrews is that Jesus was both King and High Priest "according to the order of Melchizadek". So there wasn't two Messiahs, but one Messiah filling two roles.
The whole book of Hebrews speaks of the coming one
19 Then he blessed him and said: “Blessed be Aʹbram by the Most High God,Maker of heaven and earth; 20 And praised be the Most High God,
Who has handed your oppressors over to you!”
And Aʹbram gave him a tenth of everything.
King Melchizedek was Jesus . By being King and Priest to Abraham the priest hood could be in the line of Judah. Where Jesus is also the Lion of the tribe of Judah.

Allow me to share with you the Jewish interpretation:
*Isaiah 53 Does not speak of the Messiah*
*The servant is Israel*
Chapter 53 is the fourth of four servant songs in the book of Isaiah
It deals with the remnant of Israel not all Israel, the ones who will stay faithful to GOD.
*See Zephaniah 3: 12-13*
But I will leave within you the meek and humble. The *remnant of Israel will trust in the name of the Lord.* 13 They will do no wrong; they will tell no lies. A deceitful tongue will not be found in their mouths. They will eat and lie down and no one will make them afraid.”
*In all the servant songs in Isaiah the servant is Israel! not the messiah and certainly not JC.*
*Isaiah 41:8-9*
“But you, *Israel, my servant, Jacob* , whom I have chosen, you *descendants of Abraham* my friend, 9 I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. I said, *‘You are my servant’* ;
*Isaiah 43:10-11*
*You are my witnesses, (plural)* declares the Lord, “and my *servant (singular)* whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me. 11 I, even I, am the Lord, and *apart from me there is no savior.*
*Isaiah 44:1-2*
But now listen, *Jacob, my servant, Israel, whom I have chosen.* 2 This is what the Lord says- he who made you, who formed you in the womb, and who will help you: Do not be afraid, *Jacob, my servant,* Jeshurun,[a] whom I have chosen.
*Isaiah 44:2*
“Remember these things, *Jacob, for you, Israel, are my servant.* I have made you, *you are my servant; Israel* , I will not forget you.
*Isaiah 45:4*
For the sake of *Jacob my servant, of Israel my chosen,* I summon you by name and bestow on you a title of honor, though you do not acknowledge me.
*Isaiah 48:20*
Leave Babylon, flee from the Babylonians! Announce this with shouts of joy and proclaim it. Send it out to the ends of the earth; say, “The Lord has redeemed *his servant Jacob.”*
*Isaiah 49:3*
He said to me, *“You are my servant, Israel,* in whom I will display my splendor.”
*Isaiah 53 - Explanation*
The speakers in this chapter are the nations. How do we know this? Look at the previous chapter, keep in mind that the chapters were not divided in the past, chapter 53 is a continuation of chapter 52!
Chapter 52
15 so he will sprinkle(AY) many nations, [d] and kings(AZ) will shut their mouths(BA) because of him.
For what they were not told, they will see, and what they have not heard, they will understand.(BB)
*The nations will be astonished, and this is what leads to chapter 53:*
1Who would have believed our report, and to whom was the arm of the Lord revealed?...
*Isaiah 53 further explanation:*
All the *HE* in this chapter actually refers to the servant (the remnant few).
*The arm of the lord was revealed to Israel as he took them out of Egypt.
*The people of Israel have grown in number.
*He had brought Israel out of Egypt which is a desert land.
*The people of Israel have been hated by many nations.
*The people of Israel have suffered disease many a time as recorded in the OT.
*The people of Israel went to exiles twice.
*The people of Israel lost many for the crimes of other nations (the holocaust).
*Isaiah 53 proof*
I'll demonstrate how Christianity changed the true meaning of Isaiah 53 with false translations:
*Verse 5:*
The Christian translation:
But he was *pierced* for our transgressions, he was crushed *for* our iniquities; the *punishment that brought us peace* was on him, and *by his wounds* we are healed.
*The correct translation - Chabad:*
But he was *pained* *because* (not for!) of our transgressions, crushed *because* of our iniquities; the *chastisement of our welfare* was upon him, and *with his wound* we were healed.
_______________________________________________
*Verse 8:*
מִפֶּשַׁע עַמִּי נֶגַע , *לָמו*
The Christian translation:
*for* the transgression of my people *he was stricken* . [2]
*The correct translation - Chabad:*
*because* of the transgression of my people, *a plague befell them (!!!)*
*Now see other places in the OT the same word was translated correctly, not as in Isaiah 53 !*

@@PazPinhasRahamim9220 Thank you Paz! My point/suggestion is NOT that ISAIAH 53 is meant by the author of Isaiah to be Jesus or the Messiah. Hi Craig.
He's talking about real history, not what the later followers of Jesus wrote.
Right on brother Jesus is our King!!
Shalom.
John prepared the way for the Holy Spirit per Isaiah 40:3. Not another messiah after him.

As Paul says: “Christ by purchase released us (the Jews) from the curse of the Law by becoming a curse instead of us, because it is written: ‘Accursed is every man hanged upon a stake.’” (Ga 3:13)
By removing this obstacle, namely, the curse brought on the Jews by their breaking of the Law, Jesus Christ removed this barrier to life for the Jews, giving them opportunity for life. His ransom could thus benefit them as well as others.
Matthew 20:28 Just as the Son of man came, not to be ministered to, but to minister and to give his life as a RANSOM in exchange for many.”

Unlike John the baptist, who was only a created man, Jesus was the Creator in the flesh. As per prophesy, John was simply there to prepare the way for Jesus.
