Kill Spider with Diatomaceous Earth

  • I noticed that I had some ants and spiders in my tiny house build. I knew that I did not want to kill them with commercial poisons but I did not want them in the tiny house either. Then I stumbled upon Diatomaceous Earth. The dirt like powder is very fine silica dust and it cuts up the body of insects so that they dehydrate.
    In this video I take some of this dirt and place it on a spider to see how well it works. I hope you enjoy.

    No good for house spiders then? I was looking into getting peppermint oil, I found 2 very large spiders in my bedroom and I just can't sleep knowing they can crawl on my bed at night. People keep telling me "they won't hurt you, they are harmless" I tell them I realise that but it doesn't stop my mind going on overdrive with fear.

      Spiders do have exoskeleton. Diatomaceous earth can take days to work though so It is not an instant killer of anything that is reasonably sized.

      Dehydration is what I was going for. Starvation can take weeks with a spider that size. The glass shards in the DE cut up the exoskeleton and cause rapid dehydration.

      Yes they can last that long without getting anymore water or food. But what if it was slowly draining from their body. Drastically reducing that time and draining their internal reserves that would let them live for so long @@TheVixxen

    I have a spot where my subflooring ends in my furnace room and there are always a couple black web spiders. A few months ago I went a little crazy with the earth and heavily dusted the entire line. Much of it sitting on the webs. Went down today to turn up the April air and stepped right over it. I looked to see if just had my foot where a spider might have been. No joke there was one every 10 inches sticking out of the subflooring in a web. Still covered in DE.

  • @truebeliever6440
    @truebeliever6440 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I'm simply not sure if it works on spiders or not, but DE isn't something that works in minutes or hours. I looked into it's use against grain weevils, which is a very common problem for grains, and usually pesticides are used. There are various scientific studies that demonstrate it's effectiveness, but it takes weeks. For example, DE was shown to control the infestations of grain weevilswithin 21 days in one study: citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.594.3470&rep=rep1&type=pdf
    DE is not some pesticide that merely kills upon application. I think it slowly lacerates their exoskeleton, and makes the environment inhabitable for bugs to live and propagate. It is very effective, but takes some time. It's supposed to be VERY good for long-term control. If it gets wet somehow, it loses it's effectiveness completely, but when it dries, it's perfectly functional again. It will last indefinitely.
    At least that's the understanding I have, and my 2 cents.

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a good 2 cents. I have also heard about the lacerations. I hear it can work on ants too. This was just a short test that I wanted to try. Thank you for the input.

      @LandtoHouse  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Tamara Weber I used animal grade for this. Later I tried food grade and it's better. I guess smaller parts. I don't think it was from suffocation because I owned it several times a day and spiders can live a long time with little air.

  • @DonziGT230

    I put some on a couple brown widows this morning and they're still alive many hours later. They're not in a container, just in their webs on an old swamp cooler that's not in use. I used food grade freshwater DE that I think is from Australia because the research I did said it was the best for killing bugs. If it doesn't work I'll be bummed, I bought a bunch of it and have spread it all over the yard hoping to get rid of the black & brown widows as well as the other annoying spiders. I wouldn't mind the non-dangerous ones if the webs weren't such an unsightly mess, my GF on the other hand has a bit of spider phobia so I want them all gone.

      +Jeremiah Jaws I know several people who would never say "kill a spider for no reason" they are the ones standing on a chair screaming. Outside spiders are fine but when you put your foot into your house shoe and a spider is crawling about in there it's no good. I agree about the harmful chemicals too.
